Why do so many people criticise vegans?

I'm a meat eater!

However, I don't understand why people criticise vegans so much.

They aren't hurting me and are trying to save animals and the environment.

What's wrong with that?

Surely people should be more critical of me because animals are killed for me to eat?

I think partly it's because they say things like it's easy to be vegan.

I was vegan for 4 years and spent a lot of time cooking everything from scratch (well pretty much everything- didn't make my own milk or tofu but did make my own cheese). It wasn't easy- in fact it took quite a lot of planning and preparation and occasionally I ate processed vegan options. I have since realised how v unhealthy they are.

Also I think many vegans think that because it works for them it works for everyone. I have a long term health condition and disability and just wasn't able to get enough protein. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell me what I should have done but the fact is that I just couldn't consume enough pulses, nuts, tofu etc to get enough and my bloods (which I have regularly for my condition always showed low iron, haemoglobin etc). I was also developing muscle wastage (my Occupational therapist told me this).

I had to put my health first.

In general it really is easy, but nobody has to be a martyr - if everyone just consumed a bit less meat and dairy it would be a massive improvement.

This.

All the time. Not to mention "where do you get your protein from?" and the evergreen "what would happen to all the poor cows if we stopped eating them?" .

It's endless. It's hardly ever the vegan that starts it, and we just want to eat our bl👀dy dinner without an inquest or comment about it.

Maybe it's because so many of them are very quick to start criticising meat eaters? Or because veganism is seen as being the 'in thing' at the moment, the latest 'woke' cause? Or because so many vegans don't waste a minute in announcing that they are a vegan, regardless of whether or not it has any bearing on the situation? Don't get me wrong,i totally get where they are coming from,as a near-vegetarian myself (I eat meat or fish probably once a week,if that). But I admit I could never commit to total vegetarianism let alone veganism as I like salmon, tuna and cheese too much!

How many vegans doing all of this have you personally come across in real life?

By existing we do harm, sp the logical thing to do is to work on minimising it. Not go 'fuck it, I'll just kill everything'

Hopefully, if you acknowledge that your existence is causing harm, you aren't having children. That would be hypocritical of you.

But what if one or more of those children found a way of doing something really beneficial to the world?

I think a lot of people find that even when they aren't being pushy about it, many vegans seem to have an air of moral superiority about their diet. A kind of - well, I recognize not everyone can eat this way, but of course we all know deep down you should...

Which most people don't actually think is a valid assessment or the vegan diet.

It rubs people the wrong way. The vegans that really don't feel that way get tarred by the same brush.

Well, we are morally superior though, aren't we, by simple virtue of not subjecting living creatures to pain, fear, and death purely because they taste nice, damaging the environment in the process?

StripyShirt · 11/01/2025 23:12

We're seen as odd and different, and that always generates hostility from the masses. Same as when I was a punk and was often physically attacked for having coloured hair.

I've been vegan for years. I've never 'lectured' anyone and don't know anyone who has. I try to set a good example by keeping in good physical shape and having a good sense of humour. I will, however, explain why I'm vegan when the inevitable questions appear from meat eaters as to why and what. I generally start with saying "Ethical and environmental reasons", expanding if appropriate. Ethics are fairly subjective, so I rarely go far down that route, using objective facts about the environmental damage caused by meat and dairy instead.

People have odd ideas about us. The most prevalent seems to be that 'vegan food' is made thus by adding some weird 'vegan dust' to ordinary food (Look at the recent furore when the National Trust revealed that most of their fruit scones have been vegan for years 😃). Either that or we all live on avocado and fake steak. The fact that 90% of what most people eat is 'vegan food' seems to be overlooked; A recent study found that people would actively avoid food labelled 'vegan', while happily eating the same food labeled as 'healthy option.

People also love to try and 'catch us out' by trying to find some instance of us using animal products.

It has to be said, however, that veganism can attract the unhinged 😱

“I recognise not everyone can eat this - but of course we all know deep down you should”

this with bells on as I’ve been told repeatedly that there is no medical reason to eat meat and I’ve refuted it. But they still come at me.

HereForTheAnimals · 11/01/2025 23:07

@Sasskitty I've never used it. It was a Christmas gift from my sister. I'm sure oat milk will make it stay hotter for longer though 🤣 - no evidence to back this up though

I never said I was original… still funny ..
ps. That mug looks too wide to keep a drink hot enough.

It is quite funny yes, and I can take jokes and have a laugh as a vegan, just as when I ate animals. The only thing is is that we hear the same thing day in and day out, and it does get boring. We all know we are deficient in protein, calcium, iron and B12, we are that deficient that we are all actually dead, but we want to annoy omnivores so we are now ghosts pushing our superior morals onto all you meat eaters.

As a vegan, I've been to a thousand deserted Islands and have only had a pig as a friend - we remained friends and I didn't eat him/her.

I wasn't fast enough to chase down a deer, and so my canines were inadequate to do anything else, I couldn't catch it, nevermind rip it to bits with the canines I was born to kill with.

I do love animals though, and so do so many others and that means that I wake up every day knowing I'm not alone.

here's one: how do you know if someone has a boring sense of humour? if they find out you're vegan and then claim their same old "jokes" about vegans are "hilarious". 😘

Ads do the veggie and vegan options at Christmas too or did you miss them

I think the point she was making that you seeing a carrot isn't going to make you feel ill. Unless you have some horrible traumatising carrot phobia. Where as seeing dead animals (which is how they can appear once you stop eating them and an aversion develops) on TV at Christmas...not particularly joyous.

Sasskitty · 11/01/2025 21:41

😂 sorry (not sorry) for not reading the full dull thread. Are you vegan? (Rhetorical)

Don't worry, people making the same joke over and over thinking it's original and funny, as if vegans have never heard it, make it SO much more interesting. 😉

Because of their superior holier than though our way is best let’s ram it in your face attitude. Be vegan but do it quietly as no one else cares. We all make our choices. You don’t see meat eaters ramming their choice down everyone else’s throats

I know many vegans. Only one uses tech, despite knowing it contains animal products. None of the others have phones, computers etc. A couple of them
live in a commune.

It absolutely is true that tech contains animal products, but vegans like to ignore that, because they enjoy using tech.

or because many of them don’t live in communes and need tech for their jobs?

It’s possible to try to change some elements of society whilst having to live in it, generally.

I get that you have 2 brain cells fighting for 3rd place but that clearly says most of them not all of them but like I said if the shoe fits Cinderella.

It's clear to see that the old adage that meat has allowed us to become smarter, also another cliche thrown at vegans, hasn't really worked well on you dear.

You’re a vegan good for you 👏🏼but my comment wasn’t about the vegans who are doing it because they love animals my comment was about the loud obnoxious vegans that want everyone to know about it. But if the shoe fits Cinderella.

Veganism is about doing it to the best of your ability. I think its perfectly sensible not to do something that makes you ill as an individual.

But the b12 thing is odd...because you know there's this thing called a supplement right?
Most people are deficient in various nutrients at any one time. We only really notice it when we are ill. Presumably, if your illness requires lots of b12 in order to prevent symptoms from worsening, you may still benefit from taking a supplement anyway.

I agree with you, I don't have time for the 'everyone can go completely vegan with ease brigade'. Because it leaves no room for individual circumstances. People aren't a monolith.

But anyone can work it - to the best of their own ability. Falling short of anything that causes health issues.

Edited

Allergies so can’t take a supplement 🤦‍♀️ my B12 deficiency is shot to shit hence the meat so not a weird one at all. See told you I’m a strange case well I think I’m an amazing one cos I’m alive.
