Recently my son had a new year's party with all his friends (he's 16) they used the house whilst I was away visiting my parents, I trusted him with the house as he is a mature kid. However when I got home the next day I found that the house had been absolutely trashed, cups and dishes everywhere and the dog had been dyed yellow and pink! I've cleaned the house as much as I can but there are things like holes in the walls and the dining tables leg has been broken. I've since grounded my son taking all his devices away, and I won't be letting him have/go to any more parties especially not in my house. The damages to the wall and things are going to cost upwards of £2500 he is going to be getting a job and paying for all of it.
Is this a reasonable response?

Yabu you caused all of this by allowing an unsupervised nye party for teens in your house.
Let this be a lesson to you never trust teenagers especially not at an unsupervised party

Did you know he was going to throw a party?

YANBU to make him pay a contribution but >£2500 is extreme.

Arguable.

Many people would argue its completely insane to let a 16 year old host a New Years eve party unsupervised in a house.

You should probably be thankful half your stuff wasn't nicked.

BlueMum16 · 09/01/2025 11:16

I can't believe you left a 16 year old to have a party while you were away in the first place.

Was he home alone (without a responsible adult)?

HPandthelastwish · 09/01/2025 11:16

Id put this firmly at your door. You allowed the party to go ahead with no adults to intervene, this is your fault.

Has he ever hosted a party before? Doing so on New Years was daft. It's quite possible that someone shared the invite online and it got out of hand

Lostworlds · 09/01/2025 11:15

Yes more than reasonable, you trusted him and he broke your trust and allowed his friends to destroy your house and probably terrify the dog.

You were insane to allow a 16 year old host a party unsupervised.
I agree with making him get a job and pay however as long as he is genuinely contrite and working to fix this I'd give his devices back or at least partially as it won't do him good to be isolated.

Yes

But of course he probably didn’t do any of it and tried to stop it!
