My BIL has just left and was such a grumpy sod for the whole time he was here. 🙄 I wanted to shake him but DH told me to just leave it, it's just what he's like... and don't I know that's true!!

What about you? Who got on your nerves?

My mum.

My brother lives a few hours away and came up with his wife to stay at mums for Christmas. I don't live that far from her but had dinner at home with my young adult DDs as I lost DH (their dad) this year and we wanted it to be just the three of us for lunch. Later afternoon we went round mums. It's the only time of the year we're all together, but she just moaned that she was missing Strictly and then sat in her chair and fell asleep. She moans when people don't visit but then when we're all together she'd rather watch crap TV. Don't know why we bother.

Everyone.

Starballoon · 27/12/2024 17:27

FIL. Said something which upset me Christmas Day so I spent much of morning in tears. Admitted to DH shouldn’t have said it but not actually apologised to me. Now staying longer than originally planned. I’m completely over this Christmas 😞

MIL.

Just an absolute pain in the arse. I started to type out all the things she did to piss me off but it would have been an essay.

But she is rude, entitled, snobby, miserable, oblivious, selfish and a massive martyr.

I don't think I hid my distain for her actions very well so I'm probably not her favourite person at the moment either tbf.

Sounds like my (narcissistic, abusive) elderly mother.
Fortunately she lives in another country.

My mum. She didn’t even do anything, she’s just annoying as fuck🤣

Ineedanewsofa · 27/12/2024 17:16

My aunt and uncle who arrived an hour early yesterday buggering up my plans with DD, rearranged my kitchen when ‘helping’ to set up the buffet, got through 4 bottles(!) of red wine (brought none either them) and took most of the food home with them when they finally left after 10pm!
Might try to be in an airport on Boxing Day next year…

DH has pissed me right off. Our DC has special needs so our Christmas doesn't go to plan, we are all tired and sad about this but he makes it all about him. He's spent the last two days sulking/sleeping or snapping at us but apparently it's DC who has "ruined Christmas" Hmm

user1494050295 · 27/12/2024 17:14

Partners brother who was meant to bring himself and three children for Xmas day lunch at the sisters house. They turned up two hours late having already had Xmas day lunch with the mother of the children. No message nothing. Two turkeys cooked and lots of leftovers. Selfish c doesn’t come close.

falalalalalalalalalala · 27/12/2024 17:13

MIL
SIL

DH has a brain tumour, he's recently finished a course of radiotherapy and now having chemo, he's just amazing and carries on without any fuss but he was feeling crappy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
MIL never, ever messages or rings to ask how he is. All Christmas Day she waffled on about her various health problems. I wanted to scream at her to stop being so self absorbed and show some compassion for her own son,

SIL just completely blanks us, doesn't like the attention being taken away from her (very much like her mother in this respect). We never see her at Christmas but received nothing from her and no messages, just a quick how are things? would have been nice but nothing. I always try and send her something nice and have had no acknowledgement. I'm resisting the urge to be petty and message to ask if her parcel arrived.

On the plus side, DH is responding really well to treatment and we have had my lovely supportive family here, so I am focusing my love and attention on them. I have no time for DHs family, they can just fuck off quite frankly,

Jokingnotjoking · 27/12/2024 17:11

DM’s extremely lefty and intolerant partner. Perpetual student, no job, never worked, trust fund, tight, all the time in the world to profess his views as the correct most informed ones. Thinks you’re right wing if you’re a bit scared of going to a Christmas market with your kids right now.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 27/12/2024 17:10

My FIL, because he described my Christmas dinner as 'good', when it was fucking amazing.

Onlinemum22 · 27/12/2024 17:10

Our friends arrived this week with their two kids, forgetting the medicated feed for their sick baby. We had a delivery in the middle of the night from emergency services to drop medical equipment off, which turned out to be wrong anyway.
Then we had to wait Xmas day whilst the mum rang everywhere they could think of to get medicated feed... finally tracked some down and I drove her as her husband/ babies dad had started drinking.
The mum has looked after the children the whole time by herself. Dad just sits around with food and drinks we provide, manages to wee all around the toilet everytime he goes, never helps with anything and sleeps in until midday everyday.
House is carnage...
I'm so upset for my friend that she has to deal with this disaster of a husband.

KeyboardplayerXXX · 27/12/2024 17:09

Selfish DS and BIL. Not seen DM for months, no invite for her on Christmas Day. No asking what my plans were and telling me their plans are fixed when I asked if they were inviting DM. They don't realise how much DM adores them all (she sees me all the time!) They were driving to BIL's parents on Boxing Day but couldn't make the effort with her.
I spent the day with DM and she had them on loud speaker when they called all sweetness and light going on about visiting their friends that evening etc etc
Really pissed me off. I'll get over it but have been quietly fuming!!

BlackBean2023 · 27/12/2024 17:08

My mum, and I haven't seen her yet. She lives 2 hours away and has made a fuss about us not going there this Xmas so we've cancelled work/other plans to go up tomorrow and Sunday.

She phoned today to say her friends are coming too and she's booked us into an expensive restaurant for lunch (we'll be expected to pay for our family).

So now we have to drive for two hours to spend the day with my mum and her friends and it'll cost us the best part of £100.

If the kids weren't looking forward to seeing her I'd be staying home and may still develop a nasty stomach flu in the next 24 hours

fizzypop100 · 27/12/2024 17:07

Ds(18) said he wasn't bothered about food. Sat looking miserable and then got up and left after 5 minutes to go to see his cousin.

Dementia was the biggest dick this year, probably the last Xmas whilst my Mum has some semblance of what is going on.
In second place is my sister who never visits her, rarely calls and declared herself and her husband too tired to drive 2 hours to share said likely last Christmas.

I'm so sorry 💐 it's tough

bradypuss · 27/12/2024 17:05

We didnt see my parents over Xmas as planned as we've had flu and my dad is on chemo so didn't want to infect anyone .
So they arranged to go to my brother's....
My brother and family all were ill
Idiots

NewYearNewDietAgain · 27/12/2024 17:03

DSS. Spent the day with a face like a slapped ass. When he did speak (rarely) it was to have a go/bitch/whine. Still, it's better than when he's usually here for dinner and continually picks fights with/has a go at his siblings. They're all adults. 🙄

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 27/12/2024 17:03

MIL is obsessed with cooking/what we eat. From the literal moment we arrived on holiday it has dictated every move we all make. She has told what we can and can’t eat, she has been going on about how tiny she is and how it’s hard to buy clothes so small! She is now cooking food for everyone, which she will do for every meal with no consideration for what others want to eat what time suits people or that we just don’t want our whole holiday to be talking about, buying and prepping food. It’s suffocating. We’re never on time for anything because of the food prep. We are also not allowed to drink alcohol or eat anything unhealthy without a lecture. I’m currently secretly drinking cocktails and trying to pass it off as juice and I have chocolate hidden in my coat.

I’ve been there and I get it.
I was the one of two siblings who made the effort and bothered with my Dad. He passed away when he was 69 after 10 years with early onset Alzheimer’s.

I also remember the first of four Christmas’ when my Dad was in a care home. He couldn’t really communicate and was deep in the throes of the disease. It is cruel and heartbreaking but I also went by the idea that I didn’t know for definite how much he understood so I would continue to make as much effort as I could each Christmas/ Birthday or visit actually because if there were any moments of lucidity then he would appreciate it.
At least you know you have given her a lovely Christmas and you have made memories for you xx
Please also don’t forget Alzheimers patients often remember music so you can play Christmas music for her and she may also recognise familiar Christmas smells xx
It’s so wonderful that she has you by her side. Sending lots of love - I know how tough it is xxx

Garlicwest · 27/12/2024 17:00

Me 😂 I pissed myself off by getting more drunk than I meant to get, being loud and a bit annoying, and overpaying for things because I felt bad about being annoying!

'Twas a good Christmas, though. I'm being punished by a well-deserved hangover.

Redrosesposies · 27/12/2024 16:59

My husband and my Dad as always. My husband has turned into my Dad.
My in-laws are both dead so that's something.☹️

My MIL. The very definition of a fun sponge. My Mum sent her a Christmas card like she does every year and MIL made a point telling me she wasn’t able to send one back because she can’t write any cards herself. This is true because she has physical disabilities. However in her next breath she asked DH to get out a box of cards in the side board and write one for the neighbour 2 doors down as she had popped one through the letterbox earlier. As you might guess I really don’t like her very much.

What a joy... hmmm... I don't think your mum will be too sad without a card back!

My mum.

And I know this is going to make me sound like an ungrateful brat.

But she always fills our stockings with complete tat so a few years ago we agreed that we'd stop doing stockings. I even kept mine and my husband's stocking at my house.

For some reason, this year she decided to buy us all new stockings. And fill them with complete tat!

Most of it is going straight to the charity shop!

Eee people are strange sometimes aren't they... well, let's hope someone in the charity shop likes them!
