Is it disrespectful/problematic to take a sex toy in hand luggage to Marrakech?

We are going to Marrakech for a holiday in a few weeks and I would like to take my vibrator.

I’m likely to take just cabin bags.

Will I encounter issues either going through or leaving the airport? I know it’s not illegal but I don’t want issues - or to appear disrespectful.

No judgments please, advice only.

All this talk of 'used vibrators', it's nuts. I mean, these things get thoroughly washed and cleaned. You've probably got hairbrushes knocking around your bags that are dirtier than most women's vibrators.

I feel like this is a parallel universe with a type of women whom I've never met in real life

See you all.

seven201 · 10/01/2025 20:21

Last time I went to the airport you had to remove all electricals and put them in a separate tray to be checked. Whilst you may be comfortable putting a vibrator out on display, it may make the security person embarrassed and also wouldn't it be a hygiene issue and they have to clean the tray?! If you do it, put it in a clear bag so they don't have to handle it.

ArtfulDenimSheep · 10/01/2025 20:06

I would just buy one when I got there as I would be embarrassed if my hand luggage was opened you would have to throw it away or risk it being found on your way back home. I was alright about the suggestion to opt for the manual alternative just for a few days.

MaroonedinWales · 10/01/2025 19:40

Mid twenties observant Jewish work colleague leaving for airport to holiday for a week after work in the mid 80's at an American Investment bank in London. Left his backpack unguarded while out for lunch. Cue inflatable sex doll planted in his backpack and he never complained to us on his return about him being stopped and throughly checked at both departures and arrivals while with his family. Dined out on that story for years and gained a lot of kudos for brazeninf it out. There are worse things than a purple vibrator to worry about in our world today.
Take some handcuffs too and you'll get some attention I imagine. Sweet that you would even have to ask.

I personally think it’s a bit tone deaf and of poor taste to carry a pink penis in hand luggage when travelling to conservative cultures where many are religious and would find it offensive, especially they might have to open/examine / touch it …i would be mortified … (not because I’m prude but because i would feel it is a bit inconsiderate/ selfish/ disrespectful to subject others, whether officials, families etc..to the sight of my used pink penis just because I’m cool and unembarrassed about it),… I think if you are concerned about being judged, chances are you would expose yourself to more judgement at airport setting, than on here,I would keep it in check in luggage out of sight and out of respect to a culture that is private and conservative, if you really want it in hand luggage I would go for something that can pass as a neutral massager rather than a body part. ( even a plastic hand, kidney or finger would spook many.. 😂)

choccytime · 10/01/2025 19:37

Why would you even want to go there, never mind take a vibrator !

You'll have to taje tge batteries out or it will have to go in "the tray" at the airport

No it doesn’t

StrikeForever · 10/01/2025 18:59

It’s fine. I take mine in hand luggage because rechargeable electricals are not to be put in hold luggage. Mine is the largish shoulder massage looking type. A couple of times it started running inside my hand luggage case in the airport, sending the case traveling around on its own 😮 😂🤣 I have learned to let the charge run down. It was removed from my hand luggage at Dubai airport and I was asked about it. I told them it was a shoulder massager and it was fine.

As for the poster asking “can’t you just use your hand”. For many older women (speaking from experience), the answer is no. More stimulation is now required. No doubt there are younger women with that issue too. So wind your bloody neck in!

Unnecessary comment

Seems entirely relevant.

Actually, I think there is a fair bit of judgement on this thread. Lots of remarks that suggest that what the OP is suggesting is offputting/disgusting. It's feels pretty prudish.

Whilst I probably wouldn't bother taking one, as it seems potentially a hassle, I totally understand why the OP would want to. Most women i know use and carry a vibrator with them when they travel.

Gosh, we obviously move in very different circles.

Triggered much? Did I say you specifically were racist? No. Pipe down with your assumptions and misconceptions. And I'm far from daft or ignorant. Lumping a whole nation of people together in one condescending description, as some have, is stereotyping and racist.

I'll do you the courtesy of assuming you're in need of a snickers with your reply. Not only have I visited as a tourist but I've also stayed with Moroccan families on several occasions who I got to know over several visits, and stayed in non tourist areas also, solo, but you neglect to reference that.

Whilst there are issues, there are issues in the UK and probably every other country aswell.

I am describing MY experiences, perhaps it is because I've been as more than "just" a tourist, perhaps because I'm respectful and streetwise but I've NEVER had issues when travelling solo or with 1 or both teen daughters and only a minor issue when with ExH. Perhaps if you get issues when you travel it's because you act a twat, if you're anything like on here, jumping on people for describing their experiences. Grow up.

Is this poster for real? This comes across as a bit of a kink if you ask me e.g. having your vibrator on display in a public place.

This!

Been to Morocco dozens of times, both Agadir and Marrakech. Don't recognise the descriptions above of surly and rude customs officials I must say. Never had an issue. Nor have I ever had an issue with taking in a sex toy (in my case a womaniser) either in hold luggage or carry on.

As to why not leave it at home, well my home life is busy and im often exhausted by the time i get to bed and holiday sees me more relaxed and with arthritic fingers hand is not an option!

Also re headscarves, personal choice. Agadir is more westernised than Marrrakech in terms of dress etc. In the souks and around the medina/Jma el F'naa square in Marrakech it is more conservative and I would recommend less revealing clothing though there are plenty of tourists who walk round in skimpy outfits which is disrespectful imo.

Never had an issue being harassed either, been many times solo, with 1 or both daughters also (teens). If stallholders are persistent then a loud no and carry on walking. Many will laugh and joke saying Asda price, lovely bubbly etc.

At the end of the day you're not going to be walking around waving a sex toy at locals, enjoy your holiday.

I have been to Agadir, Marrakech and Essaouira and the mountains.

I am/was a seasoned traveller and very respectful of local dress and customs.

The harassment I faced in that country still makes me angry, years later.

Very nasty men,

WorriedMumofTeen16 · 10/01/2025 00:40

Sheesh, there really is some racist views coming out in latter posts.

Also:"But I’m sure it’s a lovely experience walking around the markets, eh?"

It really is. I cannot describe Jma el Fnaa (and the souk in Agadir..the so called Sunday souk) except to say it touches all your senses. It's a cacophony of noise and smells, colours, some wonderful workmanship (Agadir souk is better for this as it has distinct sections and you can see crafts in real time from metal beating to make lanterns, to carpentry making amazing furniture, men making beautiful clothes and doing repairs to clothing, and so much more).

As I said in a post above, I've NEVER had an issue wandering deep into the souks, often away from the tourist areas either alone or with 1 or both daughters. Ironically, the 1 issue was when I was with then husband and we were corralled away from the souk and into a side alley. Soon solved.

I've also stayed in private riads in non tourist areas and have been lucky enough to find amazing local bakeries and even get caught up in a wedding procession in the narrow streets (and was made very welcome) while doing so.

I appreciate some have issues, but in dozens of visits, often solo, I haven't and am going again in Feb, to Marrakech, and staying in a riad just off Jma el Fnaa. I'll be respectful, enjoy watching the bonkers transformation of the square late afternoon (with around 100 pop up restaurants built in just over an hour) and wander around the souks.

I think the comment about using my hand is judgemental about using a vibrator.

Why do you think this? It’s not remotely judgemental, just suggesting a temporary alternative if you’re worried about your vibrator. Bemusing that you interpret it as judgemental. Do you have internal shame about using sex toys or something to interpret such an inane comment like that? Either risk it, use your hand, or go for one holiday without getting yourself off (you won’t die!)

SwerveCity · 09/01/2025 22:43

Op is so snippy, sounds like you need to use it now luv.

RebeccaBunchh · 09/01/2025 22:37

Some users out here really show why certain tourists and their mentalities are more disliked than others lol

"Well they won’t be civil marriages, but if you’re religious and someone in your Mosque is willing to perform a ceremony for your young daughter so that she’s married in the eyes of God, who cares about the difference?"

Well, I would argue that it matters whether it's a legal marriage or not.

Why? It’s not going to stop young girls being repeatedly raped and impregnated, and used as a domestic slave by middle aged men, is it?

Sugarfish · 09/01/2025 20:02

I lived and worked there for a bit. They won’t give a shit. Yes, it’s a Muslim country but nothing like Saudi Arabia for example. As another poster said they have their own sex shops. They also have nightclubs where you can drink alcohol and strip bars. I wouldn’t go waiving your vibrator around in public, that likely will cause you some issues. But security in the airport won’t care. It’s a massive tourist destination, they’ll have seen them before.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2025 20:01

"Currently, there is no specific law prohibiting forced or child marriage in Morocco. "

How can that be if the legal age of marriage is 15, soon to be 17?
Surely those young marriages are not legal ones?

How can that be? Seriously? Well they won’t be civil marriages, but if you’re religious and someone in your Mosque is willing to perform a ceremony for your young daughter so that she’s married in the eyes of God, who cares about the difference?

I find it quite shocking that some of you think countries known for Human Rights violations are always complying with the laws.
