To think this is strange from my neighbour?

This morning I woke up to a pack of Christmas cards that have been posted through my door. They are new Christmas cards, still sealed within their pack, unused. A note came with it saying “hi, it’s Janet from number 5. I bought these for you to send out to the neighbours next year”

Huh? Why would anyone do that? She’s isn’t my direct neighbour, she’s like 4 houses down. We don’t speak or have any kind of relationship. However, since we moved in a few years ago she has always sent us a Christmas card, and I assume she sends them to everyone on the street. We don’t bother with Christmas cards and never send them out. Could it be that she’s offended that we never send cards so this is her not so subtle way of hinting that she will be expecting a card from us in 2025?? Why would anyone care so much?

Im planning on just throwing the cards away and ignoring it. Would anyone else find this weird?

Do you have a street WhatsApp group? If so, post there that you have some spare Xmas cards that are free if anyone wants them 😀

OhcantthInkofaname · 03/01/2025 19:49

I'd be very passive aggressive and send every single 1 of them to her.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 03/01/2025 19:41

Write them all to her but mark them with different years

Infact. Ignore me. This is much better. Send her them all back just like this. Brilliant 🤣🤣

Heyheyitsanotherday · 03/01/2025 19:42

Wowsers. That’s so passive aggressive and weird. After reading all you replies and her behaviour about not taking parcels for neighbours i would totally out shame her. Post them back through saying you don’t do Christmas cards and not everyone celebrates Christmas (you’re not lying that you don’t celebrate Christmas but might make her realise she’s being a dick). She sounds a strange bugger. Aren’t some people odd. I wouldn’t even notice if I didn’t recieve a card from a neighbour 🤣. Don’t press her ring doorbell though op. Either knock on the door and tip her over the edge or just post them 🤣🤣🤣

Judecb · 03/01/2025 19:37

Return them, and tell her you care about the environment so have stopped sending them.

TwinklySquid · 03/01/2025 19:33

I’d send them back to her with a note:
”Hi x,
Thank you for thinking of me. I don’t send out cards for environmental reasons so I wont use them. All the best”.

Whyherewego · 03/01/2025 19:32

Pekitothebunny · 02/01/2025 10:48

Oh yes good point, I will donate them. It is a shame to waste them. Or I might see if someone else that I know wants them. Of course I could just use them next Christmas and send them out… but I don’t want to

I'd return them not donate or throw. Just pop them back through her letter box and no note

Shabzzz · 03/01/2025 19:31

Post them back through her door with a note saying...thanks but not needed as we don't celebrate. I'd be tempted to add " wow you got them for such a good deal I'm New years sales! Well done!"

So shes one of those people who only sends cards so that she will receive one back and she can display them all and feel popular.
She’s as shallow as she is unchristian.
Stick then in your charity bag.

I suppose that it's possible that she's a bit lonely if she's elderly and has no immediate family alive?

MaddestGranny · 03/01/2025 19:25

Perhaps drop a note through her letterbox saying something like:
"Thank you. That was sweet of you to pop a packet of Christmas cards through my door. Actually, we don't ever send anyone any Christmas cards. Never have.
We usually make a donation to a charity instead. But, thank you for your kind thought. I will be donating your pack of cards to a charity next year, so they won't go to waste."

Serp12 · 03/01/2025 19:25

I would be furious! And take them straight back to her and tell her she’s a fucking dick!

Whatinthedoopla · 03/01/2025 19:12

Nosy fucking neighbour, if she doesn't like the fact you don't send her Christmas cards, she should stop sending them to you.....

Passive aggressive bitch

oldmoaner · 03/01/2025 18:52

Maybe she thinks you can't afford to buy cards, or don't celebrate Christmas due to religion. I'd pop them back through her letterbox with a note saying thank you but i dont send Christmas cards so you may make better use of them yourself.

Sortumn · 03/01/2025 18:41

I would keep them just for her and send her one each Christmas until they run out.

The point is that if the people who send you cards are the type that anticipate or even expect one back, publicising that you are not sending cards to anyone because XYZ immediately eliminates that assumption on their side and gives them the choice of whether they want to send one with the knowledge they will not receive one.

The point is if you donate to charity you don't have to broadcast it....even to the batty old woman down the road.

rosyAndMoo · 03/01/2025 18:31

Post them back with a note saying “thanks, but I don’t send cards. I would rather the not add to the environmental impact of a tradition. Feel feee to wish me seasons greetings if you see me in the street and you too can reduce your environmental impact by one card.”

if you do a charity donation instead of cards as some people do, stick that at the end of the note!

all my family and friends know if would cost me about £30 in cards and stamps to send all of the Christmas cards, so instead I donate that money to a local hospice. Everyone wins then. I think cards are going out of style anyway. We received 6 this year…. 20 years ago we would have got about 50!

NovemberMorn · 02/01/2025 17:10

I agree.
I always think it a bit iffy when people have to announce they are giving to charity instead of ...whatever.

Just give, no one else needs to know.

I'd be very tempted to put them back through her letterbox with a note saying that you don't send cards to anyone, so will not need them to send to neighbours.

Agree. Also what if you didn’t celebrate Christmas?

A district councillor makes this announcement every year, claims they have donated to charity instead of cards. Always a generous donation too. One year he made the mistake of declaring he has donated £500 to the a school within the districts PTA. Except he hadn’t, the Treasurer went on his post to ask him to check where he had sent the money as none had been received. It was months before they got the money, and it was strongly suspected that he hadn’t given any money at all to any of the charities he declared he had. Makes me wonder if there are some people claiming they donate but actually don’t.

Probably, they want the kudos more than they want to help....pathetic.

That is hilarious!! Wow, this woman really has more time on her hands than she knows what to do with it. I’d post them back, saying she can use them as you don’t send anyone cards, especially passive aggressive people

Unrelated38 · 03/01/2025 12:03

I actually love her for it. I'd give just her one every year

That is honestly mad she doesn't even know your name but expects a card 😂

Maybe it's the only way she can think of to find out OP's name 🤪
