To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

Bollocks.

"In New South Wales the legislation says the bushfire danger period is October 1st to March 31st, we regularly now get fires from August."
The Bureau of Meteorology's latest State of the Climate report found there had been an increase in extreme fire weather, and the length of the fire season, across the country since the 1950s.
It found that had led to larger and more frequent fires, particularly in the country's south.
And it's not only the season being stretched that is presenting a problem, but the more frequent extreme fire behaviour that comes with it.
"You get pyro convective storms, that means the smoke plume from the fire pushes up into the stratosphere and forms storm clouds," Mr Mullins said.

It’s funny, I’m sick of hearing about Gaza day after day. I have no sympathy for terrorists or their supporters.

Im getting a little tired of band wagoners bleating about Gaza after every fire, earthquake and hurricane.

The Australian fires were caused by colonial settlers not respecting or understanding the land and listening to what the native population have been warning them about.. it’s not all due to climate change.

'We burn all year now': What Australia can learn from California fires

The deadly winter fires in California are another warning for Australians to reassess climate risks, where we live and how we deal with emergencies in the future, disaster experts say.

Yes, I agree. I prefer my news to be much more locally focussed.
I like to see 80% GOOD and bad local news.
World catastrophes - like Gazza, famines, wild fires, floods, plane crashes etc. - I like to be about 20% of news content.

People can then look up more details about an occurance themselves and, in effect, tailor their further news to suit.

If I were in the US then I would expect to hear more about the fires. If I were in Israel, I would expect to hear more about Gazza. If I lived in Los Angeles, I would expect to hear only bulletins about the fires and how to help, escape and assess my movements for coming days.

The constant horrific visual images of the fires is making my safe life seem alarming.

Edited

Local news exists.
Where do you expect to ‘look things up’ about events that you deem important? Could it be national and international news?
Sorry that other people’s suffering is encroaching on your nice life, perhaps get back on social media?

There will be a black rectangle in your home with buttons on it. Find that and press up or down, it should change the channel for you if there are batteries in it.

Too much bad foreign (or local) news is unnesessary on the regular TV news. It frightens the children. It unsettles the household and it is not relevant to people who are not there and who can not help. (kids, old folk, dogs and people who have no money to give.)
Most adults have options of looking up on their phones for further details of horrific footage.

Edited

children shouldn’t be watching the news.

Stop with the brainless ‘the media are evil’ claptrap. Would you rather have ‘everyone makes and decides on the news themselves’? How is that going for you? Facebook? X? Bias is NOT to do with how much time the show spends on ‘each side’, those are editorial decisions. No, it’s not possible to report on every lost cat etc. Editors have to decide what’s newsworthy, I believe they do their best. Bias is to do with whether there is an underlying agenda, see GB News, it’s completely different to what you are describing.

”Editors” decide do they? Get a grip. All human life is “news worthy”.

SnowFrogJelly · 11/01/2025 01:00

BabyShock879 · 10/01/2025 22:23

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down. OK, really sad. Some of the scenes are apocalyptic. Yes, it is newsworthy. But does it have to be on ALL the fucking time? Surely other stuff is going on they could report on.

Oh no it's so boring watching people have their houses destroyed by fire

🙄

smooththecat · 11/01/2025 00:59

MumWifeOther · 11/01/2025 00:52

Media bias is very much a thing. Mainstream news never reports on anything transparently, honestly or equally. There are multiple tragedies occurring and no one innocent deserves to suffer at the hands of evil due to greed. Sadly, until we view everyone as equal nothing will change. The media intends for it to be this way. YANBU but are you really surprised?

Wonder how you'd feel if you're house burned to the ground with all your possessions in it maybe you'd like it to be headline news

oakleaffy · 11/01/2025 00:41

There were massive wildfires in Australia a few years ago, and people definitely cared.
Koalas burned, wildlife and farm animals- Horses, the advice was to leave them without head collars and to let them protect themselves as best they could- It was shocking.

The American fires- looks like the buildings aren’t built of brick and stone - but look to be flimsy timber and board (?).

HellsBells67 · 11/01/2025 00:55

Are the news programmes covering the fact people have been arrested for deliberately starting fires in Los Angeles?

ChewbaccasMrs · 11/01/2025 00:55

OP I can't believe you've started this thread, talk about being oblivious you do realise that some of the women that post on mumsnet are from the very places that are burning and that others will have family and friends living there.

Giving a shit about what's happening in America doesnt mean people don't care about what's happening in Gaza or about the many other horrific things going on around the world, people can be worried and upset about more than one thing at a time you know.!

DiscoBeat · 11/01/2025 00:51

If you want to turn away from it stop watching the news. And especially refrain from starting a thread about it. It's big news for very obvious reasons, ffs.

EconomyClassRockstar · 11/01/2025 00:50

The vast majority of people who lost their home aren't celebrities and aren't super rich. Entire very normal neighborhoods have been decimated.

That can be reported on without Gaza or North Carolina or whatever other place that is having a shit time being brought up because empathy doesn't actually have a limit.

LocalHer0e · 11/01/2025 00:49

This is a disgraceful thread

MissDollyMix · 11/01/2025 00:47

This is actually one of the worst threads I have ever read on mumsnet and I have been around here a long time…. I can’t work out if this is a reflection of the average mumsnet user, or a damning indictment of modern society. Either way it’s horrible.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 11/01/2025 00:46

What an absolutely shitty premise for a thread OP. So sorry a massive humanitarian catastrophe along with the loss of priceless history and architecture is boring for you.

FluffyPineapples · 11/01/2025 00:45

I've been fairly glued to the coverage of the LA fires the last few days. I have no great love for LA or the countless eye-wateringly rich celebs who inhabit it, but the scenes of devastation are unbelievably apocalyptical. I suppose partly it comes down to the morbid curiosity of it - it just looks like something from a disaster film, it's scarcely believable.

Conversely, as harsh as it sounds, I have little interest in Gaza. Just as you say about the LA fires, there's nothing we can do about a foreign conflict thousands of miles away in a region that has been a geopolitical mess since time immemorial. And to be frank, I'm beyond sick of people forever bickering about it online.

But, I suppose it just comes down to choice, which news you wish to follow and which you do not. If you're fed-up of hearing about it, it's easy enough to switch the TV off or put the phone down. You're not duty bound to follow something that doesn't interest you.

FancyAnotherCuppa · 11/01/2025 00:45

I care immensely about Gaza. But I also care about what’s going on in California - I have family there, who aren’t living in million dollar homes and are about to lose everything.

Remind yourself that it is possible to care about more than one thing.

Bubblesoffun · 11/01/2025 00:45

Sad how the absolute worst of humanity is coming out here. From the usually fairly tolerant MN.
Lucky there are still people in the world who are capable of caring about their fellow human from what ever country they come from.
