To be horrified at how much worse the "grooming gangs" actually were than I thought

There are several other threads about Elon Musk, Labour, Jess Phillips, etc.

I don't want to discuss them in this thread. The other threads keep getting derailed and I just want a place to discuss how absolutely horrifying the new details that emerged this week are.

I knew that there were "grooming gangs" who would entice girls in care or from broken homes to be their "boyfriends" by giving them cigarettes and vapes, for example.

I didn't know that girls as young as 11 were being brutally tortured and raped, that people had been killed over it, including one policeman who arranged for some of the rapists to get off, houses burnt down. I didn't know the details of the violent gang rapes which I won't repeat here but you can find on X.

I'm just genuinely shocked and horrified.

Some of the court transcripts circulating are from 2013. How did I not know?

Can you explain then why 80% of the men involved in these gangs just happened to be muslim?

I would say, in fairness, that they are from a country that borders on Afghanistan, so there are cultural elements at play that woudn't be the case with say for instance a Bosnian Muslim community.

I saw a ( harrowing) video about migrants crossing to Europe- some from Afghanistan- and they were mentioning the “Lightly dressed” European women saying it wouldn’t be allowed (in. NWFP and similar regions).
It’s a cultural thing.

There was a pregnant woman on the boat who was not given ANY respect at all.

Imagine being an Afghan woman now under Taliban regime. Awful.

I agree OP and what concerns me is that there’s still not enough of an outcry even with the horrific details coming out. Why isn’t this still splashed all over the news?

I don’t know why people blame ‘the media’

these cases were reported widely at the time. There was a lack of an outcry because people didn’t really care about these young girls because they were seen as scum. They were written off.

I remember seeing a Question time around the time and was horrified that the focus among the audience and panellists was what had gone wrong with young girls that they would give blow jobs for a bag of crisps!

none of the panellists seemed to think it was wrong to blame the girls for going off the rails. One of them was a Daily Mail columnist ( ok, so the media). But as much as it’s a horrible rag, it really knows it audience. They wouldn’t spout such bile if it wasn’t lapped up by the British public.

there was much discussion around the time of the Soham murders too because Ian Huntley had a long history of 13/14 year old girlfriends. At the time, it was admitted that chances to stop a paedo were missed because it was considered normal and these children were ‘slags’

@Bluepiano God I hate posts like yours.
Totally ignoring it is a male problem just because a teeny % of women are involved, and those are usually because of men. Fuck off.

Every time someone says something like this, it makes it harder for people to disclose their abuse at the hands of a woman. It's like you want us to choose between feminism and what happened to us. 😅 I won't choose. I am a feminist. Men are vastly more dangerous than women. My mother, all alone and without male encouragement, did things to me that I was 39 before I was able to talk about with a therapist.

Can you explain then why 80% of the men involved in these gangs just happened to be muslim?

Please can you provide some evidence to back up this assertion?
There are reputable studies showing that most child sexual exploitation is committed by white ( and non-Muslim) people (the majority of whom are men)
eg https://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2020/dec/analysis-new-home-office-report-admits-grooming-gangs-are-not-muslim-problem#:~:text=For%20many%20in%20Britain%20today,offenders%20are%20most%20commonly%20White%E2%80%9D

There are plenty of things you could blame for this situation:
including patriarchy, men's attitudes towards women, child poverty, the hollowing out of social care budgets, the instututional sexism of the police etc.

Analysis: A new Home Office report admits grooming gangs are not a ‘Muslim problem'

The study finds no credible evidence for a far-right stereotype that has spread widely in the media, writes Dr Ella Cockbain (UCL Security & Crime Science) in an article co-authored with Dr Waqas Tufail for The Guardian.

I attached a link earliet to the testimony of a victim who explains the link between Islam and why the victims were targeted. It is harrowing and a difficult watch, I get it. But it might clear things up for you.

Here it is again.

Yes.

I didn't hear about the girl who tried to defend herself with a knife being hit on the head with a baseball bat before being penetrated with it, did you?

Or the use of pumps to stretch girls for anal penetration by more than one man. Or the branding. Or this happening to girls as young as 11 or 12.

I don't recall reading about a woman notifying the police of screaming coming from a house and the police arriving to find two young girls (aged 13) drunk and nearly naked in a house with 7 men and the police arresting one of the girls and locking her in a cell. She was charged.

Where did you read about this at the time?

Quite. None of this was in the reports I read in the media previously. It appears to have just been publicised.

Thousands and thousands of children - usually boys - were abused - which included being brutally anally raped - by Catholic priests around the world and this wa actively covered up by the Church. It’s a huge, global scandal and I can’t believe people don’t know about it.

…and nobody has a problem discussing this and criticising it. It’s been widely discussed both within and outside the church.

The same needs to happen in the british pakistani communities in which these men operate, surely? Sunlight and air, transparency and justice, rooting out these scumbags from within their own communities/families/places of worship.

Was anyone living/working in child protection in West Yorkshire, Wakefield and surrounding areas 20/25 years ago.
It is astounding to me that there hadn’t been any cases reported from that area

Google it. There are many prosecutions for offences committed in the early 2000s around West Yorkshire. Often the trials were much later.

But they were! This is from 2013 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-21445538. Certain extremely explicit/upsetting details are often omitted in court reporting on the grounds that they might traumatise readers and because children may read them. This is normal and applies to all types of distressing details in different types of crimes.

Yes there are rules on how sexual offending is reported. Some of this is to prevent people being identified and some is to stop really perverted people getting off on the details. It can also mean that ongoing investigations or other cases aren’t prejudiced.

I would have had these men imprisoned and if dual nationals, stripped of their British citizenship. We do this for terrorists, Why not these offenders?

The question I keep coming back to is how exactly did Starmer fail.

Our government and society is being trolled by the world's richest man who for his own reasons has a vendetta against the PM.

We, and the rest of Europe, need to understand Musk for what he is and deal with his sh1t appropriately.

Read today's papers to find out why.

We are talking about poor white working class little girls raped by Asian Muslim grooming gangs at the moment. I'm not sure whether we need to discuss on this thread all the other cases of paedophilia. That rather detracts from the victims we are currently discussing.

We are talking about because several people have had the audacity to try and link paedophilia to Islam. As though there's some special link. As though you can't find men using their religion to abuse children within any religion.

Birdscratch · 04/01/2025 15:17

I would be very, very keen on some kind of Romeo and Juliet law in the U.K.

At the moment, though the age of consent is 16, the police and CPS aren’t interested in taking any action against the older partner of an under 16 if the under 16 says the sex was consensual. Romeo and Juliet laws basically say that action will be taken if the age gap is too big, regardless of consent.

No one is interested in teenagers being criminalised for having sex with other teenagers but the way the law is enforced at the moment, no action will be taken against a 25 year old having sex with a 15 year old. I think 21 would be a reasonable limit. It would automatically shift the way the police and CPS would look at situations where it’s reported that a child under 16 is involved with an adult. It would mean that action could be taken against the adult without cooperation from the child.

It doesn’t astound me as it’s mumsnet which seems to have either a number of hard left, or a few shouty hard left characters, and their way of shutting down anyone’s reasonable concerns is to call them far right or racist. It’s meaningless and should be ignored.

i always think mumsnet is more right of centre. With associated biases

These particular gangs. Because that area has a high Muslim population. Look at the statistics for child sexual abuse across the UK as a whole. There's no bias towards Muslim men.
There's a bias towards men in general.
But if you were to experience sexual abuse in the UK it's statistically more likely to be from a white man unless you are in a certain area that has less white men.
Which is bloody obvious isn't it?

All of this and an appropriate and robust response also denies the far right the opportunity to weaponise the issue for their own ends.

Absolutely - full transparency and a robust response to the minority of men of this specific demographic who are actually at the root of the problem would prevent far right misinformation and reduce general anti-muslim/anti-‘brown person’ sentiment. The anger and blame would be directed squarely at the perpetrators.

Tracystubbs · 04/01/2025 14:50

It's still going on

My ds works at the hospital of my home town

He never, ever tells me anything to do with the patients of his job (normally)

But,one night he rang me
'Mum,to you know of a girl called xy?'
Me-'no,but I know of a girl called xz'
Him-'thats her'

He went on to tell me that she (at the time about 2/3 years ago) was about 14/15 and had been put into care because her mum had died

The endless string of 'new dads' didn't want to know her,her geandparents where dead, her siblings had all grown up in care themselves and where in no fit state to look after her,so off to a care home she went

She had a 'boyfriend' aged 35-40 and she'd ended up in hospital as he'd battered her so badly, she was in intensive care

She'd been 'paid' with drugs, booze and vapes-her insides where a mess-she'll never have kids herself

Ds had to sling out the 'boyfriend' who was hanging around to make sure she didn't talk once she woke up (if she woke up-she was very ill but thankfully survived)

He came back the following day-he wasn't there out of love for her

I told ds to phone the police and I'd phone ss
I wish I was joking when I say that all we got back was

'Silly girl, she made those lifestyle choices'
'What do you want us to do about this?'
'She's old enough to make her own choices'
'Dating him is her choice'
'If she gets pregnant,we can force her to abort'
'Silly girl'
'We can't monitor who she dates'

Not one person was bothered, nobody thought this was odd, she'd made her choice to sleep with him and they couldn't do anything

The care home where even worse-they where paying him (taxi driver-he made them pay real cash to drive her off to abuse her)/allowing her to go off with him to God knows where

They made no attempt to stop her or even ask why a 35-40 year old bloke was 'dating' a 14/15 year old girl

She got too old for him (she dared to get to 16 and was beaten as a dumping present) and he dumped her-him and the others are still out there-the police know who he and his mares are,but don't give a fuck

That's just one girl, living in a lovely city that many people will have visited and had a lovely time there

Everyone needs to sit up and do something-one girl is one too many but these bastards know they can do anything they like and get away with it

This is very similar to what the foster family I knew said.
Police just didn’t want to know.

The foster family used to take “ Hard to place” teens mainly, but girls who had been targeted like this were a nightmare to keep safe as they were so damaged before arriving at the foster home.
Goodness knows what the answer is.

( Not Rotherham, but a major city)

What’s worrying is that there are 14% at the time of me posting this that think the OP is being unreasonable.

I had to stop reading some things I saw published as felt sick. Those poor vulnerable girls getting tortured. To think that people turned a blind eye is horrific whether they are family or people in positions of responsibility. There need to be a full enquiry into this, who the perpetrators are, what their background is. People need prosecuting for turning a blind eye.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 04/01/2025 15:13

@Anonym00se - you need to check your source re: Leon Brittan. You do know this was made up by Carl Beech? Who was jailed for wasting vast amounts of police time and public money.

That is the trouble with covering things up. No one knows the truth so innocent people will be hurt. Labour need to allow a national enquiry even if it leads to Keir having to take responsibility for his failures and resign.

Of course it can happen to any child.
But children living in care are vastly more at risk.
This is like bringing up domestic violence against men when talking about domestic violence against women!
Of course it's still an issue that needs addressing.. but there's a massive massive problem regarding sexual abuse of children in care. It's clearly a factor that needs addressing. They are deliberately targeted

And again, I am not disputing what you are saying. I am simply pointing out that in the 3 cases I am talking about none of the girls were in the care system at the start of the abuse and all 3 were from 'normal' and loving homes.
And please don't insult me by likening me to someone who brings up 'what about the men' when speaking about female victims of domestic abuse. As someone who suffered years of severe domestic abuse it's incredibly insulting and competently unnecessary. Thanks.
