Is the Chancellor about to crash the economy?

I will start by saying I voted Labour, but I am increasingly concerned about what the government has done so far.

Today there are warning that food prices could shoot up, the pound is going down, there were big jitters on the bonds market and government borrowing is higher than planned.

More generally Reeves seems to have spooked businesses and they have no will to expand or employ more people.

I agreed that the Tories left a total mess.

But Labour seems to just go from bad to worse and I am really starting to wish she could be replaced by someone more competent to restore some confidence.

Trying to cancel discussion by calling people a Tory bot is how you turn voters to Reform etc

What a bizarre POV.

I'm left wing and someone calling me a Tory bot wouldn't make me vote for a party with the complete opposite values to me like Reform!

It doesn’t matter who’s at the helm, if the ship has a hole, it’s going to sink.

This isn’t a labour issue or a chancellor issue, this is a UK in austerity for decades issue plus horrific overspending.

Politics is crazy. A new leader or chancellor every 12 weeks isn’t going to help. Some recovery plans take decades, not weeks.

Recovery isn’t decreasing the private sector or stalling growth

Even Labour pledged to do the opposite so they know it’s bad

dottiehens · 11/01/2025 08:37

Labour crashes the economy every time they are in government. They never learnt and they do not care about anything but their ideology. Keir Starmer is much worse than I even thought possible.

"UK in austerity for decades issue plus horrific overspending."

Errrrr.

'Austerity' is used to describe the 'reduction' in public spending. How can you be simultaneously against austerity and overspending?

For the record, there never was any austerity. Spending went up every single year since Labour crashed the economy in 2008/2009.

I don’t vote for the Labour government, never have, and barely post on X, in fact I have a brand new account and my feed is full of adverts from Labour about bringing down the cost of of concert prices. HOW MUCH CASH is this gimmick costing us tax payers.

It’s almost like satire but these idiots run our government.

A bit like during brexit referendum where remain were wasting a lot of time and effort talking about how mobile phone roaming charges whilst abroad may increase if we left the eu. So much time and effort on trivialities! Or successive governments in annual budgets making a big thing of selling off the Tote - barely anyone knew what it was let alone cared.

Yes I very much believe you voted Labour and are not at all a Tory propaganda bot.'

Feel free to check my posting history. You will see my long standing support for Labour on this site and many threads I have posted on other topics in the past few years.

It is really infantile to try to shut down a conversation by saying some must be a 'Tory bot' if they express worries about the economy.

I too get sick of the tedious bot accusations. I am an NHS worker in my fifties. Always voted Labour. For the first time ever, I am starting to regret it. Not a bot.

Using the same metric as Labour used against Truss, Labour have already crashed it!

I'm surprised that people are surprised, I suppose not many on this site remember the '60s and the destruction they wrought then!

FoM for under 25s is what’s been discussed as the deal the EU would like in some press..

Oh I’m thinking about the old female prime minister

Be careful, she will send you a cease and desist letter as well

Am I thick, I thought Lizz trust was dead? Or maybe I’m thinking about someone else

Perhaps I might have to eat my words. Do we have a new 'nasty party'?

Privetproblemshedges · 10/01/2025 22:55

Dont fear everyone- over on his x/twitter page, Kier announced he is going to cut the cost of going to gigs and events. Golly aren’t we lucky.

How much bullshit can we take? And HOW much money will it cost us to enforce this trivial idea? Labour have truely lost touch with any semblance of the working class. They don’t relate to us and are acting like obnoxious idealistic cunts

ThisOldThang · 10/01/2025 22:53

The Conservatives are too wet. Labour don't even recognise or acknowledge the problem - in fact, they think more government non-jobs are always the answer. The Lib Dems and Greens are more of the same.

So that leaves Reform who are probably up for giving it a go, but are also a bunch of disorganised amateurs.

I fear things are going to have to get much, much worse before people are ready / crying out for a 'Maggie' to come in and fix things.

ThisOldThang · 10/01/2025 12:05

Somebody posted an interview with Truss yesterday.

It's an interesting watch and she argues that no government is currently capable of fixing the country because so much has been outsourced to unaccountable quangos and the civil service aren't accountable either.

That's why nothing changes when the government changes and she argues that we're a 'failed state' on that basis.

I watched the interview also.
Its very interesting regardless of how you feel about her time as PM.

Her description of how Government actually works mirrors what many have been saying for a while now that it really is not fit for purpose.

A reset is needed but it will take a strong set of MP’s to take on the establishment and begin to unpick the layers of bureaucracy and kick the unelected Quangos off the gravy train.

In short, currently it doesn't matter which party are elected as they don't hold the power.

It’s amazing how many people running the government down reckon they voted for it. They clearly didn’t do it with much conviction.

I voted Labour, but there's no point pretending this is going well. Raising NICs for employers made no sense. I could see the thinking behind getting rid of the WFA and changing inheritance rules for farmers, but that made literally no sense. I have no idea how it got approved as policy.

PickleBranst · 10/01/2025 22:34

Yanbu. I'd rather she put a penny on income tax too. The economy was starting to do better before she inherited it, public sector needed investment though, so a penny on income tax makes sense.

I'm not a farmer or private school parent, but meddling with small amount of tax that affect only a few seems pointless.

Reeves is out of her depth. Can we get someone with some experience??

But who?

That chart has pro Brexit on less than 50% in 2016, so it looks like a load of remainer bollocks to me.

You do realise a poll might also include the “don’t knows”…Unlike a binary and ultimately binding vote.

Admit it to yourself, most people now realise it was a huge, unbelievably costly mistake. It’s pretty much common knowledge now.

BIossomtoes · 10/01/2025 22:28

ThisOldThang · 10/01/2025 22:20

Why would that make it bollocks? There were people who didn’t vote in the referendum and people who didn’t make up their minds until the last minute. Clearly the demographic has changed in the intervening eight years - a lot of leavers have died and young people are now included who were too young to be in 2016. It’s pretty obvious that the number of Brexiteers will reduce every year.
