To think I’m not doing anything wrong

Back to work on Monday after a lovely 2 weeks off! I’m currently reading a book (well I was before I came on here) with a glass of wine and left over Pringles from Christmas.

DH was out doing his hobby and he’s just come back home and asked me why I was drinking. I said I’m having a glass of wine, not exactly having shots rolling around everywhere. He said that I shouldn’t be drinking while looking after DC and that drinking alone in the house when it’s not Christmas anymore is “weird” DC1 is upstairs in their room and DC2 is sat on the floor playing.

AIBU?

@BeLilacSloth In my opinion there is a difference between “drinking” and having one glass of wine. No harm has been done so drop the dramatics

Why ask for opinions if you’re going to talk to people like this for stating their opinion? No I don’t think you should be in sole responsibility of your children while drinking even one glass of wine. Put the wine down and interact with your children. God help your husband.

TheWonderhorse · 04/01/2025 19:03

I don't drink any more, and can't really imagine fancying a glass of wine with the kids around even when I did. But my reaction to being told what to do is very predictable. I'd have been chugging it from the bottle and giving him the finger.

Viserrisk · 04/01/2025 15:24

No reason at all to be concerned about my drinking. I rarely drink. I don’t do “nights out” anymore. I only really have a couple if I’m out having a meal or on holiday. I was just finishing off the left over wine from New Year’s Eve.

DC are 4 and 8

No issue with the wine.

But I wouldn't be able to read a book while looking after kids of that age.

Maybe the 8 year old, but not the 4 year old.

Possibly a flick through a magazine, but when I read a book I get totally sucked in. Not possible with a 4 year old, for me, anyway.

I don’t know I like a drink as much as anyone; wine, spirits, beer, cocktails, not much I don’t like.
However I can honestly say in all of my 60+ years I have never drunk on my own. It would in fact feel ‘weird’.
I can’t really identify why, I suppose it’s something I associate with problem drinkers who can’t wait for their next drink.

Agree😊

LouisvilleSlugger · 04/01/2025 18:55

He sounds like a tit. Crack on. Enjoy your wine. Have another just to annoy him.

Christy135 · 04/01/2025 18:55

FFS the hospital argument, a person can drive after one glass of wine.

Mumsnet really makes me dislike people. Creating daft arguments for the sake of it.

You yourself know it does not look good - dc2 observes his or her mother drinking alone. The children are left to their own devices. It just looks rubbish, looks bad. Did I have a drink when I wanted when I was looking after dc? Yes, I did. But I did not not make it conspicuous. Never in full view of dc. And I also read to my heart's content, but in bed, after I interacted with dc - they will grow up so fast, and leave the house - one day you will think - why did I sit then and read that stupid book when I could have played with the dc on the floor? Or had a chat with the one upstairs.

What!!

You never read in front of your children??

It’s one of the best things you can do because it teaches them that reading is enjoyable and not a chore that is being forced upon them by parents/school.

Did you never let your kids play by themselves, or with each other or with friends?

Honestly, your kids not even being allowed a few minutes to play by themselves is mean and really controlling of you.

NovemberMorn · 04/01/2025 18:51

I hardly drank before I had a child....wonder what that says about me?😁

Yes YABU - what if one of your children needed to be taken to hospital and you were over the limit to drive?

I don't think people should drink when they're taking care or children but I hate drinking full stop but the inability to drive somewhere is kind of a moot point there are people who simply cannot drive

I don't even have a car!! What will I do if any of my kids need urgent care?

You could still have a glass - assuming it’s not one of those half-pint jobs.

Every bloody time, its like mumnset bingo! How bloody often do you take your kids to A&E of an evening ?

Taxis are a thing

And not everyone can drive/has a car so I always think this is a stupid argument

Richiewoo · 04/01/2025 18:37

Tell your husband not to go out do you can have a drink!

MsJinks · 04/01/2025 18:36

It's pretty well accepted that kids seeing their parents enjoying reading then take more of an interest in books and reading themselves. Seeing parents have a drink will also let them learn that a drink is to be appreciated and can be on its own.
Seeing hidden alcohol and hidden reading may make them more thrilling though! Kids rarely miss much - mine were well aware I sneaked a Flake in the evening and went to some lengths to get a bite out of it too!
Anyway, not sure why I added this as I've obviously been an absolutely appalling parent and even continue as grandma as in letting every adult have a unit of alcohol Xmas day whilst u18s were in the house 👀

Viserrisk · 04/01/2025 18:34

@myrtleWilson I am wondering if it was a troll because surely nobody actually thinks like this

I’m not a drinker but this is stupid. Plenty of people don’t drive!

Op YANBU.

I’m not a drinker either, I am also not a driver.

If my children need to go to hospital and it’s not urgent I would get the bus (lucky to have a limited stop service that gets me there in 15 minutes), if it was urgent I would ask a family member, friend or call a taxi and if it was life threatening I would be calling 999.

I would imagine OP would use one of these many methods if she felt like she couldn’t drive.

myrtleWilson · 04/01/2025 18:32

Howling at the thought of not reading a book in front of the children - pass me the gin smelling salts

Yes YABU - what if one of your children needed to be taken to hospital and you were over the limit to drive?

I love this arguement. It's completely ridiculous. In 31 years of parenting 3 kids I've never had to do this. And if I had to I would get a taxi.

Waitingfordoggo · 04/01/2025 18:29

You aren't doing anything wrong by the sounds of things. However, if you rarely drink and you're drinking alone and in the afternoon, I can see why your DH might be concerned. I would find it odd if I found my DH drinking alone in the afternoon- mainly because he doesn't ever drink alone so I'd probably wonder if he was ok.

But in itself, what you're doing isn't 'wrong', no.

starsinthedarksky · 04/01/2025 18:28

You were having a glass of wine. Not doing bottles of the stuff. It is perfectly reasonable to enjoy a couple of drinks at home (no matter the time of year) whilst you’re relaxing.

This is also coming from someone who doesn’t even drink!

Deadbeatex · 04/01/2025 18:28

I finished a bottle of vodka last night that I bought Christmas 2023 so I'm not exactly a big drinker, I don't think you've done anything wrong at all! It was a glass of wine not a box of wine following a full bottle of spirits, tell DH to wind his neck in.

If you were drinking constantly or it was interfering with your ability to function/look after the DC then yeah maybe cut down/ pick your timing better but in the circumstances you've described? I'm jealous and good for you for taking some time to yourself

I actually think hiding your drinking is more worrying than having a glass of wine on a Saturday afternoon while the children are playing happily.
