every single year my mum rings in the new year with something along the lines of ‘here’s to another shit year’ ‘fuck you all i’m not relying on anyone this new year’ etcetc. this year it’s already begun with telling me she’s ‘fucking sick of you all’ because ive turned down last minute plans because my children have a bug.

no point to this post. just fed up of the negativity.

Ignore her messages and think about whether you really want to expose yourself and your children to this toxicity for another year…

himyf · 31/12/2024 20:11

New Years makes some people weird. Tune out and get off the phone as quick as possible.

Ribenaberry12 · 31/12/2024 19:35

She sounds like one of my aunts. Let me guess, Daily Mail/The S*n reading, Brexit voting fascist who’s had everything handed to her on a plate? We now play Aunty Bingo as to how arseholeish she’s gonna be on any given day.

Knittedfairies2 · 31/12/2024 19:33

Blood is thicker than water, but so is crap. Which this is. Leave her to it OP.

3rdCoffeeThisMorning · 31/12/2024 19:28

Yeah.
Break the chain.

Blood is thicker than water doesn't mean what people think it means and you do not have to take shit to your detriment from someone who gave birth to you, just because they gave borth to you.

Happy 2025 @cherryontoppp wirhout that negativity 😉

PTSDBarbiegirl · 31/12/2024 19:26

Phone on silent. She sounds like a pain in the arse and you’d probably benefit from expressing your desire not to be swamped with her negative comments and passive aggressive responses.

Spaghetticonfetti · 31/12/2024 19:25

She sounds a delight

PenguinLover24 · 31/12/2024 19:24

Leave her in 2024. Life's too short for this crap.

Tara336 · 31/12/2024 19:20

My DM is like this she could literally suck the joy out of the room. It's so hard to cope with because I tend to be quite a happy positive person when I'm.not around her

Nn9011 · 31/12/2024 19:11

I'm in my being blunt era but I'd be so so tempted to just say 'maybe if you did something to change it the next year won't be sh*t'.

Life's too short to listen to people who drag you down!

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/12/2024 18:56

I would grey rock the fuck out of her and go as low contact as you can get away with. No one needs to be an emotional punchbag for their relatives.

Women who are nice when sober can really show another side when drunk.

Alcohol can make some women very aggressive , sharp, and bitter.

It's an awful drug. Sorry you had to hear that, @cherryontoppp .

Mine doesn't drink. She’s just as mean sober.

This year's phone call caught her in company so she had to play happy. Ha! Grin

pestowithwalnuts · 31/12/2024 18:48

My NDN. lost her dh 5 years ago.
She refuses to wish anyone Happy New Year.
If I said it to her then she pretends I haven't said anything. It's weird and also ignorant.
She says it's because her dh died and she can never have a 'happy ' year and she doesn't see why anyone else should have one either

MarieKlepto · 31/12/2024 18:39

Oh God, my grandmother was like that. A walking bingo card of doom. Utterly deflating. And if you took the "oh, dear, that doesn't sound good, what can I do to help?" line, you got told "what do you care?", despite having tied yourself in knots to accommodate her.

Halo20 · 31/12/2024 18:34

OP I would reply back with something like 'well you would be more sick of me if the kids gave you a bug, Happy New Year Mother'

motherofdragons79 · 31/12/2024 18:32

This is why I only send a happy new year text, or else she's class at deflating the mood!!!

MyBirthdayMonth · 31/12/2024 18:31

New Year's resolution: go very low contact with mum and anyone else whose relentless negativity pulls you down.

CautiousLurker01 · 31/12/2024 18:28

text: ‘fucking sick of you too. Feel free not to contact me in 2025 if it will improve things for you. Happy New Year!’

Henry8thHoover · 31/12/2024 18:16

My Mum is like this too, usually when she's had a drink, I don't engage.

FoxtonFoxton · 31/12/2024 18:13

Send back a thumbs up emoji and don't engage further.

McGregor33 · 31/12/2024 18:12

Your mum sounds like mine, never a positive and always a negative! Personally, I went extremely low contact and now I barely hear from her and her negativity 👏🏻

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 31/12/2024 17:38

I have a mum like this OP. My life got easier when I started to ignore the passive aggressiveness and just say “Oh that’s a shame you feel that way, see you some time!” Or “Oh well never mind”.

Completely agree, don’t personalise it (hard to do) so an oh what are you going to do differently this year then?

AuntieMarys · 31/12/2024 18:09

Block her

TorroFerney · 31/12/2024 18:08

Pancakeflipper · 31/12/2024 17:35

Is she pissed already?

I thought that, who uses language like that when speaking to their adult children. Op I think you are right to distance yourself or tell her to google locus of control.
