To hate New Year's Eve

Butteredtoast55 · 31/12/2024 19:46

Just that really. Over the years I've tried to enjoy it in all forms from full on partying to having close friends round; snuggling in front of the TV to going to bed early; going to see a film to having a bubbly bath and all points in between.
I just find it so pointless and feel honour bound to 'see in' the new year with DH and DC who are all here at home. It doesn't exactly feel depressing but the forcedness and expectation wear me out.

I'm dreading 2025 and I don't know why.

Anxiety.
I agree, it's crap.

I hate new years eve, a new year doesn't wipe away the shit that the previous year decided to throw at you. Celebrating out with the old in with the new seems pointless when the problems will still be there tomorrow.

Then when you try and go to bed at a normal time someone sets off fireworks which wakes you up and scares the cats half to death.

MandSCrisps · 31/12/2024 20:51

I can’t even think of one great new year. I can remember walking around pubs bored, or freezing in some city centre or going to a couple of crap parties which never seem to get going I suspect as everyone is always clock watching.
I miss DD being a baby and using it as an excuse to slope off to bed.

DH is Scottish though and spent decades trying to make it a thing and then being disappointed before admitting a few years ago that it’s crap. His family are obsessed with it though. They had big family parties in the 70s/80s when his gran was alive. His brother has tried having them but it’s grief now with taxis and everyone leaves early so they can get home and then he ends up annoyed.

Flidina · 31/12/2024 20:51

I had to endure NYE when I was younger, always had parties, these days I no longer feel like I have to celebrate , and quite happily go to bed and sleep through it.Dont miss all the noise ,mess , cleanup or hangover.

Comedycook · 31/12/2024 20:49

I hate it... enforced jollity...eugh

Caravaggiouch · 31/12/2024 20:48

New Year’s Eve makes me feel really maudlin. I don’t know anyone who ever actually has a good time.

There is NOTHING that makes me more tired than NYE. As soon as I know I HAVE to stay up till midnight I want to go to bed - about 4pm. Of course I don't have to stay up but then by default I'll end up up until about 10.30 and then it seems silly to 'miss' it by 1.5 hours so put myself through torture to reach some poxy fireworks.

Me too! And I’m normally a night owl!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/12/2024 20:46

I’ve never liked it! Sometimes I’ve had NYEs that I enjoy, but I don’t like it as a holiday itself.

Its just weird - the staying up til midnight just to wait for it to chime and then as soon as you’ve reached the bit you’re waiting for, everyone’s off to bed.

Just a weird one

MauveVelcro · 31/12/2024 20:40

I absolutely love it.

We don't make a huge deal of it or anything, just an easy picky buffet, a few drinks, couple of family members coming over. I regularly stay awake until midnight so it's no hardship staying up late.

But to me, it's lovely feeling. A fresh start. A new year. It feels like the first milestone in Spring approaching and lighter evenings, warmer days, things growing, baby animals.

Yes I know we're still a way away from Spring 😂 but that's how it feels.

My 10 year old wanted to see in the new year for the first this year, and like a fool, I thought (last week), it'd be lovely for us all to go to the town centre to see it in with others. I am currently with migraine and heavy period, deeply regretting suggesting this, but I can't let DD down 😫. It's also blowing a gale and 2 degrees above freezing. Happy New year Mumsnetters! 🎉🎉

I really feel for you but your Daughter will love it 😊

Yes this is truth!

OliveLeader · 31/12/2024 20:34

I’m totally unfussed about it as a holiday. I’m usually in bed and happily asleep well before midnight! I like New Year’s Day though, it always feels fresh and calm.

popduckhe · 31/12/2024 20:33

I'm indifferent about it. Don't feel pressured to do anything and I'm not! 😂 how things change!

strugglingwithlife · 31/12/2024 20:32

I hate NYE. I don't stay up till midnight. Over rated crap. It's just another day, the start of another month like any other except Jan is the worst and most depressing month of the year

Butteredtoast55 · 31/12/2024 20:29

The thing is, whatever I do feels weird. I can't settle to an early night or chilling out, I definitely don't want to go out ...if I go to sleep I'll get woken up by DC. As @himyf says, it seems neverending.
I'm currently making sausage rolls for tomorrow and then it'll be time for a bath and it'll still only be about 9:30!

I hate NYE. I put the toddler to bed the latest I reasonably can (around 9pm) and then get bullied into staying up until silly-o-clock (usually at least 1pm). Everyone else sleeps until midday and I'm awake with a hangover with the toddler by 8am latest.

Odiebay · 31/12/2024 20:18

PIL have dropped in last minute to stay. I love them but only saw them 3 days ago. Was looking forward to a quiet night. A lovely steak dinner now talking politics 💤
Counting the minutes until 12 so I can go to bed!

QuotetheRaven · 31/12/2024 20:17

I don't like going out but I do reflect on the year, achievements vs personal goals, new goals for the coming year, a general health (physical, mental, financial) check. A film and time with the Mrs.... you don't need to "do" anything - but reflection is always worthwhile

himyf · 31/12/2024 20:13

I can never understand how New Years Eve feels so bloody long?!! I stay up until midnight most nights but on NYE it feels interminable. I don’t like it either, such a weird evening that all feels forced.

I'm planning on going to bed soon - with my son ( he is 6). We will get into bed, read Harry Potter and snuggle and sleep. I used to get absolutely wasted every NYE - I would usually go to bed at some point on the 2nd! Utterly relieved to be older ( and sober) and happier.

Thornybush · 31/12/2024 20:04

I love nye even though I'm alone with dc every year as dh works in hospitality. I am putting dc to bed now so will have a nap myself for an hour and then back up, watch tv for a bit and get ready to watch the fireworks outside 🎆

Cup of tea and bed with some books for me!

Add some chocolate and you pretty much have perfection right there!

JMSA · 31/12/2024 20:01

I'm with you, OP. I'm quite a cheery soul on the whole and I absolutely love Christmas. But Hogmanay and New Year leave me cold. It's depressing and I can't stand it. Maybe because the return to work is round the corner, who knows.
