To think I’m not doing anything wrong

Viserrisk · 04/01/2025 15:12

Back to work on Monday after a lovely 2 weeks off! I’m currently reading a book (well I was before I came on here) with a glass of wine and left over Pringles from Christmas.

DH was out doing his hobby and he’s just come back home and asked me why I was drinking. I said I’m having a glass of wine, not exactly having shots rolling around everywhere. He said that I shouldn’t be drinking while looking after DC and that drinking alone in the house when it’s not Christmas anymore is “weird” DC1 is upstairs in their room and DC2 is sat on the floor playing.

AIBU?

Maybe they are. Or maybe they were raised by alcoholics/have trauma around alcohol and calling them names doesn’t help anyone.

And maybe they weren't. Not everyone here has been traumatized by drunk parents and if they have they should have the nous to know the difference between one glass of wine on one afternoon, as compared to a week's binge on vodka.

Look forward to the thread “I went out and came home to my husband drinking beer while looking after 2 young children”

pretty sure that would be an immediate LTB

No it wouldn't. People would obviously ask for context. I've seen many a thread with this exact subject.
Majority of people do not respond LTB they ask how much he was drinking and what the exact scenario is.
One glass of wine whilst reading a book? Hardly anyone would be saying LTB unless there was some huge backstory.

Lollipop81 · 05/01/2025 19:44

Of course this is fine it’s one glass of wine for gods sake. Hardly a hard core drinking session is it 🤣 some of the comments astonish me.

MurderousFrieda · 05/01/2025 19:44

I don’t touch alcohol but I certainly wouldn’t have a bloke telling me what to do. I’d actually start drinking to spite him

Errors · 05/01/2025 19:41

I wouldn’t and haven’t called you a nut job. But you were very judgmental towards the OP for doing something that is totally fine it’s just that you wouldn’t personally do it.
You have your personal reasons not to do it, that’s cool. But you don’t get to tell other people not to. That’s her choice.
I wouldn’t do it either. Doesn’t mean I think the OP is a terrible mother.

I never said that OP was a terrible mother. She asked for opinions so because I don’t believe it’s ‘totally fine’ i’m completely in the wrong? Not forgetting her own husband also does not believe it’s totally fine.

Viserrisk · 05/01/2025 19:42

@BeLilacSloth Ok so you have your personal reasons as to why you wouldn’t drink around children. That’s fine. But the first thing you said was for me to take some responsibility? You were being very judgemental from the start

Thatcastlethere · 05/01/2025 19:41

God some people are mumsnet are wierd.
Yes it's completely fine to have a glass of wine at home whilst reading a book even if you've got primary aged kids.
The glass of wine is fine.. the reading a book is fine..
Honestly some people in this thread are nuts.
Can't believe people exist being this uptight.
People on here suggesting it's abusive to read a book whilst your children play 🤣

OP YANBU your DH is being really odd and controlling.

Errors · 05/01/2025 19:41

BeLilacSloth · 05/01/2025 19:36

Thank you, I think it was a tad unfair that I was called a ‘nut job’ on this thread several times because I don’t agree with drinking around children for my own personal reasons.

Livelaughlurgy · 05/01/2025 19:37

Neither here nor there but a taxi to our children's hospital would be my preference in an emergency if I was on my own so I could avoid parking which is a nightmare...... that's the thing about risks though, you can't look at them in isolation and make a sweeping statement.

Getting worked up over one glass of wine also doesn’t help anyone.

That’s a bit of a reach.
In that case, they shouldn’t project that trauma on to the OP and judge her for it. She isn’t the one causing anyone to have trauma around alcohol.

EDIT: I didn’t call anyone names, either.

I don’t think abstaining from alcohol is uptight. I think judging the OP for having one glass of wine are uptight.
For context, this year was the first time ever I was a little tipsy around my son (2 glasses of Prosecco)
He is 9. It’s never been something I do or ever wanted to. Never been a midday or afternoon drinker. Can go weeks without it. I just wouldn’t judge the OP for doing something so harmless

@Billydavey There’s drinking and then there’s having one drink🤷🏻‍♀️

She only had one glass of wine. And DH is at home from his hobby, so he can take charge now and she can have another glass!

I can't drive, should I never have had my children..?

I am afraid not. You will have to return them.

The number of people on here who don’t like being criticised for their drinking but are happy to name call those who don’t drink/don’t drink while responsible for children is unreal! Different things suit different people and families. I don’t think everyone who drinks or drinks in front of their kids is a raging out of control alcoholic or a bad parent. Why are people who don’t drink labelled uptight, stuck up, no fun, boring, judgemental, etc? We must be the only country in the world where choosing not to enjoy a harmful substance is seen as the strange abnormal choice 🙈🙈🙈.

Yes YABU - what if one of your children needed to be taken to hospital and you were over the limit to drive?

I can't drive, should I never have had my children..?

AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin · 05/01/2025 19:27

DowntonShabbie · 04/01/2025 23:50

Lads, if your children are terrified after you have one glass of wine, the problem isn't the wine. Its you. You're the problem.

I feel very sorry for the people who are apparently entirely unable to relax due to the constant worry about what terrible fate might befall their children if they let their guard down, even for a second 😂

Then, as others have suggested, taxis are available. What do people who don't drive/don't have a car do in an emergency?

Well exactly. And even if you drive, you might (heaven forbid!) be out and about without your car when an emergency happens. I certainly don't spend my life in readiness for driving to a hospital at a moment's notice. Comes up a lot on here though.

I usually drop the kids off at A&E first. That way I can come home and enjoy my glass of wine in peace

This made me laugh out loud!!!

I don’t think you did anything wrong OP!! You seized an opportunity so fair play. If you were all out to lunch together nobody wouldn’t judge you having a bit of wine with your food would they?!
Christ there are some uptight people on here

"won't put you over the limit" - depends where you live. In Scotland the alcohol limit for driving is minuscule, 22 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath compared to 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath in the rest of the UK.

Then, as others have suggested, taxis are available. What do people who don't drive/don't have a car do in an emergency?

Single50something · 05/01/2025 19:03

Sounds fine to me. He sounds like he has an issue with something..what a wally
