To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

Well said! Reading this, and other threads on the subject, show just how ignorant and ill informed many of the general public are, especially about other countries.

its like people say this part of the news is too much but on the news websites themselves are many articles so its like whats the issue ? news is news

It's a distraction pushed by the media to divert from the imminent financial collapse caused by the current government.

"financial collapse" thats always been a risk, besides on the websites there are many news stories ?

You think LA is all white people?

What a breathtakingly ludicrous, ignorant, and ill informed comment.

Educate yourself! Only around 37% of L.A. is white!

Why let facts get in the way of a bit of race baiting though eh?! Hmm

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down. OK, really sad. Some of the scenes are apocalyptic. Yes, it is newsworthy. But does it have to be on ALL the fucking time? Surely other stuff is going on they could report on.

It's a distraction pushed by the media to divert from the imminent financial collapse caused by the current government.

Appalonia · 10/01/2025 23:51

Wow what a nasty, unsympathetic person you are. What if it was YOUR house that was burning down? Wouldn't you be devastated...?

The fires in California show that no-one however affluent can be protected from the effects of climate change.
if we don’t do something NOW deaths and suffering caused by climate change will dwarf the impacts of any wars.

Yes, this is exactly why it's big news.

Plenty of us fortunate to have been blessed with with more than one brain cell care very much.

I find it really disturbing that some people have become so divisive that they lose any critical thinking ability & everything is just so binary.

Have you actually read my previous post as compared to YourCrispyBalonz
who 'doesn't give a F about a few fires in la la land' ??

WTF have I just read........? Confused

Snorlaxo · 10/01/2025 23:45

I don’t watch the BBC so can’t comment on their coverage specifically but they fire is massive news and I’m expecting it to be even after the inauguration. Things in the UK are wet and cold so seeing a fire somewhere warm and dry is a little surreal but this is climate change in action. If politicians have been skimping on measures that would save lives then shame on them. (I’m not sure of the details but lots of accusations of this on SM)

I hope that the emergency services are able to remain safe and save as many pets and humans as possible. There will be ordinary people deeply affected by this disaster and I hope that they will get help - both financial and practical. It is scary that insurers stopped insuring property in that area only a few months ago.

There’s plenty of Brits in the US as well as people who have ties to the place through work and family. I think that they will want coverage. I want less of the which famous person had to flee their home and more of what is happening to the ordinary people and firefighters. Do they have infrastructure like they do in states where Tornadoes are common? Is Biden sending resources ?

We should have left “what about Gaza? “ in 2024. What is happening there is horrific but there’s horrific stuff happening elsewhere too and highlighting those issues doesn’t take away from the atrocities of Gaza. Weren’t those people saying “What about Ukraine? “ Using Gaza to score points is shallow behaviour.

The worst fires in history in a country that is our closest ally is
pretty important news to most right-thinking people. Makes more sense than fretting about Gaza - a place that we share no cultural ties with. If anything our values are antithetical.

You think that the people of Gaza don’t have the same values as people in the UK? What values are you talking about, exactly?

Atrocities are happening across the world. Considering the atrocities happening elsewhere, Gaza has received a lot of coverage - why Gaza has more attention than, for example, Sudan, is probably a contentious point. Do you have any thoughts to share about the Maghreb? Or the Uighurs?

But if atrocities are taking place somewhere, does that mean nothing else can be discussed?

LongDarkTeatime · 10/01/2025 23:43

To be fair to the OP the images of devastation in California also reminded me of the images of Gaza.
Hopefully there will be far far fewer deaths, injuries and trauma in California.

The people of California didn’t vote in a terrorist organisation to govern them nor did they murder their neighbours.

Coldanddamp · 10/01/2025 23:39

Regardless of the cause, please try and have a little empathy for all who are suffering in the world right now, not just the ones you deem worthy.

Well said

You're not unreasonable, I think the UK and to be fair many other countries consume an unhealthy amount of news about the US.

Coldanddamp · 10/01/2025 23:35

@Mustard3 maybe look at other sources

Thoughtsonallsorts · 10/01/2025 23:31

It's an apocalyptic tragedy. In this day & age you would think they would have more robust measures in place to deal with & prevent forest fires, especially in an area with such dense woodland.

Bunny44 · 10/01/2025 23:30

If London or Manchester or any major city was burning down, would you expect it not to be on the international news? This is a huge and devastating fire in a city with global significance. If you're bored of it I doubt you've understood the scale of it. It's like the whole of central London or Paris burning. Yes some people have a lot of money there but there's a big wealth divide in LA with many ordinary people having lost everything. I already know of 2 people in my network who have lost homes and they're not celebrities.

Mustard3 · 10/01/2025 23:30

I have changed my answer, because now I do care after reading PPs post about evacuating her house.

I think the problem is the media reporting. Front page of Daily Mail is all about the Kardashians evacuating Calabasas (and who gives a fig).

I care way more about the impact on normal people, but hadn’t really seen any headlines about that.

colouringindoors · 10/01/2025 23:29

YABU.

Today it was also announced that 2024 was the hottest year on record and the first to be 1.5 degrees over pre-industrial levels.

I can only hope that this coverage and thia devastation in such an iconic city has a helpful impact on the world's leaders.

Our climate is getting more and more extreme as it warms.

Grammarnut · 10/01/2025 23:29

Disaster is always popular. War rather less so.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 10/01/2025 23:29

My exes place burnt to the ground. He's not rich. It's fuckong awful what's happening there.

I'm curious if this happened in London how this would go over on Mumsnet.

Most people won't be able to afford to rebuild their homes.

Many had their insurance policies cancelled a few months ago.

It's a terrifying shit show and the lack of empathy on here is pathological.

La has an enormous homeless population.

Elderly people have lost everything.

God, people can be such assholes.

I don't care how rich someone is, suffering is suffering and my heart goes out to everyone affected.
