Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

My friend said she was calling her daughter Kitten, I said that the poor child would have the mickey taken out of her at school and would say things like "Here Kitty Kitty", so she fell out with me big time and hasn't spoken to me for 25 years.

Kira22 · 04/01/2025 23:03

Why can’t you just say it? Highly unlikely your friend will see this or go through all the thread?

if it were my friend and there were other names I liked in her list I’d say I like ..insert name here, and …insert name here but not such a fan of .. insert name here…. Then leave the ball in her court.

I agree with what a lot of peeps have said that you may think it is an awful name and blah blah but maybe it isn’t so bad and maybe the kid will be fine and not be ridiculed at all … wish you could say the name!

Jones3A · 04/01/2025 22:19

I reckon it could be Chastity

LBA40 · 04/01/2025 19:56

UndertheseaPineappleHouse · 01/01/2025 19:18

Chastity? Purification? Immaculata?

I think you’ve nailed it with your first suggestion. I would be quite blunt with a close friend if they were thinking of giving that name to their daughter.

Bluestockings1 · 04/01/2025 19:37

I know someone who called her baby Chlamydia because she thought it sounded nice.

InterestedDad37 · 04/01/2025 19:27

Vajayjay? 🤔

Oh, yes - all the car model names that don't work in every country!

Also, Carens (Kia) means lacking or careless, in Latin; and Pajero (Mitsubishi) means idiot, boorish person or w*nker in Spanish!

My sister had a Pajero many years ago which she adored - if only she’d known!

This has taken me back - this was the fake name I used online back in the early days of using chat rooms and such!

What a lucky coincidence 😀

TheBluntTurtle · 04/01/2025 18:55

is it Renesmee? One for the twilight fans there 😂

MillyHilly99 · 04/01/2025 18:49

I feel like a real friend would say something surely? "I love all those names but x" and explain why.

HugoYorway · 04/01/2025 18:25

@adamduritzvocalchords , what sold it to me is that it offers so many nn options. Bea-Jay is so cute dontcha think.
The only thing I kinda regret is not taking into account how long it takes to spell it out, but kids today won't be having to do that will they.

@HugoYorway you have named one of my children's names!!!!! Happy for people to call children none traditional names but feel sooty for the little darlings when they have to say their name on the phone in the future then have to spell it all out because of the unique spelling. I love your daughters name though. You have sold me on it and I will ask her to put it back in her list!!

Poor Sooty!!!

My two children Soo and Sweep would be heartbroken if I told them, you monster!

I have a family member who is currently pregnant. She is younger and has been suggesting some weird names. I have used 'are you pranking me' several times. I also said I would refuse to use several! We are close so she has taken the critiques well. She is still young so thinks the unique spellings are great. She suggested Blakeley spelt Blaykeleigh. I told her that was not acceptable!

You're just one of those old-fashioned MNers who think that all girls should be called Olivia or Charlotte aren't you.

My DD (5) is called Blaykeleigh-Jaighmz and we've had nothing but compliments. Wink

Then I stand corrected. Thanks for info.

And THAT, Mums, is how you avoid a flame war. 👏🏽

Eternity

Has anyone guessed the correct ‘name’ on the thread OP?

DeftSwan · 04/01/2025 17:46

Is it Honor? I was surprised when a friend named her daughter that but it's a very posh old money name and not at all awful.

FizzyBisto · 04/01/2025 16:38

SpanThatWorld · 04/01/2025 16:20

It's like the Irish name Áine.

I hadn't actually thought of that. It is actually a nice name - as long as your surname isn't Doorstep, Bike, Uppers or similar!

SpanThatWorld · 04/01/2025 16:20

HugoYorway · 04/01/2025 16:13

@FizzyBisto , but Onya doesn't sound like honour.

It wasn't a serious suggestion!
