Friends awful baby name

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

I once know a couple who joined their names together for their son. Its vile! BlaySan 🤮

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

I know a child called Honor, she’s fine. No one bats an eye.

Atomickitten · 01/01/2025 22:41

Probity? Id just let them get on with it. Suggest they choose a couple middle names so child can change it when older.

ACynicalDad · 01/01/2025 22:41

Any chance she is playing a game with you and has no intention of using it but wondering if you'll bite?

Serenity?

Heavenleigh? Which I’ve just seen elsewhere! Only as a forum username, though.

You got to literally be honest with her like you're saying here. Literally say to her what you've said here!

You have to say something. I have two acquaintances who have, independently, each named a child after relatively obscure figures from Ancient Greek mythology. Neither kid is ever called by their actual name, because they are so odd. So what was the point? "Oooh look at me, I've read some Hesiod and a bit of Homer..." basically. One name is so bad that if I saw it on a CV, and I'd assume someone was having a joke and bin it.

Lubilu02 · 01/01/2025 22:17

I'd guess Chastity, and I could see what you mean if it was that.

Makes me think of some kind of belt... 😬

@OptimisticRealist2024 , the Welsh name is Euryn. It's a nice name and is not pronounced Ew-rin.

@HugoYorway I know - I read it that way first as I'm a Welsh-speaker. 😊 Although it reminds me of eirin flewog, so I'd avoid for a different reason...!

I can’t say the name just in case she sees it, it’s too obvious. I’m sorry! Hate being that person! It’s just outrageously bad.

If it’s really that bad I would gently say ‘you know I’m really not keen on Cherry-Anne, it reminds me of xxx’ and give some sort of example. Then you know you did at least try to avoid potential disaster.
I know a girl with a name she hates and she was angry at her parents for many years.

You could point out the attractiveness of the more likable names and suggest that a few are better as second names.
Oh, yes XXuglynameXX would be a great second or third name to XXgorgeousnameXX.

Edited

Liking the list but let’s change Probitie to Analprobiteigh and include Gertrude in Rectitude to make Gerectitudeigh.
