To think I’m not doing anything wrong

Back to work on Monday after a lovely 2 weeks off! I’m currently reading a book (well I was before I came on here) with a glass of wine and left over Pringles from Christmas.

DH was out doing his hobby and he’s just come back home and asked me why I was drinking. I said I’m having a glass of wine, not exactly having shots rolling around everywhere. He said that I shouldn’t be drinking while looking after DC and that drinking alone in the house when it’s not Christmas anymore is “weird” DC1 is upstairs in their room and DC2 is sat on the floor playing.

AIBU?

No reason at all to be concerned about my drinking. I rarely drink. I don’t do “nights out” anymore. I only really have a couple if I’m out having a meal or on holiday. I was just finishing off the left over wine from New Year’s Eve.

DC are 4 and 8

Sounds like a strange reaction to have on your DH’s part… maybe he’d had a bad day!
Certainly has put me in the mood for a glass now!

Sure their are alternatives to driving but the right question is in the same vein which is will you have the right mental capacity to deal with an emergency situation? Will you have the mental capacity in a potentially stressful situation to do the right thing or the correct thing?

Sure this completely depends on how much has been drunk but one large glass of wine is considered over the limit.

Of course you will. It's a glass of wine, not 13 tequilas and a bump of coke.

Is dry January bringing out the sanctimommies or what?

Has OP said that it was a large glass? If not, maybe it wasn’t.

Nope but by your own logic maybe it was. But we also don’t know if this is a one off, if she drinks often and alone and if it is an ongoing issue.

The crux of my post was to ask generally if the OP had the right mental capacity to deal with a potentially stressful situation with her children not to judge the size of her glass. A small glass of wine on a very small frame for someone who doesn’t drink will be felt and potentially put someone into the wrong capacity. A large glass on a larger frame of someone who drinks more often may not have any affect at all.

Onky she can answer these questions which she isn’t…..

Yes, but your children are slightly more at risk because you don't have a car.

To paraphrase Mean Girls: “Don’t have sex, because you WILL get pregnant. And drive.”

What a strange thing to say! At what age are children no longer young enough to sit on the floor and play? My 11 year old was doing that the other day. Do I need to tell them they're too old for it?

Well it's been a while since my 14 year old proactively chose to 'sit on the floor and play' - so I assume the point at which that becomes somewhat rare or unusual is at some time between those ages.

The ops post clearly implied she has a youngish child, which was my point. And she was sitting drinking a glass of wine at 3pm, whilst in sole charge of them.

I think that's odd, for want of a better word. That's all.

You might think 3pm wine drinking whilst looking after dc is totally ordinary...lots on the thread seem to so you're not alone.

Yes YABU - what if one of your children needed to be taken to hospital and you were over the limit to drive?

Why do people say this every time?! There are plenty of parents that can't drive - what are they supposed to do?

What a disgusting way to talk to another adult who holds a different opinion than you. Imagine telling someone to grow up because they don’t need alcohol to tolerate their husband and kids 🤣

xmascrackerr · 04/01/2025 17:26

Bloody hell it’s a glass of vino, she’s not doing coke off the kids iPads 😂

That first glass is so lovely, I treated myself on the last week of term to a lunchtime glass whilst watching the holiday after wrapping all the presents and before the little darlings broke up for two weeks. Just me the dog the twinkling lights and Jude Law..was pure bliss!

Don't be foolish.

I think one glass is absolutely fine.

Does he have any reason to worry about your drinking op?

This was my thought. Is the OP trying to gage what is normal due to above normal, consumption as otherwise this is an slight overreaction from both OP and husband?

I have never understood why people feel the need to drink in the day by themselves while watching children. But one once in a while shouldn't be a problem.

GrannyJJ · 04/01/2025 17:25

Viserrisk · 04/01/2025 15:18

@Chowtime It was only one glass I’m sure I would have been fine. If not there’s always taxis

A large glass would take you over the limit.. it has 3-4 units in a 250 glass whereas a single gin has one unit.

adviceneeded1990 · 04/01/2025 17:25

I wouldn’t drink in sole charge of children and anyone I know in real life would think 3pm solo drinking was a bit odd (and I’ve got friends that love a drink 🙈🤣) but MN always thinks this is fine so you’ll get plenty of support on here!

You’ve inspired me. Now sitting cuddled up with the cat with a large glass of white wine! Cheers op

TheGoodEnoughWife · 04/01/2025 17:23

Massive cheek considering he was off not watching the children at all. Sounds like his nose is out of joint! Best he watches them going forwards to stop and future occurrence.

As someone who had a life or death situation with my young child we called an ambulance. If serious enough for a time critical response an ambulance is required. I had had a drink and may or may not of been over the limit (it was a while ago when limits were a bit higher) however was in no fit state to drive due to the immense stress of the situation and an ambulance was appropriate. (He was okay in the end!)

Cheers OP, I’ve just poured myself a drink

(fingers crossed my children don’t develop a serious illness in the next 30 minutes 🤞)

This thread has led to me pouring a wee cognac…before dinner!

Living dangerously on a Saturday eve. Rock n roll!

[Hope the recovering alcoholics and Al Anon members forgive my humour 🙏]

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 04/01/2025 17:22

Don’t feel bad. Me and DH have a couple of drinks each on weekend evenings while we watch a film or play a game with some nice food - while being solely responsible for our 4 year old. Shock horror

Ponoka7 · 04/01/2025 17:20

It is still Christmas! It is the 11th day of Christmas. No pipers are piping, but that needn't stop us popping whatever your tiple is. I'm having a drink tonight and I've bought a bottle to have Monday to celebrate the Epiphany. I'll have a drink on Candlemas as well. I wouldn't want to make baby Jesus cry.
Child has accident, you are looking at a head injury, broken bone or blood. You need to sit with them, in a taxi, not be driving under stress, with them hysterical.

Yep, correct - I made an assumption that she had a car available to her.
I'm aware that this is a fucking stupid argument and I'm being a pedant, but
all I did was suggest that maybe DH had a different idea about risk than her (and a conversation about this would be a good idea), and I get a million posters attacking me and claiming that there is no risk.

A million posters? 😂 Give your head a wobble

You know that it is a risk? PP don't seem to agree with you.

It is tiny.
It is mitigated in so many ways
It may be more or less of a risk depending on other factors - as has been explained to you.

No one has said there is NO risk - but in the grand scheme of things, it is not worth worrying about when the OP has had ONE glass of wine and blah blah mitigating factors. .

Do you have teenagers?
My experience as a parent of teens and working with them is that if you obsess and insist to the degree that you are doing on this thread abut a tiny risk they will switch to permanent eye roll mode and not listen when they REALLY need to take notice.

AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin · 04/01/2025 17:16

DowntonShabbie · 04/01/2025 16:37

More than what? Maybe she lives next to the hospital. So it's your children more at risk, because you'd have to drive them.

See how it works? Calculatung risk is not easy.

Yes, this! Before you can realistically decide if the risk has increased, you would need to determine the baseline, which, of course, would vary from family to family.
