Worrying not heard from husband

Polkadotbabushka · 09/01/2025 10:43

So I used to be a bad worrier and have been a lot better lately. However my husband left for work at 7am and got the train near us. He text at 710 so knew he was on the train. Now I can’t get hold of him. The WhatsApp’s are going through with one tick. He hasn’t been online. He isn’t answering when I phone. I’ve emailed him at work and no reply. Now he could be in a meeting without his phone.
He would arrive at work at around 830/845 as it’s about a mile walk from the station.. and it’s about an hours drive away from me at work.

Now I am panicking as his phone just rings. And WhatsApp are still on grey. He could be in a meeting without his phone which isn’t unusual but I don’t know what to do if I don’t hear from him. I can’t relax. All sorts of horrible scenarios have gone through my head and I have horrible anxiety stomach ache!

I’m glad he got in contact OP - these panic spirals are so awful and I wouldn’t wish them on anyone. Propranolol and sertraline really helped me.

wineandagoodbook · 09/01/2025 11:38

@TorroFerney I am entitled to my opinion. You have commented on mine and another PP yet you have not written your own post, just like to point out that other people are wrong and that you are right?

I had never had anxiety at all before but when I hit perimenopause, OMG! It hit me like a train. I was massively spiralling about the tiniest things and my sleep was terrible as I just lay in bed thinking about stuff.
I am a little bit older than you but I still have a regular period. You can still get HRT, it is just a different combination of hormones. It has been transformative. You do have to push to get it though.

Thornybush · 09/01/2025 11:34

Gosh OP you really wouldn't want to be married to my dh, he is so bad at replying to messages and answering calls. Although I am probably similar. Sorry you are so anxious, it must be awful being on edge and worrying all the time.

EarthVenusMars · 09/01/2025 11:34

I'm glad he's ok and you know now what happened. Also sorry you're suffering with this, and your husband sounds lovely and supportive.

despairnow · 09/01/2025 11:34

It's called catastrophising and the more you o focus on it the worse it will become.

despairnow · 09/01/2025 11:32

Oh my God. Why message him at all unless it's a serious emergency? He's an adult. Trust home to look after himself. It drives me crazy if family m message me at work with trivial things just because they are free!! You can't answer messages at work at least I can't and it's just annoying and unnecessary.

HolyPeaches · 09/01/2025 11:32

This must be an awful way to live OP. I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m glad your husband is understanding and caring.

As someone who also suffers with anxiety, please try and remember our anxious thoughts are totally irrational. Easier said than done I know😅 It’s really difficult to switch back to the logical and practical mindset when we’re in the middle of an anxiety attack where we assume the absolute worst case scenario and that everyone is dead. I also know it doesn’t really help when people may say “Oh just don’t worry about it” because if it was that easy, no one would have anxiety! So please don’t beat yourself up about it.

Well done for realising you need help with this. Be completely open and honest with the GP, be open minded for alternative therapies and things you haven’t tried before.

I hope you manage to calm down and have a good rest of the day. Take care x

Theoldcuriosityshop · 09/01/2025 11:32

Wow, people are being harsh. Anxiety is just awful, just because no one on here seems not to have these type of thoughts they have no idea what's it's like. I understand how she is feeling.

How about you read my other posts. This isn’t usual for me. Plus I am getting help.

I hope it makes you feel better to be an arsehole to a stranger!

Thank you so much for being kind! I am only 38 so probably too young for HRT and still have periods but I do feel I need something as the citalopram I have taken for two years isn’t cutting it!

my husband was saying arrived many years ago but we stopped that as I was coping fine. Today just slapped me around the face!!

I would still mention it to the Dr’s and see what they say! I have a friend who is 39 and just started HRT. They’ve went from having extremely manic episodes to being very level and “them” again. Not saying it is a fix all or even applicable, but it’s worth mentioning if the perimenopause is indeed what’s making things so much harder.

Oioisavaloy27 · 09/01/2025 11:30

I hope your getting help and that you don't smother your children like this otherwise they will end up with serious problems.

There are techniques that can be used, that work.

MissDoubleU · 09/01/2025 11:28

TorroFerney · 09/01/2025 11:23

I know what they mean though. If you are in back to back meetings all morning you wouldn’t have the time or opportunity to check. Being busy whatever that’s with home or work is a distraction. Obviously better to work on the anxiety but it’s why unhappy people bury themselves in work!

This is not how anxiety works at all. Having a busy life doesn’t mean you just “won’t have time to worry” - the worry overpowers completely. It can make you unable to even move, let alone think/focus regardless of what you may be scheduled or are actively trying to do. This is a blatant misunderstanding of how severe mental health issues work.

GinaDreamsofRunningAway · 09/01/2025 11:27

I TOTALLY understand you!!! Its horrible when you have such anxiety and are spiraling and looking for support and reassurance. However well meaning they are, you have had some unhelpful comments here that have no doubt actually made you feel worse.

When I became perimenopausal I was EXACTLY like this. My anxiety was off the scale and my thoughts would spiral and my mind would go straight to the worse case scenario instead of the rational explanation. It was a horrible, horrible time and actually really distressing.

The thing is I would KNOW I was being irrational and it would make me feel so stupid but nothing I could do or tell myself would stop it. So people saying 'just get on with your day and forget about it' believe me its WAY easier said than done. When you are in an anxiety spiral its difficult to control and distract yourself from those bad thoughts.

Like you, some awful experiences triggered my responses to always think the worst and it has taken some work on myself to reverse this.

I am okay now but it has taken HRT and some therapy to 'put my thought process back to normal'. It is good you recognise that these are not normal thoughts and I encourage you to seek some help to help you understand why you do this and to help you get better.

Good Luck OP, I hope you manage to find a solution that works for you.

Anxiety like this doesn’t suddenly pop up out of nowhere, I hope you get help.

I am well aware! As I said before I’ve had bad anxiety before and was coping well.. I think this is hormone related. I have a drs appt.

queenrollo · 09/01/2025 11:18

Are you on HRT? My previously well controlled anxiety spiralled in a similar way when I hit perimenopause. My very understanding DH got into the habit of texting 'arrived' when he was travelling to meetings. When I eventually got a GP who was willing to give me HRT it definitely helped. The other thing that genuinely helped me was combining talking therapy with hypnotherapy. The latter wasn't cheap, but with a good practitioner I found a huge improvement after just three sessions.

Be gentle with yourself, you recognise this is an issue and hopefully your GP will be able to help you when you see them. You came here for reassurance during an episode when you were struggling, please don't be put off by some of the less sympathetic responses.

Thank you so much for being kind! I am only 38 so probably too young for HRT and still have periods but I do feel I need something as the citalopram I have taken for two years isn’t cutting it!

Thanks for the helpful replies but people saying just get on with your day.. I am trying! I am not enjoying this feeling trust me! I physically feel unwell worrying! I am well aware it is stupid. As I said before I was worrying my usual antidepressants hadn’t been working for a while and my hormones are all over the place so I do have a gp appt soon.

I called via WhatsApp and normally plus emailed at work but if he’s in a meeting he won’t reply to any so I am trying to tell myself that’s the reason. I wish the horrible worse case scenarios wouldn’t come to the forefront of my mind!!

If anything awful has happened you would have been informed.
Would it help to ring his workplace just to make sure he turned up OK?

OvertiredandConfused · 09/01/2025 11:24

Polkadotbabushka · 09/01/2025 11:09

This is new as this hasn’t happened in years and I never panick like this! We have been together 18 years and it happened in the early days but I think perimenopause is causing me some issues. He’s very understanding and supportive and just said sorry he didn’t let me know… he didn’t have a go or get angry! He’s kind and considerate and knows I’m not doing this to be annoying! My sister lost her bf in tragic circumstances when I was 13 and it’s effected me a lot and as I say I’ve had lots of help in the past I just need some more now it seems.

sharing locations doesn’t work on his new phone but does on his work phone that he left at home! He has this on as I pick him up from station so it’s good to know what time the train comes in!

Reading this about your previous experience, I think you'd really benefit from EMDR therapy. It must so hard hard living with this anxiety and have it flare up.

Leeds157 · 09/01/2025 11:23

Op I'm glad you've heard from your husband and he is fine. I also get stuck in this exact spiral of worry when I couldn't get hold of a relative (a LOT less now than I used to) and didn't realise until reading your thread and some of the replies the types of help out there for it and that this happens to others. It's all consuming when the panic grips you x

TorroFerney · 09/01/2025 11:23

Auldlang · 09/01/2025 11:15

That's a really nasty and judgemental way of putting it.

I know what they mean though. If you are in back to back meetings all morning you wouldn’t have the time or opportunity to check. Being busy whatever that’s with home or work is a distraction. Obviously better to work on the anxiety but it’s why unhappy people bury themselves in work!

Polkadotbabushka · 09/01/2025 11:23

As I have said I now know he’s ok and I can relax.

I know this isn’t right! Once I had the idea in my head, the most likely scenario just didn’t cut it and for the person who asked I thought he’d been murdered! Yes extreme I know!!

The news that I try to avoid usually just lately has been horrible and it was on at work so it was unavoidable over the last few days when I’ve been massively hormonal and I’ve found myself tuning in to the negative awful stories!

I have a GP appt. Yes my husband is kind and caring and this isn’t a normal occurrence as I’d been managing really well but it feels like a massive switch has changed and I suddenly can’t cope! I don’t pester him at all as I said this was just today… new to me for many years!

some kind replies on here have me in tears at my desk!

I do have a busy life for those who said I must have a sad little life! I have a child, I work, I go to the gym, I take my son to after school activities 4 days a week and help my husband with his other job. This is clearly so strong that no amount of distraction helps!

Be reassured I am getting help!
