To hate New Year's Eve

Butteredtoast55 · 31/12/2024 19:46

Just that really. Over the years I've tried to enjoy it in all forms from full on partying to having close friends round; snuggling in front of the TV to going to bed early; going to see a film to having a bubbly bath and all points in between.
I just find it so pointless and feel honour bound to 'see in' the new year with DH and DC who are all here at home. It doesn't exactly feel depressing but the forcedness and expectation wear me out.

There is NOTHING that makes me more tired than NYE. As soon as I know I HAVE to stay up till midnight I want to go to bed - about 4pm. Of course I don't have to stay up but then by default I'll end up up until about 10.30 and then it seems silly to 'miss' it by 1.5 hours so put myself through torture to reach some poxy fireworks.

If you had a nice nap at 4pm you'd be fine for midnight 😂

icecreamscoops · 31/12/2024 23:09

My poor cat has been screeching round the house and is now hiding out petrified from the ridiculously loud bangs outside the house
I don't like nye!

RainbowColouredRainbows · 31/12/2024 23:07

The new year is what you make of it and whether you put pressure on yourself to enjoy it like on the TV. I used to force myself to go out every year and hated it. Tonight me and dd ordered a Chinese, I had a glass of gin, we watched a film, player hide and seek and then went to bed. I am in my happy place. If I stay up till midnight or fall asleep before has little bearing on my life on the whole so I don't pressure myself either way. Currently dd is asleep and I'm in bed watching tv. I'll see the new year at some point, whether it is in 1 hour or 8 if I fall asleep before.

I hate NYE. I put the toddler to bed the latest I reasonably can (around 9pm) and then get bullied into staying up until silly-o-clock (usually at least 1pm). Everyone else sleeps until midday and I'm awake with a hangover with the toddler by 8am latest.

And they get woken up by neighbours having stupidly loud fireworks anyway.

I poisoned myself with 5 Toffifee so I'm in bed farting (lactose intolerance) and I suspect, annoying the cat. Happy new year and all that ...

Oh dear! Well you can blame the fireworks I guess! 😂

I only hate it because of Jools Cunting Holland

greengreyblue · 31/12/2024 22:53

I just wish the fireworks weren’t so loud and crazy. I’m in bed now about to watch a show and they’ve already started the booming. I’ll drop off and it will wake me up after midnight so you can’t really escape. Just glad I’m in the warm .

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 31/12/2024 22:51

I'm an AA member. We call NYE "Amateur Night" - it's when all the normal social drinkers go out and act like alcoholics.

PheasantPluckers · 31/12/2024 22:42

I like to see in the new year, but I won't leave the house unless it's dinner/drinks with family or friend's at someone's house or a house party. I dread to think how much money I wasted in the past on tickets to events, the inflated cots of drinks at said events and taxis home, for what is always a disappointing night! I also don't really feel like getting glammed up after a week of feasting.

I get what PPs mean about forced fun and the expectation levels, but I don't get that now I stick to lower key things. It's not my favourite holiday, but it's nice to take some time for self reflection and think about goals.

We've had parties in the past that have been OK, good even. But yeah, I'm not a fan, there is too much expectation, and even when you are doing absolutely nothing, there is still something about it. I don't like Christmas either. Absolutely love from March to October when you can do things as you please, lighter nights, warmer weather, hope in the air. You sort of just have to soldier on through it if you are not keen, and I agree once it is over, then it things do get back on more of an even keel.

Totally agree about loving March-October. I totally go into hibernate mode November-February!

TotemPolly · 31/12/2024 22:38

I'm laid in bed , will probably be asleep or dozing by midnight . I've done this for at least the last 5 years and don't feel fomo .

sloecat · 31/12/2024 22:35

I’ve never been a fan. It’s an interminable evening, I always get drunk too early and lose the will to live about 10pm.

Perhaps think yourself lucky that you’re with your family at least. I’m on my own as my kids are away with the their dad, my other half is with his kids and friends are away or have their own plans with family. Now that is pretty miserable!

You need to have a ‘meevning’

greengreyblue · 31/12/2024 22:30

Always found it makes me a bit sad, even as a child . We had family parties as a child and went out in my youth but was mostly a disappointment. Stayi g in tonight listening to the mad weather and glad I’m home. Just worried for my two adult DDs out partying.

I don’t hate it, but really CBA to do anything. Dh has just offered to make me a drink, but I’m not sure I’m going to be able resist my bed* for much longer.
*Bed with cup of tea and Kindle, electric blanket on, bliss!

Topseyt123 · 31/12/2024 21:52

Agreed. I really hate New Year. It will all be over by this time tomorrow and I can't wait.

DontshootmyRaptors · 31/12/2024 21:37

Just finished the last of the port. In bed with I pad 9.30 will be asleep soon no doubt. So glad now I’m older and I can ignore NYE and I don’t miss any of the drama that used to occur. Or stumbling around London freezing cold trying to get a cab.

WeRateSquirrels · 31/12/2024 21:07

Agree OP. I feel no pressure to do anything but it still makes me feel weird and I’m glad when it’s over.

edwinbear · 31/12/2024 21:03

I had a conversation with 15y old DS about it this afternoon. I used to enjoy a night out on NYE but far too old and tired these days! I’m very happy with a takeaway, glass of wine and a film. I asked DS what his friends were up to tonight as I was a bit surprised he’d not asked for a lift anywhere and he explained there was a party he’d been invited to, but he didn’t fancy it because he doesn’t really get the fuss - ‘it’s just a date changing from 2024, to 2025 mum’ 🤣. He said he much prefers Christmas which is his favourite holiday all year apparently. I’m sure that will all change in a couple of years, but I thought he made a good point. If you fancy using NYE as a reason to have a bit of a party, see friends and family etc, that’s great. But it’s also a completely valid choice to stay at home in the warm and get an early night.

nookmiles · 31/12/2024 21:00

For me and my family it's just any other evening. I've never liked NYE even when I was young and used to go out and party.

I'll be in bed at 10 and up at 6 for work tomorrow.

PerambulationFrustration · 31/12/2024 20:59

Do what you want. There's no need to feel pressure in doing anything.

Some of my friends are having get togethers but others are -
Grieving so doing nothing
Going to bed at a normal time after dinner with extended family
Alone and going to bed because their teens are at a party
Hanging out with their elderly lonely mother
Everyone else is at home with their dc/family including me. We'll stay up but just watching a film and tv.

mizu · 31/12/2024 20:58

@MauveVelcro wish I felt like this.

I don't make resolutions and don't particularly like the feel of a new year.

I love Christmas and the holidays but there's something about NYE that makes me feel weird. Always went out when young and felt like I had to have a good time - and usually did to be fair - but now I'm happy to stay at home. Just dropped DDs where they needed to be and might have a little whiskey 🥃🙂 here on the sofa.
