Where does all the stuff go??

I lost my car/house keys at the weekend. They are on the same bunch, I drove home, let myself in the house. Went to lock up that evening and couldn't find them anywhere. I still haven't found them and I have turned this house upside down. Along with the obvious places, like under the sofa, down the back of the coffee table etc, Ive also emptied the bin, searched though the washing, looked in the freezer, searched the garage, if it can move, ive moved it. If theres a gap, ive searched it - nothing!

ive lost stuff in the past that ive never found, even when moving, they've never turned up.

Where are my keys? And were does all the stuff go?

Socks, not necessarily mens size 11/12, hair bands, ribbons, tights, knickers, anytning small, light, delicate, into mesh bags, not necessarily all together,
bras in bra bags, nothing torn, holed, ruined, no escape.

4theanimals · 14/01/2025 21:38

And check all your pockets: coat, trousers. Cardi?

4theanimals · 14/01/2025 21:35

What do you usually do when you get in? Try going in the places you usually do when entering your house. Did you do anything different? Go straight to a room you don’t usually? The bathroom? Did they fall into the bottom of your shopping bag?

Just remembered we lost 2 of those bun tins you make fairy cakes or Yorkshire puddings in, of course we only realised we had when we went to use them. Cue a dash to Wilko (RIP) to replace them.

The keys are in the dip below the windscreen where the wipers sit. Check there. It's a surprisingly comfortable spot for lost keys.

ElizaCBennett · 14/01/2025 00:56

I once lost my car keys and had to run to school to pick up my son. I looked everywhere I could think of but couldn’t find them until a couple of days later when I lifted up my oven worktop to use my hob and there they were!

BiancasSilverCoat · 14/01/2025 00:09

You all need my ex boyfriend. He could find anything. He would walk into a room and know where the thing was that I was looking for even if it was under a cushion or behind something on a shelf. It was the most uncanny gift.

(Well either that or he went around hiding stuff.)

I've got a theory that aliens visit us via other dimensions and they like to collect our stuff out of curiosity. They join special trips like we go on cruises. They especially like socks because of the patterns or perhaps they find them useful for something back in their world. Sometimes they leave stuff in odd places for us to find as a sort of joke. They're not able to take large things like vacuum cleaners or cars as they know we'd get frightened and freak out, although someone on MN did once have an ironing board go missing. I don't think we can see them as they're existing in another dimension.

Hoardasauruskaren · 13/01/2025 23:31

Did you find them Op?

When my DC were small I lost my house/car keys in the house for 3 days ! Had to walk everywhere. Got to the stage we were going to have to pay a fortune for a new car key the week before Christmas.
My DS1 who was 5 at the time had had a friend over the day the keys went missing so i asked his mum on the off chance. He said they were at the Christmas tree. I looked all round, no sign. DH picked the tree up & shook it & out fell the keys! One of the DC had hung them on the tree like a bauble!

manysausages · 13/01/2025 23:09

A third vote for behind radiator here. I lost my watch for 2 years because it had fallen off a windowsill, behind the radiator but got stuck on a sock also behind there, and was only dislodged when a third thing fell behind there.

Of course, I’d finally replaced it by then.

MorrisZapp · 13/01/2025 22:44

I was given a truly hideous pair of gloves once by an elderly relative for christmas. I thought, I'll lose them anyway so I'll just wear them.

Those fuckers literally wore out and I had to put them, tattered, in the bin. By which time they'd earned my grudging affection.

Ive done all this. Ive checked the coats, pockets, hoods, sleeves. Checked all shoes....just in case

I usually come straight in, straight into the kitchen before ive even took my coat off, because the dogs run straight to the back door. Keys go in my handbag, handbag goes down the side if the sofa, that's my routine.

Have you tried drawers? Cutlery, bedroom, whatever. Keys can slip them into them if you leave them on the side.
Also torn linings in bags and jackets. Have you given everything a good shake upside down?

Potatoewithawonkyeye · 13/01/2025 22:37

@bleepingbleepybleep ah it is definitely a glitch in the matrix 😅 had a very unique pair of earrings bought for me for valentines day. I took them out that evening and put them on my side table next to the bed. Woke the next morning to find 1 missing. When I say I emptied my bedroom...I EMPTIED it. Dismantled bed, went around with a sock on a hoover. It was nowhere to be found. Que 2 years later I've pulled an old holdall from the attic and there it was in an unused gym bag from times gone by...when I wasn't as lazy and a lot thinner😅 have no clue how it could of got there?? If anyone has any theories I'd like to hear them!

There was a brilliant thread on reddit where a gentleman cooked an egg a day for breakfast. He picked up his 6 pack out of the fridge, cracked it, fried it, ate it.
When he went to put the pack back in the fridge there was still 6 eggs left.....claimed he did not gain superpowers after recooking and eating mysterious 'quantum egg'😄

The elation I feel when all socks come out of the washing machine and pair up nicely is really quite sad.

Never experienced this Sad

I read a novel many years ago about where the lost things go. Think it was by Cecilia Aherne but I’ll have to look it up.

I get this a lot, especially now my toddler has taken to posting anything he can get his hands on into any small space my hands won’t fit into.

Was just coming on to say the same thing, the book is ‘a place called here’ and whilst complete fiction, it makes me feel far less irked when I loose things (which happens with alarming regularity).

Well worth a read!

Youtookmyhandle · 13/01/2025 20:44

Since we're all made from atoms, maybe, they reached an identical state as the floor and just merged. One day, someone will find them and wonder how the hell they got there.😂

Justploddingonandon · 13/01/2025 20:38

I once dropped a ring and it rolled in the gap under the skirting board that I hadn't realised was big enough! Was a right pain to get out and don't think I'd have spotted it if I hadn't seen it go in.

Elsvieta · 12/01/2025 19:30

Have you checked the pockets of what you were wearing? Completely emptied your bag?

Retrace your steps. Think through every little thing you did. If you cooked and opened a cupboard to get a pan, check the cupboard.

You don't have a dog, do you? They've swallowed weirder things.

There have been cases where people leave keys in a hall within sight of the letterbox and crooks out some sort of hook arrangement through to steal them and come back when the place is empty ... is that possible?

Next step - do you know anyone with a metal detector?

bleepingbleepybleep · 12/01/2025 15:41

Right. I've officially given up!

I've spent the day moving out furniture, took apart the sofa, emptied the laundry basket, gone through every drawer and cupboard in the house, stripped the beds, looked in every pocket and bag, nothing!

I don't know where else to look.

On a plus side...the house is sparking 😆

There's definitely house elves in the walls. Husband has just told me he's cleaned behind every radiator very recently and keys and my card been gone for months ?!

Had this happen so many times over the years , I put a friends Christmas present in a cupboard with other gifts , when I went to get it it was gone … apologised and told friend there was part of her gift missing .. went away for Christmas and when I came back they were in my bed ! Yes I was living alone at the time

There was a news report earlier this week about a bloke in Australia who was gutting his childhood home.
Ripping out a cupboard or something he found a wrapped Christmas present with his name on in his Mum's handwriting.
When he opened it, it was a set of Hot Wheels or similar, he guessed it had been there at least 45 years!

Can you imagine what his Mum went through, knowing she had bought and wrapped it then for it to disappear?

I saw the news report on that. It was 4 jet planes. He even waited for her mum to wake up and showed it to them 🤣
