Hear me out.

She’s rich, beautiful, and meets a man (as handsome as she is beautiful, and not in need of her wealth so she should be able to take him at face value) who makes it clear that caring for his children isn’t a top priority for him.

He proposes and then suddenly, thanks to the appearance of a singing and painfully chirpy nun, he’s in the running for Dad of the Year 1938 and poor Elsa is painted as the villain.

In fairness to her, she bows out with dignity. A lesser woman would have keyed his car. Or shopped him into Hitler.

Baroness Schraeder is goals. The wardrobe, the independent wealth, the attitude. I want to be her. I bet she goes to some amazing parties and owns several tiaras.

She’s very gracious and let’s be honest, once introduced to the 7 children, realised that it is in fact she who is the catch, not the Captain, and quite rightly runs for the hills.

Well, her running for the hills is quite the plot twist! Not sure she has the practical outfits.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:21

Hurrah, Fraulein Schweiser. Keep bowing, lovely.

It's interesting OP, I watched SOM again recently, and felt a bit sorry for her.

When I was younger I saw her differently - she was sort of painted as the bad guy a little bit as she's competition for Maria - more glamorous and worldly. But to be fair to her she steps away gracefully and keeps her composure when she realises that he loves Maria not her.

Also, Christopher Plummer, what a dish!

Edited

I agree that different life stages make you view the characters differently (let's be honest - we've all watched it millions of times!)

I once thought she was the bad one getting in the way of true love.

Then I grew up and realised she didn't know about Maria - when Maria came along he fell for her and she did the right thing by walking away with her head held high and refused to be used.

Who knew the SOM - the easy watch annual Christmas movie could be so profound and deep 😂

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:10

What did wife no 1 die of? Has anyone dredged the lake?

There is a very uncomfortable power dynamic in the Captain/Maria relationship. How convenient that having been ditched by his equal there is an adoring naive ex nun on hand to parent his children and look out for him.

Yes this rings all sorts of safeguarding alarm bells!

And she has the BEST clothes ever! That gold dress! The chic little suits!

Oh that dress is beautiful!!

murasaki · 29/12/2024 18:09

Yes, she can do better.

And Liesl is such a weedy wet..." I'll run to him....."etc

Turmerictolly · 29/12/2024 18:06

Her outfits are gorgeous and she's beautiful. She's quite gracious in defeat.

First thing you should know, Liesl....don't cop off with a Nazi.

Pebbles16 · 29/12/2024 18:04

@SpicyMarge Thanks, this has made me smile (whilst questioning my life choices for watching SOM AGAIN!!)

I love the way she bowed out with dignity when she knew it wasn't her that the Captain loved. She's better off without them, imagine how tiresome it would become very quickly. And that's without being chased by the Nazis.

This - and she also gives him a little nudge towards Maria.

honestly in her position I think I would have been considering boarding school too…

Allswellthatendswelll · 29/12/2024 18:02

Classic man falls for the help/ mother figure. Can't handle a real women his own age.

And what's wrong with boarding school for the children anyway? Their education seemed very lacking as did their socialisation. If Lisel had had a properly rounded education would she have been trying to get off with the Nazi mailman?

He's a walking red flag. Imagine the AIBU, WIBU to move in with a man who owns his own house but doesn't parent his 7 children and will leave it all to me?

Yeah, but he looks great in a suit :-)

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2024 18:02

I bet the Baroness can't make curtain- frocks either.
DH says he's eyeing.up our curtains for a pair of shorts. Until i told him I had a spare curtain...

Yes! No drab curtain fabrics for our Elsa.

I'm watching this and the same thought crossed my mind!

Piggywaspushed · 29/12/2024 17:58

I like the way the film doesn't make her jealous and spiteful. She does her bit for the War Effort by allowing Captain Von Trapp to escape Nazis. I'm sure that lost them the war.
