Friends awful baby name

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

I am guessing the name is Chastity, in which case I would tell her it’s opening the girl up for a lot of teasing. She might be prepared to face that down like “a boy called Sue”, the song by Johnny cash, it might make someone mentally strong to handle that much teasing but would her child choose it herself?

If it really is that awful, I would tell her. It’s not like you’re saying you hate her actual baby, just one of a few possible names. She might thank you later on. If you’re very close, I doubt she’d let your views on a name ruin the friendship. I wouldn’t

My mother was an Alice, as was her mother. My sister gave her daughter Alice as a middle name, to much maternal delight, without mentioning that it was done to please her husband's very ancient granny. There used to be a lot of them about!

I have an Alice DD.

Always thought she might switch to a cooler sounding Ali but not so far, although she has had friends who shortened it.

Not named for anyone although later found out my Irish granny had a sister Alice.

Although my mother died a couple of years before she was born I could still hear her voice i. My head "oh ah do 'ate fancy made oop names". So trad it had to be.

One of my friends got quite wild with the name ideas when she was pregnant and had a list of potential names I can’t remember them all (there were a lot !) but I remember some! (She won’t mind as we laugh about it now)
Amberleigh-maison
Juneberry-fleur
Prairie-rose
Wynter-faerie
Roseabella-mae

When she had her baby she called her Emily !

Teresa Palmer got in before her on the Prairie front. Just googled and she called her daughter Prairie Moon. The other kid is called Poet Lake. (tragic that I know that).

I read a (totally ace) series of books where the main character is called Integrity, Tegs for short, and I thought it made a cool name. For a character in a book.

<misses point of thread>

Effluence?
Balderdashina?

Viviennemary · 01/01/2025 21:07

Nobody can judge unless you say what the name is. Bit silly.

ToWhitToWhoo · 01/01/2025 21:06

Reality? As in former NSA translator Reality Winner. She lived up to her name, ending up in prison for illegal whistleblowing about Russian interference, There was a film about her

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

Prosperity?
Blessing?
Admire?

That would be daft but not toe-curlingly terrible.

ChippedIkeaFurniture · 01/01/2025 20:57

The name is Integrity.

Normallynumb · 01/01/2025 20:57

Truly?
As your friend has listed other options, then the easiest thing to do is say the other choices sound better with her surname
It doesn't matter what the actual name is, as I'm sure you realised before you started your thread

I heard of a family who called their daughter that once. Had a brother with an equally unusual name beginning with B.....?

Does have a brother with a very unusual name -but begins with C.

FairFuming · 01/01/2025 20:55

It's not power or something ridiculous?

chaosmaker · 01/01/2025 20:55

@ThisIcyHare why can't you say anything? I don't get it. Aren't friends supposed to be honest with each other? Especially 'super special' ones....

SpringIscomingalso · 01/01/2025 20:54

Or actually: Fidelity

Butchyrestingface · 01/01/2025 20:54

SpringIscomingalso · 01/01/2025 20:53

Could be FECUNDITY.

I know someone who named their child Calamity. I did wonder if they knew what the word meant when they chose it.

totalnamechanger · 01/01/2025 20:53

Authenticity?

SpringIscomingalso · 01/01/2025 20:50

I have met only two women here with these names: is it Fanny or Gaye
