President Trump: Why is his incoming administration desperate to destroy Europe with political and economic turmoil?

If it were China or Islamic State behaving in a way Trump and Musk are regarding Greenland, Canada, threats of regime change in the UK and essentially aggressively trying to destabilize every European ‘ally’, we’d be calling in Ambassadors, freezing assets etc.

They haven’t even been sworn in yet and are causing chaos and stress.

The way they are behaving you’d think they wanted armed conflict with all their allies.

Although I’m aware Trumps voters don’t care what we think of them, I don’t think many of the rest of the world will ever forgive them for what they’ve inflicted on the rest of us. Yes give into stupidity and feel good chanting four word slogans, but contain it within your own borders, don’t harm the rest of the world with it.

Extremists tend to do extreme things.

localnotail · 11/01/2025 17:41

In my view, extreme left has a lot in common with the extreme right. Different ideology, same methods.

None of those atrocities were committed on the side of the left. To be left is to abhor violence, to want to solve disputes through diplomacy and mediation. Murder and violence is the wheelhouse of the right I think you’ll find, and not even the far right either. Centre right adherents can be just as bloodthirsty.

To be fair, this is not true. Soviet revolutionaries were as bloodthirsty as they come, for starters. And they were VERY left.

Like those gentle folk The Communist Party of Nepal, hell bent on destroying the monarchy, parliament and even bombed schools and colleges in this century?

They absolutely were. That’s The Left, warts and all, inconvenient I know.

True. No point in pretending otherwise

I think that might change at the next election

Fear that you’re correct, though I guess veering to extremes one way or another may be necessary in eventually finding a sensible balance🤷‍♀️

I think a lot of the noise online is manufactured by Russia, but even if it is, the left will mobilise and we will defeat the rise of fascism. We always do.

This is what you said. When specifically? You said “always” so there must be multiple examples.

How? Like during the Spanish Civil War? “The Red Terror”? Or Pol Pot & his Year Zero? Or the multi millions Stalin killed during his tenure? Yeah, let’s hear it for The Left… 🙄

You're just an attention seeker, aren't you?

I've not been my better self today. I'm not trying to seek attention, I'm just frustrated by what I see as unnecessary polarisation. But the best thing to do would be log off and touch grass.

Gone12 · 11/01/2025 16:08

Have a think, are you in the UK? It would be better you did your own research.

Rubbish. The left have only ever been part of the movements that have defeated fascism. It has taken the concerted efforts of people from all walks of life to defeat fascism and that will remain the case. You don't honestly put the families of Roosevelt and Churchill on left do you?

B0xes · 11/01/2025 15:47

Well, I don't support or defend any such views. As I said upthread, nothing is reputable. Everything has to be judged carefully in its context and sometimes something of value can be found when all else must be discarded and guarded against.

Greenland is not in the EU.

True, but Greenlanders are EU citizens.

Well exactly. She does an interview with Unherd where she discusses this. It's worth watching.

To quote you “No thanks”.

Thank you.

For what it's worth I've not read that blog she wrote for. And there was context missing from the wiki entry, but whatever. I obviously don't support anyone that genuinely holds that or any other racist views.

Just because we have a slightly left wing government right now doesn't mean that we are bucking the trend. Reading and listening to opinions on here and elsewhere indicates that once this term is over, if Farage is still in charge of Reform, the UK will swing heavily to the right, particularly England. It's quite a scary medium and long term outlook from where I am sitting.

That was quite a rabbit hole that excavated this:

At trial, it emerged that Power had been writing anonymously for a far-right blog, Parallax Optics,[10] and had shared far-right conspiracy theories with Miller including the idea that black people and white people are different alien races.

Tells me all I need to know.

Thank you.

The author is a good friend of a philosopher called Nina Power. She in turn was close to Mark Fisher, who is very much venerated on the left.

It's in Amercas national interest to destabilise Europe and the EU and install government's who are in thrall and indebted to Trump. Then US food companies, farmers, tech companies and pharma can dump their excess stuff on us in particular. EU rules prevent them capitulation to the US on food safety etc so Trump hates them. He is acting solely in Americas interests and we are bending over and taking it up thexarse, pretending we are big enough in our own right to he equal partners with the US.

I don't agree with any of that except the last sentence.

European governments come and go rapidly, it's more important to have the established "long term ally" narrative. They will still work together regardless of who is specifically in power at any given moment.

Exporting to Europe isn't a high priority for them. The top five countries they export goods to are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, and the UK, with the first three being massively more significant. None of those are under EU rule, and the EU market is never going to be that big for them when the EU prioritises the EU.
