Where does all the stuff go??

I lost my car/house keys at the weekend. They are on the same bunch, I drove home, let myself in the house. Went to lock up that evening and couldn't find them anywhere. I still haven't found them and I have turned this house upside down. Along with the obvious places, like under the sofa, down the back of the coffee table etc, Ive also emptied the bin, searched though the washing, looked in the freezer, searched the garage, if it can move, ive moved it. If theres a gap, ive searched it - nothing!

ive lost stuff in the past that ive never found, even when moving, they've never turned up.

Where are my keys? And were does all the stuff go?

Try behind radiators. Thats where I found mine years later!

They were in my passport 😁

jellymaker · 11/02/2025 23:46

They turn into tupperware lids!

ChangingHistory · 11/02/2025 23:23

Keys are usually in the outside of the door or in my coat pocket. Apparently most people only have enough bandwidth to open the door and get themselves inside and put keys away. If you add to that a crying child or the postie a costing you or spotting an interesting letter on the doormat you are screwed.

DH and I spent several minutes searching for the teapot which lives either next to the kettle or in the tea cupboard. We have one straight pretty clear run of kitchen surface so it wasn't there nor in the tea cupboard. I left the room for a minute and returned to find him searching the plates cupboard with the teapot next to the kettle. Asked what he was looking for, still the teapot. There is no way we could both have missed it next to the kettle.

I’ve lost both of my credit cards somewhere in the house, and I need one to put the deposit on a hire car next week (the only thing I ever use them for). I haven’t used either of them since the last time I went away in October.

I have searched everywhere I can think of!!

Found a bank card behind a radiator once, years after I lost it. Look there for
lost things!

waltzingparrot · 11/02/2025 23:07

Usually coat pocket in my case.

Devianinc · 11/02/2025 23:05

Look in the refrigerator and your utensil drawers.

Abracadabra12345 · 11/02/2025 22:30

That's just bizarre 😱

Reading this thread gives me hope, that it's not just me going gaga

I gave my son a tag for his keys with a small buzzer thing control kept by the phone. If he knows the keys are in the house, he can press the control button and the tag on the key makes a really loud noise

My mum used to wear an eternity ring of my Nan's ( her Mum). My mum got cancer and the ring became too big and she lost it. Looked everywhere for it - Mum lives alone in a one bedroom flat - and it never turned up.
About 18 months later, I took Mum out shopping and when we got back to her flat, there was the ring, sitting in the middle of a cushion on the settee. We both just stood staring at it!
No explanation.....

LyricalGangsta · 06/02/2025 17:48

This is bizarre!!

Crucible · 05/02/2025 08:29

Reckon it's been in a cushion cover somehow, hiding, and it's popped back out.

I found them!!!

Behind a cushion on the sofa. I checked and cleared the cushions more than once.

Even hoovered the whole sofa about a week before finding them.

That would be the house pixies having a bit of fun.

myplace · 04/02/2025 20:57

Wow! Three weeks!

OP, my ex- DH once lost my mother’s car keys. At the time, we lived a three hour drive from her house - my sister had to drive my father home to get the spare ones, after we had torn the house apart to find them. (My DPs didn’t like my ex - this didn’t exactly endear him to them!) My ex was adamant that he had brought them in and put them down in the kitchen. They turned up under the back of the fridge when we moved house - I had been under the fridge with a wooden spoon to see if they were there at the time. I can only assume they had fallen off the fridge when someone opened the door, and had then been accidentally kicked under the fridge without being noticed.

Nan left me her engagement ring. One day couldn’t find it in my flat. Tore the place apart, nothing. Eventually conceded that I must’ve taken it off in the living room, put on top of newspaper then scooped up papers for recycling.

Went to a second hand jewellers, told man the story and asked if he had anything similar. As luck would have it, he did. Bought new ring from him; I could ill afford it at the time but my DPs would’ve been so upset with me for losing it. Man said he didn’t do refunds but I could come back and change it if I found my original one.

Get home, open bedside drawer (which I’d searched several times) and ring is sat there staring at me!

Once moved house. Packed jewellery in box, then in another box. Went to get pair of earrings and only one there. Decide it must have been lost in the move, even though everything else was in exactly the same place and nothing else missing. Got up a few days later and it was sat on top of my makeup bag!

One thing I never found was a bracelet. Got in bed and realised I still had it on. Took it off and put it on my bedside table. Never saw it again. I checked the table, drawers, floor, bedding….it just vanished! No one else who could’ve moved it, no animals etc. strange.

Edited

But things HAVE to go somewhere, that just have too. They can't just disappear when no one is looking

I once was really organised and bought next year's Christmas cards in the January sale.

A house move, and 15 years later they never have reappeared.

I can only think that dh did an unusual tidy and thought they were old cards and recycled it, although he denied it.

I've got a theory that aliens visit us via other dimensions and they like to collect our stuff out of curiosity. They join special trips like we go on cruises. They especially like socks because of the patterns or perhaps they find them useful for something back in their world. Sometimes they leave stuff in odd places for us to find as a sort of joke. They're not able to take large things like vacuum cleaners or cars as they know we'd get frightened and freak out, although someone on MN did once have an ironing board go missing. I don't think we can see them as they're existing in another dimension.

So who took our trombone?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 14/01/2025 22:35

Don't lose hope OP.

I share now the story of the remote control. This a long and tedious quest that ended happily, but is still a mystery.

Traditionally on Halloween I visit my DPs grave with fellow Goths to toast him. With alcohol, not like a marshmallow. I wear his totem necklace so last year I retrieved it from his precious accessory case, and was surprised to find the big remote control that I'd obviously put in there for safe keeping while packing up my bedroom to move house, which was chaotic in the extreme, and because of that, I'd forgotten it was in there and had to order a replacement. Hadn't looked in the case since June.

I chuckled and thought that's handy, if I lose the new one or it breaks, I know where there's a spare.

About three days later, I wake up having fallen asleep watching TV with new remote and other Internet gizmo thing on the bed, except the little white gizmo was there, but replacement remote was not.

I looked down both sides of the bed, there's no gap underneath, I have a sofa jammed up against the foot so it can't go there. I move the chair by the bed, shake out all bedding, go through a pile of clothes and go through the entire flat. Bleddy thing was nowhere to be found.

Two separate friends came round at different times, and were of course convinced I was just having a senior moment so we repeated the whole process together, to no avail.

Of course, I retrieved original remote from the case if precious things, shrugged and moved on with my life.

About four weeks later, I pick up a pile of dirty laundry from beside my bed - while I have a tendency to slatterny behaviour, I had done several loads of washing that accumulates in the same spot, and it had been hoovered more than once. Nestled in my smalls was the new remote. I will swear on late DPs grave that it had vanished into an onter dimensional portal for those four weeks. I now have three remotes on my bed, and keep a stern eye on them.

Amusingly, as I was typing "inter-dimensional portal" Ross Coulthard said exactly those words in the context of UAPs on YouTube. I am taking this as proof. Of what, I'm not sure. But I have hope for your keys OP !!

What do you usually do when you get in? Try going in the places you usually do when entering your house. Did you do anything different? Go straight to a room you don’t usually? The bathroom? Did they fall into the bottom of your shopping bag?

I usually come straight in and straight to the back door to let the dogs out,

I put my keys in my handbag as I walk through the lounge to the kitchen, and put my bag on the kitchen sideboard. If id dropped them in the way I'd hear them, and see them when I went back in.

Then get my keys out later as I lock up to go to bed.

I don't have a hallway as such, just a small space about 2 meters square between the stairs and the front door, there's just enough room to open the door.

My house is tiny, with minimal furniture, there is no where I haven't looked, nothing I haven't moved.

It's possible, of course, that I might've ran up to the loo with the keys in my hand absentmindedly, but I've looked in there, I've emptied the laundry basket, even the random scarf that has been in the basket for ages, and the stray socks that don't match up...( We could start a sock swapping group 🤣)

I've looked in dressing gown pockets that have been hanging on the back of my door for months, looked in my makeup drawer, my crap drawers, checked the fridge, freezer microwave, behind the radiators, even though I don't think they'd fit as they are too big

I remember checking the bin on the day,

Honestly, I have looked EVERYWHERE.

I'm bamboozled!
