To think this is strange from my neighbour?

This morning I woke up to a pack of Christmas cards that have been posted through my door. They are new Christmas cards, still sealed within their pack, unused. A note came with it saying “hi, it’s Janet from number 5. I bought these for you to send out to the neighbours next year”

Huh? Why would anyone do that? She’s isn’t my direct neighbour, she’s like 4 houses down. We don’t speak or have any kind of relationship. However, since we moved in a few years ago she has always sent us a Christmas card, and I assume she sends them to everyone on the street. We don’t bother with Christmas cards and never send them out. Could it be that she’s offended that we never send cards so this is her not so subtle way of hinting that she will be expecting a card from us in 2025?? Why would anyone care so much?

Im planning on just throwing the cards away and ignoring it. Would anyone else find this weird?

“Thank you ever so much for the box of Christmas cards. How thoughtful of you to assume I’ve been in desperate need of them all this time! Unfortunately, I don’t send Christmas cards—call it a radical rebellion against festive bureaucracy.

I wouldn’t want these cards to go to waste, though, so I’m returning them to you. Perhaps you can add them to your undoubtedly impressive collection of passive-aggressive gestures.”

I’d sign them all, Dear Janet, Merry Christmas 2025, the next 2026, 2027. etc.
Little note saying this should see you through until 2040 ( or whatever date they finish on) see you then!

Actually - that is genius.

Write all of them to her, then on the front of the envelope write "to be opened on 25/12/25, 26, 27", etc!

She wanted a card from you - there you go!

It’s not style, it’s rude and passive aggressive. If others want to indulge in the stupidity of running round the neighbourhood posting cards then fine. Doesn’t mean you have to reciprocate.

Quite and if she doesn’t send cards, she shouldn’t have to buy a pack just to satisfy arsey neighbour!

Karatema · 02/01/2025 16:51

Blooming cheek!
I'd definitely return them to her explaining you don't send cards, as per PP, due to environmental impact but as she's bought them you've returned them.

YarkYark · 02/01/2025 16:48

Suggest you write into each of them "Merry Christmas 2001!", "Merry Christmas 2002!" etc... and stick them all through her letter box in one go!

I imagine her sat at home every year seething, saying "That bloody woman still hasn't sent me a Christmas card back, I can't stand it any more!!!" Batshit.

I like her style! Has it never occurred to you to send her one back, in the years she's been giving them to you? Good manners surely.

Has it never occurred to her not to s3nd them to someone who doesn’t send out cards? Good manners, surely?
I don’t do cards. Nobody will be guilting me into it, thank you. I have good reasons not to and I don’t expect people to send them to me.

Post them back to her saying "I've decided to give Christmas cards to my neighbours and I'm starting with you!"

"We're good for the next decade then, eight?"

Probably bought a load of packs on sale and posted through a few doors.

This was my first thought. She's trying to be nice.

I send cards and donate to charity but I don't tell people about the donations or which charities I support (other than that I'm doing so now!) Sometimes they are charity cards, sometimes not. As charities only get a fraction of the value of each card there are better ways than buying charity cards to donate to them. Judge the fuck out of that to your hearts content, I don't care.

Exactly@SharpOpalNewt
A lot of people buying charity cards like the poster above, are clueless as to how much actually goes to the charity. And how does that ignorant poster "judge the f" know how much the person sending a none charity card gives to charity, compared to what they're donating through the charity cards they're feeling morally superior about. 🤔

Funkyslippers · 02/01/2025 16:17

Post them back to her saying "I've decided to give Christmas cards to my neighbours and I'm starting with you!"

Wheretostart25 · 02/01/2025 16:17

Put them back through her door with a note that says 'we don't post Christmas cards regards xyz'.

It's really as simple as that. Don't keep them, bin them or donate them. Return them with a clear but short message on why.

Just send the woman a card next year. She really really wants one.

I'd be very tempted to put them back through her letterbox with a note saying that you don't send cards to anyone, so will not need them to send to neighbours.

Please open them, take one out, write this inside of one. Seal it in envelope. Put it back through her door with the other unused cards.

PeppyGreenFinch · 02/01/2025 16:13

Rosscameasdoody · 02/01/2025 15:31

No, the comment is factual. They are cheap cards from a charity shop - thus confirming that the neighbour hasn’t spent a lot of money on them. Don’t see a problem.

I find charity shops cards overpriced.

flippertygibbet4 · 02/01/2025 16:12

This is such weird behaviour!! I send cards to friends, and to neighbours I'm friends with. Most don't send cards back, but I know they won't and I don't mind. I enjoy writing cards and I don't do it to get more cards in return. I'd just give the box to a charity shop and ignore your neighbour. I think what she did was extremely rude tbh.

SharpOpalNewt · 02/01/2025 16:11

NetZeroZealot · 02/01/2025 15:44

Agreed. I judge people who choose to send cards that do NOT support a charity.

I'm a wimp and send cards to neighbours who send me a card. Two of them are horrible and were really nasty when we moved in, DH thinks it is due to his colour as they have been nice as pie to two all white families who moved in after us.

I wish I had your backbone, maybe I will try it next year.

Hell would freeze over before I would send cards to racists.

WillimNot · 02/01/2025 16:08

That's possibly the most passive/aggressive behaviour I've seen on here.

I'd be tempted to send them back with a note saying for religious reasons you do not celebrate Christmas and this you are offended by her behaviour. See how the old crow likes that.

This.

I do send lots of cards but the neighbour is ridiculous.

I hope that judgments spreads towards other things too then, do you buy everything you own from shops that support charitys?

I hope with that judgement you arnt buying brand new clothes, pots pans ect, towels ect and are getting everything from shops that support charities

I do have an ethical shopping policy, yes.
Not all charities but BCorps, 2nd hand where possible, sustainable, avoid from oppressive regimes, local etc.
No idea why people get touchy about cards though!

Flatulence · 02/01/2025 16:01

Knock on, smile, say thank you for the kind gesture, give them back, say you don't send cards as it's against your beliefs (she presumably doesn't have a clue whether you're Christian, a Jehovah's Witness, an Atheist, Jewish, Muslim etc.).

LogicVoid · 02/01/2025 16:01

Stick them back through her door with a note on - 'not required'.
Job done! No excuse, explanation, or enquiry about her odd behaviour.
