To be annoyed that my DD teacher did this

DramaLama0 · 06/01/2025 21:54

Waiting to be dismissed at end of the day and it was raining heavy. Teacher had a very large umbrella. A few children were there including my DD. DD and some others moved and starting moving towards the umbrella to go under and all of a sudden teacher saw and did a turn so that the other children were under it but not my DD. It didn't matter too much as she was going to be dismissed soon anyway but not until she had seen me. I felt sad that she was the only one not under it and the teacher seemed to move with purpose so she couldn't be under it, but the other children left to be dismissed were?

OP posts:

@Whydoeseveryonewanttoargue I'm not too fussed if anybody agrees with me or not tbh. Which is nice 🤭

Fair enough and healthy. We agree to disagree on your over reactive approach to this complete non issue (my opinion).

Jesus. Who'd be a teacher?

Well, exactly. Unfortunately, an increasing number of teachers have been asking themselves the same question and resigning.
One day, the OP and anyone on here suggesting she "tell the teacher she's watching her" will be back on here complaining about continual supply teachers and lack of continuity and "why hasn't my dd got a proper maths teacher" etc.

I've never read anything this ridiculous on MN before and I've been on here for getting on for 20 years and have read some batshit stuff in that time.

OP and that copperoliver poster need to do that thing where they point at their own eyes and then at the teacher, so she knows they're watching her. Preferably after giving copperoliver's speech. If they could merge backwards into a shrub a la Homer Simpson, it would make it perfect.

ChimneyRock · 07/01/2025 10:10

God, I can't even manage to let my husband under my umbrella without it shifting so he one of us gets wet. I have been known to take a golfing umbrella out to the school gate at the end of the day and I usually have a little crowd of bodies shuffling up close to try to get under it. It's a crazy game!
Mental note to self: ditch the umbrella and have a hooded coat on standby instead in case any crazy loon parents at our place have a similar mindset to some on here.

I love a teacher complaint thread - still waiting for one about me! This has to be up there as possibly the number one most batshit crazy teacher complaint on mumsnet ever. I wonder if the OP feels silly yet? Oh well, of I go to pointlessly victimise children for the day…

Absolutely right. Take comfort no one agrees with the OP and thinks she is crazy for bringing this up. I’m sure you are an awesome teacher with no complaints to be made, but maybe just in case consider investing in a larger umbrella 😂.

BarbaraHoward · 07/01/2025 09:41

The teacher wasn't trying hard enough. Everyone knows that if you move an umbrella quick enough, everyone nearby gets sprayed with water from it. Missed a trick there, teacher.

@DramaLama0 Feeling sorry for your daughter and yourself after reading about the teacher's spiteful behaviour 💗
I hope your daughter didn't notice what actually happened and that it seems she was picked on by the teacher.
No matter how many people here say that a teacher is not capable of such horrid behaviour - yes they are!

I'm really interested to know how many of the people who have commented here are teachers/work in a school or are related to/are friends with teachers!
It's so very strange that the commenters just can't seem to accept that a teacher could have a nasty, spiteful mind and choose to bully a child or several children.

Anyhow, like I said earlier, I hope your daughter didn't realise how horridly the teacher behaved towards her and that she's not affected by it. Best wishes to you both 💗💗

Not a teacher here but your need to be offended by a teacher who thought enough to bring an umbrella for the kids doesnt smack of an awful human being.

It wasn’t spiteful. You have completely read this wrong and overreacted.

No one agrees with you. You want to be offended about NOTHING. Seriously get a grip.

KittenPause · 07/01/2025 09:14

Tbh I wouldn't have even noticed unless it was a significant and deliberate move that you couldn't help but notice

I think you probably did notice it as a deliberate action to exclude your DD from the umbrella

However not much you can do really

I'd just mention it to her on the quiet, I'd say I saw what happened you purposely moved away from her, and I don't care wether you have bonded with her or not but you do not treat her any differently from the other children, I will be watching closely to make sure this doesn't happen again and I may also pick her up early sometimes just to check things are going well.
But one thing you should know my child will not be made to feel uncomfortable and will not be treated any differently to any other child, you will remain professional at all times.
Before anyone starts mentioning about the message seeming a little threatening, I work in a school, sometimes people have their favourites and make it clear, there's no way I'd put up with it, 100% it happens I see it all the time

If you had said that to me, I'd have taken it to SLT and they'd be speaking to you!
Baffling that you bloody work in a school too!
People like you, are part of the reason why I left working in a school after nearly 15 years there. Batshit.

Too right. Everyone is so quick to be offended.

Parents like this (entitled and presumptive without any information) are the absolute worst.

Why on earth would you ever speak to the teacher like this. Batshit crazy is right.

Maybe you’re joking. Even so, don’t you think it’s a bit harsh to say that?

People come on threads to air their worries, test their opinions or have a laugh. Perfectly legitimate to express what’s bothering you.

And most replies don’t think she needed to ‘protect’ her DD other than by taking her home. It was raining in the playground. If kids don’t have their own umbrella, their coat will get wet. As it would if it was raining when she went to school. The teacher was clearly doing their best to shelter the kids, which they weren’t obligated to do. And kids have to learn to be assertive rather than their parents intervening on their behalf. If she wanted to go under the umbrella with the others kids, she could have done.

Kids can withstand heavy rain. Mine used to play football in it in shorts.

My response was an effort to point out that the OP made this out to be a big thing and that her child seemingly was deliberately abandoned to a watery fate by this teacher who walked off with the umbrella.
Numerous PPs have offered advice - largely that the teacher was not deliberately being mean to the child
The OP has not been back to answer the many questions PPs have posed
So, slightly sarcastically, I admit, I wondered why this wasn't escalated by the OP if they thought their child was being deliberately excluded by the teacher
Umbrella-gate on a Tuesday morning...

It's posts like this that make me realise that quitting was absolutely the right decision.

User543211 · 07/01/2025 08:22

This thread is so funny not also not funny. Stuff like this is why I quit teaching.

Maddy70 · 07/01/2025 08:22

Huge overthink here. The teacher will be moving as she's dismissing children. She can only fit so many under her umbrella. Ridiculous comment

EdithBond · 07/01/2025 08:17

CouldItBeAnyMoreObvious · 07/01/2025 06:36

She picked on your child, deliberately allowing her to get wet?
Ok, did you report her to the Head Teacher or similar?
Did you challenge her?
Ask her why she did this?
No, you came here to tell us your tale. If you thought your child was being picked on, why not fight to protect her?

DurhamDurham · 07/01/2025 08:15

She did a 360? She'd be in the same position. In fact given the shape of umbrellas it's difficult to imagine how the teacher turning in any degree, while standing in the same spot, would have affected the brolly coverage. Ok, I'm overthinking now Grin

Superhansrantowindsor · 07/01/2025 08:12

I really can’t think of anyone I know doing this and I would assume it was completely unintentional. I’m not saying teachers aren’t mean sometimes but this doesn’t sound like it to me. Surely you have been in a situation where you have bumped into an acquaintance or friend at the shops and you didn’t notice them until the very last minute. The teacher was probably miles away.

Wolfpa · 07/01/2025 08:08

You’re overreacting and making this about you and your daughter when it isn’t.

also if the teacher did a 360 she would have ended up exactly where she started

WashingDryingForEver · 07/01/2025 07:59

I think it’s sweet that the teacher was trying to protect the kids with her umbrella. OP, have you had previous reason to think your child was being targeted by this member of staff?

WashingDryingForEver · 07/01/2025 07:58

whippy1981 · 07/01/2025 06:37

You didn't have a logical one.

As you said, neither of us know what was meant. Your detailed explanation of the supposed rationale was far more fantastical, given the lack of info.

Anyway, if one of my medical team said that their patients ‘pay the price’ for their rude relatives, I would be discussing this in supervision. Language is important.

Imagine the skill it takes to purposely angle an umbrella just so one small child and one small child only, nobody else, is excluded from being under said umbrella. Making sure everyone is covered but no not this one child they must stay out in the rain (!)

She's wasted on five year olds she should be teaching physics!

Particularly angles and circles!

Having thought about this, if there were only some children under the umbrella (assuming not the whole class) and it was end of the day, surely OP could have been more prompt in getting there? Suddenly picturing that those under the umbrella are the children where parents are generally a bit later and that the rest of the class have already been dismissed.
