Double ear piercing - fine at 13?

Our youngest wants to get second piercings in her lobes. She's paying for it herself and she knows from the first lot what the aftercare involves. It's at a very reputable piercing establishment which uses needles not guns.

My mum says it's grossly irresponsible to let a 13yr old double pierce her ears. I'm of the opinion that it's not such a big deal, many have them, they can close up if she changes her mind.

AIBU to be so casual about second ear piercings?

Of course it's fine. Better than girls at my school who were getting their belly buttons done at 12!

StressedQueen · 30/12/2024 14:57

Yeah it would be fine for me. One of my teenagers got it done at 13 while the other waited till 15 but I was fine either way as it was just ears. Right now, my 16 year old is trying to convince me to let her get a belly piercing but I am not sure!

MontyNojangles · 30/12/2024 14:57

My DD is 12 and had her nose pierced for her birthday. She really knew what she wanted, was mature about it, sat wonderfully and did all the aftercare herself. I'm happy, so is she. Can't tell you the amount of shit we've had from school about it though 🙄

SockFluffInTheBath · 30/12/2024 14:57

DD had her seconds done at 14, by 17 she has a total of 9. It’s not something I can get excited about, she’s not a baby, and if she changes her mind she can take them out. It’s not like having your eyeballs tattooed. She got the same drivelly reaction from my mum, it’s irrelevant.

My argument was if you have all these things now at a young age, what do you have to look forward to?

Tattoos and hair dye 😁

I got my lobes pierced at 16 and then let them close up when I was around 18. Reopened them at 21, now have 3 in each lobe (stretched those first ones to 8mm as the original piercing was wonky due to it being done with a gun), 2 in right cartilage and an industrial in my left ear.

Why not enjoy things when they're young. Plenty of other bits to get pierced when she is older if she fancies 😆

Is she's responsible enough to look after them properly, and has asked permission to get them done professionally rather than with a heated needle at home then it suggests she's sensible.

By allowing it, you're showing that you trust her and recognise her bodily autonomy.

It's just a cosmetic thing.

Just check her school allows them.

Pinkelephant66 · 30/12/2024 13:52

Ear piercings are fine. I’d be more worried if she was asking for her nose or belly!

jimmyateworld · 30/12/2024 13:50

I've got 4 in each, my nose pierced both sides, belly button done, I love it all but I'm an adult. I did start at 12 though ! I say let her, it's fashionable now and as long as she looks after them I don't see the issue. I think it's self expression !

Shoes232 · 30/12/2024 13:33

Not an issue, I got my belly button pierced at 13 but my mum wouldn’t let me get a second ear lobe piercing 😂

liveforsummer · 30/12/2024 13:21

No idea why she'd be ok with the first but not the second. No difference really!

LostTheMarble · 30/12/2024 12:18

She is old enough to decide, is paying herself and is being extremely sensible (more than many parents with babies/toddlers) in going to professionals and not some teen with a stapler. Cannot see one reason why she shouldn’t.

Chillilounger · 30/12/2024 12:11

I would be visiting comfortable with this if she looks after the first holes fine. My DD wants two but has said she wants to wait until she's finished school for the second which is entirely her choice.

Whattochoose1 · 30/12/2024 12:03

I remember my Mother having a fit when she realised I'd had a second hole put in my ears...
Until I politely explained it was actually a third one and I'd had the others done a couple of years earlier when I was 13, she'd just not noticed 😂

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 30/12/2024 12:03

I was 10 when I had mine done, my Nan took me and got hers done as well! It's not like she wants her nipples pierced

Rosecoffeecup · 30/12/2024 11:47

I'm in my mid 30s and we all had our second done when we are 13 or 14. Totally not a big deal.

Tinytigertail · 30/12/2024 11:47

It's absolutely fine, she can always take them out later if she changes her mind.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 30/12/2024 11:46

DD got her first set at 10, her second at 12.

MonopolyQueen · 30/12/2024 11:45

Sure, why not? It’s hardly unusual and if she changes her mind later she can just ignore the hole.

Old people are supposed to object to things like this so ignore your dm

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/12/2024 11:45

Dts had their seconds done at 12, really can't see the big deal.

Zae134 · 30/12/2024 11:43

My DD11 has her firsts done, I've said she can have her seconds this summer (so she'll hopefully healed for September). She's looked after them well and she knows what she wants, so I think it's fine.

TimeForTeaAndG · 30/12/2024 11:41

It's not up to your mum, though.

edwinbear · 30/12/2024 11:41

My 13 year old has two. I wasn’t thrilled about the second set but many of her friends have more than that so I let it slide. She looked after them well and no problems with infections etc. I’ve told her that’s the last piercings she’s having until she’s much older - and absolutely, categorically not having her tummy button pieced which she’s been nagging about over Christmas!

oakleaffy · 30/12/2024 11:40

Multiple ear piercings have been around since late 1980’s./1990’s
I don’t wear earrings any more, the holes are tiny.

HoppingPavlova · 30/12/2024 11:40

Why not?
