To think I’m not doing anything wrong

Back to work on Monday after a lovely 2 weeks off! I’m currently reading a book (well I was before I came on here) with a glass of wine and left over Pringles from Christmas.

DH was out doing his hobby and he’s just come back home and asked me why I was drinking. I said I’m having a glass of wine, not exactly having shots rolling around everywhere. He said that I shouldn’t be drinking while looking after DC and that drinking alone in the house when it’s not Christmas anymore is “weird” DC1 is upstairs in their room and DC2 is sat on the floor playing.

AIBU?

As a child I was never taken to A&E - the first time I went to one (friend in sporting injury) I was in my late 20s, first time I went for something that had happened to me I was around 50.
What do DCs do these days that visits to A&E have to be considered as a daily occurrence?
Neither of my parents could drive, so I'd have been stuffed anyway.

Ladybyrd · 04/01/2025 16:17

Maybe he should spend less time indulging in his hobby if he's so concerned.

It's a really small risk - I wouldn't judge anyone for it. It's just irritating me that so many people are acting as if there is no risk at all. There is, OP is choosing this risk, that's fine. OP's DH may not be fine with this. That's all.

It’s one drink. You’re being ridiculous. OP’s DH has no right to judge her for one drink - and not do you.

Pour yourself another one and smack your lips loudly after every sip. Follow up with a tequila chaser.

🤣. Do this and then go to bed with said book (or better, go out) and let him look after the kids.

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 04/01/2025 16:17

People hand wringing about emergencies - you realise some people have kids and don’t drive? I imagine people will do whatever these people would do in the case of an emergency- get a lift, taxi or ambulance

ueberlin2030 · 04/01/2025 16:14

Ambulances are for serious emergencies and wait times can be long.

pp was talking about life or death unless I’m getting my pp’s mixed up.

Even if not life threatening, taxis are also an option.

It’s a glass of wine. She’s not doing shots off a stripper.

Even 1 glass of wine can put someone over the limit where I live (as already stated).

Some people are just pricks.

My father in law is the same. Couldn’t have a single drink around him without comment. Even when I told him to stop, he still made tutting sounds. Next time he comes over, I’m going to fill an empty wine bottle with water and just chug it in front of him, hopefully he’ll combust.

Add some elderflower cordial or ribena to make it look more convincing.

Who made him the boss?

This was what I was thinking!!

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 04/01/2025 16:11

Bit of a nerve buggering off for the day then moaning that someone else isn’t watching the kids properly

I always vowed never to drink any alcohol while being responsible for a minor, just in case there was an emergency. Drink drive limits are lower in Scotland too. Not judging you, but it felt right to me not to.

Pinetreethree · 04/01/2025 16:11

I really hope no-one who is worried about the possible need for A&E ever goes on holiday anywhere they can't drive, or picks accommodation that isn't within minutes of a hospital.

Gremlins101 · 04/01/2025 16:10

Of course yanbu.

Also I don't understand the "what if a child needs to go to hospital" thing. Do those couples never have a drink together in the evenings, because there would be noone to drive to hospital?

Mydogisamassivetwat · 04/01/2025 16:09

thecherryfox · 04/01/2025 16:07

What about people who don’t drive? What do you think they do😂

If they want a glass of wine, they pitch a tent outside A&E with the kids, just incase of all the terrible Accidents which most definitely will occur if you dare to drink while looking after a child.

Kashmiri24 · 04/01/2025 16:09

What a judgemental prick. It's Saturday afternoon, not mid morning on a school day.
I would tell him to fuck off and pour another glass.

I'm Team DH. It's a bit Bridget Jones to be day drinking alone at home.

Yes YABU - what if one of your children needed to be taken to hospital and you were over the limit to drive?

What about people who don’t drive? What do you think they do😂

What risk? Please explain what scenario means you have to.urgently drive both children to hospital but don't need an ambulance or assistance? I can't imagine one. And I don't think you can either.

ManchesterGirl2 · 04/01/2025 16:05

Yes, if you need to be able to drive your kid to hospital at all times, you should also never

  • go on a trip by public transport,
  • go on a walk more than a few minutes away from the car.
bluebee17 · 04/01/2025 16:04

Is there a backstory with you and drinking?

If not your husband does seem to be going a bit over the top

Silvertulips · 04/01/2025 16:04

I think it’s a nice way to spend an afternoon, the kids are happy and playing you’re getting a bit of relaxation - sounds like a great Saturday afternoon.

GoldsolesLugs · 04/01/2025 16:03

FirmLilacBeaker · 04/01/2025 15:59

What is the likelihood that two children under the supervision of a parent will fall victim to such sudden, unexpected harm that an ambulance isn’t necessary but the tiny time difference between a taxi and driving yourself (if there even is a time difference, given that a taxi doesn’t have to find a parking space etc.) is a matter of life and death? Like what scenario could you possibly be envisioning here?

I don’t even drink and I think this is ridiculous, guilt-inducing puritanical bullshit!
