To be horrified at how much worse the "grooming gangs" actually were than I thought

There are several other threads about Elon Musk, Labour, Jess Phillips, etc.

I don't want to discuss them in this thread. The other threads keep getting derailed and I just want a place to discuss how absolutely horrifying the new details that emerged this week are.

I knew that there were "grooming gangs" who would entice girls in care or from broken homes to be their "boyfriends" by giving them cigarettes and vapes, for example.

I didn't know that girls as young as 11 were being brutally tortured and raped, that people had been killed over it, including one policeman who arranged for some of the rapists to get off, houses burnt down. I didn't know the details of the violent gang rapes which I won't repeat here but you can find on X.

I'm just genuinely shocked and horrified.

Some of the court transcripts circulating are from 2013. How did I not know?

I disagree. You obviously haven't lived in the areas referred to in the grooming scandals.

No, there aren't gang controlled areas in the UK - it's a far right online conspiracy theory.

You are wrong. Speak to any local police officer in such areas and they’ll tell you, if you can find one prepared to speak honestly. I remember, when my children were small, asserting to a police officer who policed my street that our area was pretty laid back and crime free and he told me to consider the idea that I, as an older, white woman, was experiencing the area very differently from a teenager - any race. He was absolutely right, as became apparent when my teenager was repeatedly approached for County Lines purposes to the point where he refused to go out after dark unless accompanied by a family member. Only the unaffected - ie non working class usually, confidently assert that there are no gang controlled areas and that to say there is is Far Right. Ridiculous!

First post nailed it. It was actively repressed.

What a load of tosh. I read the Jay report (focused on Rotherham) in 2014 after it had been published. It was not hidden away, the information was there for anyone who wanted to engage with it.

This is rubbish. Logically and empirically

In what way?

Nordione1 · 05/01/2025 16:00

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 05/01/2025 15:38

Have you ever discussed these concerns with a Muslim person?

I'm sure that would go down well.

SleepToad · 04/01/2025 16:34

Women's hour on radio 4 was reporting at the time on this. Parents were interviewed who tried to get help. One was told by Rotherham social services that his daughter had made a "lifestyle choice" to be a prostitute . She was 13.

the whole problem is that Pakistani men view white girls as less than human and the powers that be were scared to investigate because the liberal left would cry racism.

heads need to roll. We need apply laws equally across the UK. Not that long ago the archbishop of Canterbury said certain area of the UK should be under sharia law! The left are hugely to blame and anyone who questions the actions of these men are still viewed as racist

This is rubbish. Logically and empirically

It's because this is the specific issue people are talking about today.

You didn't have the Epstein prince Andrew threads with cries of but look at x yz.

It's quite glaringly obvious it's a men problem.

But these men are allegedly told by their religion that anyone who isn't Muslim is lesser and inferior.

It seems that within the religion itself, like most, patriarchs and women are inferior
So non Muslim girls are even further down the scale.

How on earth can we tackle that mindset if the allegiance and life rules coupled with a lack of education are ruled by a religion?

Have you ever discussed these concerns with a Muslim person?

Summerhillsquare · 05/01/2025 15:20

Yes, @ezlo, I do.

No, there aren't gang controlled areas in the UK - it's a far right online conspiracy theory. There are poor under resourced areas with crime, crap or underfunded police forces, and aggressive and nasty men all over the country however.

It WAS published, there WAS an enquiry, there WAS a government that did fuck all actual governing however.

I disagree. You obviously haven't lived in the areas referred to in the grooming scandals.

Rape gangs, not "grooming gangs" OP. "Grooming" as the word to describe what these girls went/are going through, is purposefully anodyne. They are rape and torture gangs.

I agree actually - hence the quotes!

I was sexually assaulted as a child. I am white. I was assaulted by a middle aged white man. This was witnessed by my grandmother. She told me never to tell anyone and that he had done it because I looked old for my age and if anyone found out they'd think I was a slut.
Irish Catholic family if that matters..
But I can quite see women depending abusers. Happens all the time.
In all cultures and religions.

Sure. I remember those attitudes. But the families of grooming gang members are in court, harassing and heckling the victims. It is nowhere near comparable.

MermaidEyes · 05/01/2025 10:49

I’m not trying to diminish what happened, but the info is all out there. But if Elon Musk says it isn’t …

Yes, it's been out there for years, but what with his constant retweeting over the last few days....Elon Musk is the worst thing to happen to X. His bizarre obsession with the UK knows no bounds. I still say he has some underlying resentment that he's not British ....

You see it on the Relationships board as well, depressingly often. Posts about how to keep their man happy and stop him threatening to leave whilst he screams and abuses their children. Quite clearly the posters do not even think they have done anything wrong and deny the effect it is having on their children. CBC. Cock Before Child.

Many of these women will end up being the “reasonable face” of a family that is abusive. In fact they are complicit. By the time or if ever their men end up in court (a rare occurrence for child abuse) you can bet that they will support these beasts. They have already done years of mental gymnastics to keep him so it’s not the stretch some might think.

It's not all men, but it is always men. Why can't they just calmly get on with life like women do, not causing harm or being criminals?

Because they think with their dicks every other minute.

Been there as a juror on a case of historic child abuse. Too many women put their relationships with terrible men above what is happening to their children.

This.
I know of a case years ago where a young child told someone in complete innocence something deeply shocking- The child's mother was told, and the child's mother screamed and shouted at the person telling her, almost to the point of slapping the 'messenger', calling the little child a 'liar'.

{Because the person the little child was mentioning was a family relation}

But how would a little child know the physical workings of a male appendage?

Family members often minimise, accuse the victim of lying, which is really surprising.

I have reported this post, because it contains false information.

Leon Brittan was not a "well-known" child abuser, neither was he a member of a paedophile ring.

Allegations were made against him during his lifetime by a (now convicted) liar. He was cleared of all charges after his death.

Well done. It's terrible how much damage a fantasist can do to an innocent person's reputation (and to their family).

Absolute BS. The majority of ordinary women in this country would be absolutely APPALLED if their son or husband did something so heinous as was done to those girls. They would not be in court harassing the victims, as happened in a number of cases. How can you be on a forum where on a daily basis women condemn male bad behaviour in their family without hesitation, then come out with such an egregious untruth?

UneFoisAuChalet · 04/01/2025 22:28

I read the Serious Case Review on the Oxford case probably a decade ago. So to say it wasn’t reported is egregious.

Just because it’s being talked on X right now - probably by people who were too young, weren’t following the news etc - doesn’t mean that people weren’t discussing it back then. I remember a thread on Digital Spy that I posted on where it was discussed extensively.

People are acting like this happened before social media and that there was some type of media blackout but that’s the type of conspiracy shit that get the far right frothing. There are sentencing remarks, SCRs, news articles about these cases that were and are readily available on the internet.

I’m not trying to diminish what happened, but the info is all out there. But if Elon Musk says it isn’t …

No one is saying that some men are not scum. But saying no women cause harm or commit crime is just disingenuous.

I think the reason is that nice middle-class people who were lucky to be born into nice, fortunate families think that most people get where they get to because of their own choices, just like they did.

These girls (so the middle classes think) are just girls who made poor choices, and chose to sell sexual access to their bodies for cigarettes or a mobile phone.

Nice middle-class girls wouldn't do that, they have more self respect.

Some girls apparently like having their anus stretched with a pump so 4 men can penetrate their anus at one time. Choicey choices. Sex work is work. It would be rude to slut shame. Sex positivity. Stop being so narrow minded.

I don't really think so.

For one thing, I think most people realize even older teen girls in situations like this have limited choices, and limited guidance making good choices, through no fault of their own.

But the reason people pictured these scenarios as middle and older teen girls who were being uncooperative with those trying to guide them, and were therefore exploited by bad men, is because that's what the media stories said.

I was middle class. White. Church family.
No outcry. Groomed. Tortured. Abused.
Shamed into silence. Different issues to those in care perhaps but still swept under the rug.

Who shamed you into silence?
Awful and I'm sorry it happened to you.

I know care girls was seen as dirty, cheep, disposable.
And in some respects maybe it and is still is girls/woman being less and men having power.

Even me when I met my now husband some of his family looked down at me as trash.

Yep because if this was happening to the girls of middle class/rich people there would of been a bigger outcry (when it was first known).
I was a a child in care and to know the girls who should of been protected the most were let down by everyone is horrific!

And still to this day they are being let down.
