Are people rude or just oblivious?

I had my hair done the other day, hairdresser asked what I used to dry it and I said the AirWrap. She said I bought a different brand, there’s no way I’d waste that much money on a product when I can get cheaper that’s just as good …

I had the full two weeks off at Christmas. Two friends asked what I’d had off and told them and they said - I’d never take that much time off because it’s a waste of leave ..

Have your own opinions sure but why the need to put someone else down? Am I being too sensitive?

These comments wouldn’t bother me

ticktickticktickBOOM · 06/01/2025 18:23

. . . and for those saying 'it's just my opinion / I say it, like it is'.

No it's not - it's just being a cunt.

Differentstarts · 06/01/2025 18:15

Yanbu I hate it when something nice is happening to someone and others feel the need to be negative about it iv had this multiple times with things and it's just unnecessary and it's not you being oversensitive it's them being rude and mean. It's like sharing you've booked a holiday and someone saying it's crap their. Or buying something new and someone telling you how you got ripped of. Or like one of my friends everytime she comes round telling me how much smaller my house is then she remembers every single time and goes on an on about it why she's here but it's really backhanded comments like it's so cosy, it's so cute, it would be nice if you had a .... but I suppose you wouldn't have room for it anywhere, it must drive you mad the kids running about in such a small space how do you cope I just couldn't.

I find that people are pretty thoughtless in what they say. I'd find those comments a bit snide.

and not only unnecessary, but unnecessarily hostile

BotterMon · 06/01/2025 18:10

If people make comments like that to my response to their questions, I just reply "Good for you". It shuts them up and isn't rude.

ueberlin2030 · 06/01/2025 18:09

'Ah well, it'd be a bit dull if we were all the same, eh?' is a good reply. 🙃

imtoo · 06/01/2025 17:56

But I didn’t ask for the opinions. They asked me something and I told them.

If I said to you “what car do you drive” and then you told me and I made a comment about it being a shit model then that wouldn’t be rude and unnecessary?

People are allowed to give opinions without being asked for them 😳

I think it's ruder to assume they need an invitation from you.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 06/01/2025 18:09

People just talk for the point of talking - they don't think about the words coming out of their heads and the effects the pointless words they say have on others.

So many emotionally unintelligent numbskulls around.

In my head I'd be thinking - 'I couldn't give a shit what you think.'
Imagine saying that out loud 😆(what's wrong? it's just my 'opinion')

FloralGums · 06/01/2025 18:07

Honestly I think it depends where you are from.
I moved from the North where we called a spade a spade. I have found now I am in the South it’s softly softly catchee monkey.

ruethewhirl · 06/01/2025 18:05

Wilfully missing the point here, but did your hairdresser happen to mention what she bought that was as good as the Airwrap but cheaper? Enquiring minds need to know...😄

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 06/01/2025 18:03

People don’t have basic manners any more. Manners are all about making other people feel comfortable, which often means smiling and nodding and keeping your mouth shut, instead of voicing a contrary opinion that might cause offence.

TappyGilmore · 06/01/2025 18:02

Neither of those examples are what I would consider a put down.

The comment about the AirWrap was perhaps a put down directed at the AirWrap - but not at you personally.

The comment about leave is a commonly held view - lots of people think why waste their leave at that time when it will be quiet with few people in work, and you can probably get away with shorter days? Save your leave for another time! Didn’t stop me from taking two weeks off though!

Surely just a difference of opinion and not rude? I know people with expensive handbags and I would never buy one myself because I would only drop it in a puddle, have my pen/drink explode all over the interior. Doesn’t mean I don’t understand why other people want them, I just wouldn’t want one for me. In the same way I love my car, but it’s not to everyone’s tastes - if someone told me my car was too flashy and expensive then that’s their opinion, they don’t have to drive it. I do thousands of miles every year and I love travelling in comfort. Nothing makes me happier then winding my way through mountain roads with my favourite music on and at the wheel of my car.

I just don’t personally ask people things and then make a negative comment.

It’s not about difference of opinion. I don’t care about that. I just don’t see what it achieves to say to someone who has a designer bag “wow I’d never pay that much”. Like is the aim to make them feel bad?

Neither of those examples are putting you down. It’s just a different opinion. Probably more polite just to say “oh that’s nice” though!

Well red wine, cheese, beach walks… but driving through Yr Wyddfa is up there!

Both examples are very blunt - some people have no filter. I had the 2 weeks off at Christmas and was told the same thing by a colleague who uses most of their leave taking a Friday off. I have never commented to them

Yeah I just don’t get it … your leave isn’t coming off their allowance so what does it matter.

Ohthatsabitshit · 06/01/2025 17:58

I find “really how interesting” makes them buckle down and repeat themselves and often look uncomfortable as they register their comment themselves.

Tlikestotalk · 06/01/2025 17:57

I think my biggest revelation in my life is learning to laugh off peoples comments, when i was teen to mid twenties i was so affected by everyone around me! a mildly rude shop keeper with a tone would send me spiralling for a day thinking i have some kind of repulsive aura.
But now I'm a little bit older i just laugh it off and think 'God, aren't people strange?' And to put it in perspective youve probably said lots of things to people where they've thought the same as you now. I don't even think half the time people know how they come across, recently at a works-do after a colleague complimented how shiny my hair is someone butted in and said I mustn't of washed it for days! It was very rude but I just laughed because what an odd thing to say!
just try not to take it personally. I know it's hard but we're all odd creatures sometimes.

stargirl1701 · 06/01/2025 17:57

Both.

They shared their opinions though. People are allowed to disagree.

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/01/2025 17:56

Hairdressers make a lot of comments that make them seem
completely oblivious. It’s weird for a profession that is known for being friendly and chatty.

imtoo · 06/01/2025 17:54

Titasaducksarse · 06/01/2025 17:51

I don't see it as rude at all! You shared something and the other person shared their view on that thing. I wonder if you're sensitive/embarrassed/ something about the Dyson cost maybe?

Nope the air wrap was a gift and I absolutely love and get so much use out of it.

In term I wouldn’t turn to someone who said they had a different brand that’s cheaper and say I couldn’t possibly use something so cheap on my hair.
