Friends awful baby name

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

I can’t say the name just in case she sees it, it’s too obvious. I’m sorry! Hate being that person! It’s just outrageously bad.

Tell her. I never usually say anything if an actual baby is introduced with an awful name as it is their name. I did tell a cousin once her name she had in mind was awful and you couldn't lumber a kid with that. She said her DH liked it too. He looked sheepish and said actually I have gone off it. I wonder if others had said the same to him. Anyway when their daughter was born she was introduced to us with a beautiful name and she didn't have to bear the one that had been in the running.

We're just going to have to guess then, aren't we.

Grayvie?

Names have gotten crazy - had to keep a straight face on hearing one that sounds almost exactly like “Alien”

maudelovesharold · 01/01/2025 16:34

Is it a ‘made-up’ name?

Well I think the risk is, if you say anything, the more she’ll dig her heels in about going with it!
However YABU not to tell us the name!

You have to share the name with us I'm afraid.

Quite. Come on OP, do the decent thing.

takealettermsjones · 01/01/2025 16:28

If there's a concrete reason I'd tell her (e.g. "did you know that means penis in X language?") but otherwise I think I wouldn't to be honest, unless you're very close.

Bluevelvetsofa · 01/01/2025 16:28

Unless you share the name, it’s not possible to comment on whether it’s awful and whether you should speak to her about it. I can see that you might not want to though.

No, you can’t! But you can emphasise how nice lots of the others are, in hope!
