Pasta..

I went for dinner tonight and the menu said the dish I ordered was made with penne.. When the food arrived it was fusilli!

I hate fusilli, it’s the worst pasta beside angel hair (capellini), so I actually politely sent the dish back and asked for something else (they apparently had run out of penne and forgot to say).

AIBU - all pasta is the same
YNBU - fusilli is the worst pasta (or enter your worst)

How awful for you , OP! You poor thing! I assume you have logged this crime against carbohydrates with 101 and you are being supported. Forts and prayers, hun, forts and prayers. Have a hand hold.

HoraceCope · 05/01/2025 07:48

i hate linguine

buttonousmaximous · 05/01/2025 07:45

Conchiglie and farfalle are far superior but no it wouldn't bother me if pasta came in a different shape.

ttcat37 · 05/01/2025 07:38

Do you often have sensory issues with food or usually refuse to eat things if they’re a different shape to what you’re used to?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 05/01/2025 01:04

Genuinely upset by how this vote has gone. Different pasta shapes are not the same. Different texture, they absorb sauce differently.
They should at least tell you they've run out and try to substitute a similar pasta shape.

I wonder if some people are voting based on the differences between pastas and others are responding to the OP sending the dish back and reflecting that this behaviour was unreasonable?

RossGellersCat · 05/01/2025 07:37

Don't shoot me OP, but penne is my worst. 😂

WonderingWanda · 05/01/2025 07:34

I like fusilli, it's my preferred choice. I think the issue is obviously texture and density. I'm not sure I would've cared either way. I would just be excited to have real pasta and not the gluten free mush we have to eat at home because of dh.

HoraceCope · 05/01/2025 07:27

i never buy fusili myself, much prefer penne or spirali
what is fusili for?

5 yr old's attitude.
Tell an Italian, or anyone what you've said here and they would laugh.

CAN WE ALL STOP THE FARFALLE HATE PLEASE 😭

Have a go at orzo or something 🤣 fake rice!

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 05/01/2025 07:05

@MumWifeOther all pasta is horrible anyway!

Christ0nABike · 05/01/2025 06:49

There is a book which explains why certain pasta shapes work better with different sauces. Never read it so can’t impart any knowledge on the subject, but I’m sure it’s important!

Agreed. What is the purpose of farfalle ffs.

They look quite pretty on those pasta and dried pea pictures that kids make in nursery? 🤣

YANBU to expect to be served what you ordered.
YABU to think fusilli is the worst pasta. That place is reserved for those disgusting bow ties that stay rock hard in the middle and overcooked at their soggy frilly little edges. Can't remember their name as I never buy them.

Agreed. What is the purpose of farfalle ffs.

Frangywangywoowah · 05/01/2025 06:38

I initially thought 'get a grip' then remembered there's a dish I make at home and usually use conchigilie or rigatoni at a push. Partner insisted on spaghetti instead one night saying 'it didn't matter'.
Oh my goodness, it changed the whole texture of the dish. I wouldn't say horrid but it became just a bowl of bleurgh so i do get where you're coming from.

HoraceCope · 05/01/2025 06:37

Christ0nABike · 05/01/2025 00:27

No I wouldn’t have sent it back for that. But neither would I pay £17 for a bowl of pasta!

agree

Farfalle aka Farfaffy because they're a faff to get right!

Agree . A quote from one of my favourite utube channels. Texture is flavour . I think you were right to send it back op . The different shapes give a completely different dining experience on the tongue and I would have also been disappointed .

This ☝ I can't stand the bows either, now I would definitely send those back

chattyness · 05/01/2025 06:10

I love Fusilli the best! I never buy penne and wouldn't knowingly order it as a meal option either , but if it arrived on my plate I'd eat it , it's just not my favourite

They should ideally have let you know that the dish was being served with a different pasta, but in the grand scheme of things it's not a big issue. Not sure how someone can like penne but not fusilli tbh though.

Annabella92 · 05/01/2025 05:02

Is this the height of Western decadence? Is this why we're in civilisations decline? I thought this pasta fuss was a troll post.

Sakura7 · 05/01/2025 00:57

I don't get this. Penne and fuselli are pretty much interchangeable for me.

Sending it back seems a bit OTT and wasteful.

I agree. What a waste of food. Pasta is pasta, I couldn't care less what shape I was served.

Pumpkinseason3 · 05/01/2025 04:46

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 05/01/2025 01:39

Are you getting pappardelle and farfalle mixed up? Pappardelle is like very wide tagliatelle, farfalle is like the little bow ties.

I am NOT a fan of farfalle, but I do like pappardelle with a good mushroom sauce.

I am not a particular fan of Fusilli, but the pasta I would send back if I got it unexpectedly would actually be Penne. Rigatoni is lovely, but penne is too thin.

For a basic tubular pasta other than Rigatoni I would go Cavatappi.

For a spaghetti type pasta then I would take Linguine over Spaghetti any day, but actually the best is Fusilli Lunghi Bucati.

@HOTTOGOisastupidsong Was coming to ask the same question lol. Definitely getting pappardelle and farfalle mixed up.

Agree with your pappardelle in mushroom sauce 🤤

Disagree with your dislike of farfalle 😳 love it. Particularly good in a cold pasta salad 🤤
