Is the Chancellor about to crash the economy?

I will start by saying I voted Labour, but I am increasingly concerned about what the government has done so far.

Today there are warning that food prices could shoot up, the pound is going down, there were big jitters on the bonds market and government borrowing is higher than planned.

More generally Reeves seems to have spooked businesses and they have no will to expand or employ more people.

I agreed that the Tories left a total mess.

But Labour seems to just go from bad to worse and I am really starting to wish she could be replaced by someone more competent to restore some confidence.

I doubt most people criticising the civil service know much about it.

Papyrophile · 10/01/2025 12:45

All governments hate small businesses and not many politicians understand that you have to make a profit after paying rent/rates/tax/utilities and your staff (if any) and suppliers to stay in business. What remains is the element you can pay out in dividends or reinvest in enlarging the business.

The last budget removed any incentive to take the risk of starting a business, and don't let me start on all the compliance burdens imposed on companies, which fall harder on small businesses than on larger ones.

I’d hate to agree with Liz Truss on anything but she might have a point there.

I agree - The civil service has lost sight of its purpose.

Somebody posted an interview with Truss yesterday.

It's an interesting watch and she argues that no government is currently capable of fixing the country because so much has been outsourced to unaccountable quangos and the civil service aren't accountable either.

That's why nothing changes when the government changes and she argues that we're a 'failed state' on that basis.

I had reservations about Liz Truss and couldn't believe that she got the Tory leadership and became PM, it made me despair and I usually support the Tories, although I'm no fan of Kemi Badenoch or Robert Jenrick, but didn't think Rishi Sunak or Jeremy Hunt were bad, although they were not charismatic. I wish we still had them.

I've never liked Keir Starmer or Rachel Reeves and Rachel Reeves has been as expected and yes she has crashed the economy.

Just what happened to the centre right, that's who I want to see in power, there is massive gap in the centre on both the left and right.

I wouldn't put it pass Labour to be so petty to build relationships with dodgy countries like China rather than the USA because Trump and Musk don't like Starmer. Whatever you think of the USA, they are still our closest ally historically.

This government is NOT thinking what's best for the UK, but what's best for their personal ego and ideology.

Nevermind91 · 10/01/2025 11:09

The economy has been far from stable for many years. Part of the UK's problem is that we don't have savings any more, after Gordon Brown sold off our gold reserves to the lowest bidder (China) and dished out the proceeds in disincentivising benefits.
Now, more than ever, Labour needs their ideal world to happen. But it won't. People will always have aspirations beyond being part of an Identikit society.
If all previous Labour administrations are anything to go by, the only guarantee we have is that unemployment will have gone up by the time they leave office.

Not just cross but literally sneering at anyone who dares to challenges them. It doesn't seem to have occurred to them that a significant proportion of the public is smarter and far more capable of critical thinking than they are. Reeves will have to go eventually if enough pressure is put on - Starmer will sacrifice her to save himself even though she's one of his close allies.

God yes that sneering, added to cluelessness. Such arrogance

And it means they’ll keep hammering the private sector without joining up the dots

Reeves is a mistake but I’m not sure anyone else will understand the issue in Labour

She won't resign, they live in an echo chamber and won't ever admit they are wrong! You can see in interviews rhat they get really cross when they are challenged/questioned.
They will have their sycophants telling them they are doing great and those are the only people they listen to. Phillipson, Raynor, Streeting, Reeves and Starmer are all cut from the same cloth.

This is the thing that stands out most to me about them and the main reason I didn’t want them to get in. They are so fucking arrogant. Wolves in sheep’s clothing the lot of them.

RR now running off to China is reminiscent of Angela Rayner fucking off to go clubbing in Ibiza when they brought the winter fuel cut in - either absolutely tone deaf/thick or they are so arrogant they don’t give a fuck.

They are. Who would do differently in Labour? They’ll prop each other up and continue

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 10/01/2025 10:31

They can but they're too stubborn to admit they were wrong. Reeves either needs to resign or be removed - the sooner the bettter to halt the catastropic decline in the economy.

The current chancellor should return from China and sort it out!
( doing what I'm not sure , but there is clearly a crisis )

Missing in action yet again - a very convenient way of avoiding addressing a crisis that she alone has created.

How are they undoing the damaged? How? Explain specifically about the economy and business? What have they done to go in the right direction on growth for the country?

Edited

This.

The “but they are undoing the damage of the tories” is really getting old now.

You have swallowed the cool aid and are sticking with it more like.

The only way out of the mess that's been brewing for the last 30 years is economic growth. Get the economy growing steadily, then tax revenues will rise and then things like education, the NHS, benefits and national debt can be sorted out.

Higher taxes might give an immediate boost to public finances, but long term higher taxes lead to higher prices, fewer jobs and a bigger welfare bill. You can't tax your way out of a crisis, you can only grow your way out and this takes decades.

Politicians are only interested in the immediate term because they know they will be gone in a few years. On average a Prime Minister serves five years in all. Usually there's the relatively successful one who does ten years and a bunch who do less.

It's shocking how the public fall for their lies every time. Many people genuinely seemed to think that Labour would be better. They're just as shit as the Tories. What concerns me most is this is Starmer's honeymoon period still, he can still trot out "it's the fuckin' Tories' fault" line at the dispatch box. The current set of front benchers are the best they've got. When they fuck up too much, they'll get replaced by a set of less competent people.

At least Truss and Sunak had the excuse that they were the 4th and 5th best iterations of the last Tory era. Truss replaced third-rate Johnson who replaced second-best May who replaced the man who actually got them elected and, in hindsight, seems like the most competent PM we've had in a hell of a long time.

Truss was the only premier recently that has had a plan for growth.

Yes it was very poorly laid out - it never actually made it to the execution stage - but at least it was a plan and many people feel it would have worked. Sometimes you have to try something different.

Everyone else including Starmer has done nothing but hope and pray.

Yes it was overturned quickly

What will do the same with Reeves, Starmer and co?

They can’t see the problems they’ve caused

One of my family members has been told by their employer that the lowest performing 30% of last year’s intake should start looking for another job asap as as the employer re shapes the work force in response to increased employment costs.

At the same time, their landlord has said he is selling up in response to increased taxes and proposals on Renters Rights.

Dismal does not really describe it.

We are selling up too. And my db and IL’s who are LL’s.

It’s popularity politics - no thought given to the future problems they are causing and exacerbation of existing ones. There are homeless people on our high street now (never seen this in 20 years in our MC area).

Dh is an economist and he’s pretty aghast at what they’ve done. Shit’s gonna hit the fan!

At least the Tories had the decency to resign when they really fucked up. With these Labour bunch everyone knows they are incompetent from the PM to Reeves, lammy, Rayner, Philips, but they are so thick skinned and stubborn.

I guess the question is what’s worse. One huge mistake that is called out and then a series of changes made. Or a series of mistakes that aren’t admitted to and compounded by more mistakes and obfuscation to the point that it isn’t possible to unpick and correct the original mistake?

it’s reported in The Times today that Reeve has asked all Ministers to review their policies and instructed them to “cease anti growth measures”. Which, if true is ironic as it’s her polices and measures that are anti growth!

I also work with the public sector and can attest they are clueless, money wasting, inefficient bunch that thinks there is unlimited budget. And you don't see non performers get fired either, not even the guy who I'm not exaggerating, works maybe 40% of his contracting hours and missing most of the times. They just move sideways to different teams or get promoted! And the oh so clueless clearly DEI hires who are managers. The fat needs trimming desperately. And labour wants to make it even bigger 😩

This in spades! - No one is confronted any more for poor performace in case of hurting peoples feelings or they go off sick for a duvet day to rebalance ones equilibrium! The real world is harsh - wish it were different though 🤔

SoapySponge · 10/01/2025 10:02

twistyizzy · 09/01/2025 18:06

Using the same metric as Labour used against Truss, Labour have already crashed it!

If you believe that, you will believe anything.

You do realise that UK economics don't operate in a void don't you.

Do you really think the Tories will wave a magic wand and put it all right? They had umpteen years to do it and didn't and couldn't do it now even if they wanted (which they don't as they have Labour doing their scut work for them).

The thing is despite the Tories major wobble with the Truss budget, we were starting to see green shoots of some growth and confidence in the UK from investors. The labour budget was very sharp and ambitious but markets don't respond well when there is no clear plan for growth for business. They won't get a second term sadly - when real change starts to happen and trickle into every day life.
