My BIL has just left and was such a grumpy sod for the whole time he was here. 🙄 I wanted to shake him but DH told me to just leave it, it's just what he's like... and don't I know that's true!!

What about you? Who got on your nerves?

Hmm. All of the people who failed to keep all of the children out of the kitchen as requested.

NotThisYearThx · 27/12/2024 19:45

No one, which makes a delightful change! I very likely have pissed off a few people by refusing to be a doormat this year, and I had the best Christmas I’ve had in years. Worth it :)

Well family member has just arrived to stay for a few days and announced they and someone they were with on Xmas day were both puking their guts up all day yesterday. So that’s fun.

My worst nightmare. So fucking selfish of people to do this.

Hope you are okay.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 27/12/2024 19:42

My brother. But it's annual event tbh.

HR313 · 27/12/2024 19:41

BIL - he has mental health issues but doesn’t wash, and always wears the same clothes. We told him under no circumstances come into our house with his filthy shoes. So what did he do? Exactly that. My OH had a right go at him, thankfully no damage done but still the thought of what was on the bottom of his shoes makes me feel urgh 🤢 he also bought us a load of tat wrapped in smelly plastic bags - don’t want to sound ungrateful but it will be going to the charity shop in the next few days. Everything smells musty and dank. He’s also been awful to my poor SIL over the past few months and we are at our wits end with it all.

piscofrisco · 27/12/2024 19:34

FIL. Suffering from a 'depressive episode' so didnt speak from Christmas day to Boxing Day (which in turn triggered dh as it reminded him of so many of his child hood Christmases). Miraculously he recovered enough to take himself off to the football on Boxing Day evening and now posting on the family watsapp as if nothing has happened.

ThatFlyIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/12/2024 19:34

MIL announced she would be staying for two fucking weeks (DH feels guilty because we live far away). Predictably this is turning out to be at least ten days too long. She is dull as ditchwater, doesn’t want to do anything, calls me the wrong name and today is wearing some horrible perfume that is setting my asthma off. One week to go…

EggandStress · 27/12/2024 19:22

😧 and did she take it?

She would have but tbh for the first time in my life I stood up for myself.

Thé woman who chose to put a card through my elderly mother's door on Christmas Eve demanding that she leave her alone. They've been friends for years, and she ghosted her this year for no obvious reason.

Ma was worried she might be depressed (experience of this in the family) so had rung a couple of times and popped a gently worded card in her door to let her know she is there for her if she needs- hardly stalking her.

For all she knew my Mum was alone this year. Grrrr.

She's clearly not mentally well, so perhaps compassion might be the way forward?

Dweetfidilove · 27/12/2024 19:25

Absolutely nothing and no-one. It has been a smooth and peaceful season 🙏🏾.

EggandStress · 27/12/2024 19:22

purplecorkheart · 27/12/2024 18:04

My SIL but to be fair she pisses me off constantly.

My mother has enraged me. This probably sounds silly hit a elderly relative of our is terminally unwell and is very unlikely to be here for next Christmas. She bought me a beautiful gift that I love (not expensive but something that she knew I would love). The second this lady left my mother picked up my gift and handed it to my sister in law and told her oh this is beautiful take it home with you.

😧 and did she take it?

tothelefttotheleft · 27/12/2024 19:19

@purplecorkheart

You haven't let her keep it? Contact her and get it back!

Cadburymonster · 27/12/2024 19:18

Cismyfatarse · 27/12/2024 17:57

My mother in law calling me Wendy. My name has an "y" ending but is not Wendy. I have been married to her only remaining son for 27 years and produced her only grandchildren. She is very elderly but can do most things and lives alone with a bit of support from DH.

I bought and wrapped all her gifts. Carefully chose every one. Wrote love from DH and xxxxy on all of them. She still decided to call me Wendy even after DH gently corrected her, and the kids did too.

Exactly the same story for me except I got called 'what's your name again'. DH can do presents next year I'm done to be honest cba anymore.

Lord some people on here have had to deal with right f=€$-ers. But before Christmas there were threads about why on earth would people spend Christmas on their own.

Until meeting DH this year I've had Christmas on my own and loves it! And don't get me wrong, my DH made this year very special. I can deal with pouting BIL cause if it really started to change the day I'd say pack up were taking you home, clearly being here makes you unhappy. I do not have time for some of the people described on this thread! 🫠

My DN.

My plentiful Boxing Day buffet table included a plate of duck spring rolls with a hoisin dip.

Everyone was saying - "oooh I really like those!" There were 12 on the plate, enough for one each or maybe 2 as a few vegetarians were there. Tons and tons of other foods to choose from including vegetable spring rolls.

DN took 6 duck and 4 vegetarian.

He then had the audacity to complain there were none left when he went back for seconds.

In addition to this he also took about 10 of my DDs delicious home made sesame and red onion sausage rolls leaving a paltry few for everyone else. This was before anyone else had a chance to take a few ( he was predictably the first in the queue...) Before anyone says, he is NT and has no allergies.
Oh and he is 21 so should have developed a few bloody manners by now! 😡

Sorry a junior version of my brother visited your house. No doubt he left random glasses and bottles stuck in the corner rather than walking a few inches away to the dishwasher.

My mother. Stayed for the best part of a week, treated the house like a hotel. Barely spoke to the kids. Only left the sofa to sprint to the table when food was served. Spent most of the time on her iPad, and if she was talking, she was complaining (which meant that after the first 24 hours we all tried very hard not to talk to her). Asked me yet again, in a shocked voice, if I really don't drink alcohol when I've been teetotal for nearly a decade. Never offered to help with anything. Told me all about the new stuff she's bought for herself recently and gave me an Xmas present so crap I'm embarrassed to say what it was.

Someone else can have her in future.

imnotthatkindofmum · 27/12/2024 19:05

My best friend who hasn't replied to any messages in over a week!

Glad you did. Not exactly the same, but I gave some presents to my aunt once to pass onto a cousin, and next time I saw her she’d shared them out with said cousin and some of the family kids, but without asking if that would be ok. Pissed me right off because I hadn’t bought them for others to share, but I couldn’t do anything by then.

I understand entirely. I am angry on your behalf. Many many people will not understand how hurtful it is to be dismissed as nothing but I understand.

RabbitsRock · 27/12/2024 19:01

FrogOnAYuleLog can’t believe that! I agree with a pp - send the family member home again! The last thing you want is a sickness bug!

MIL
SIL

DH has a brain tumour, he's recently finished a course of radiotherapy and now having chemo, he's just amazing and carries on without any fuss but he was feeling crappy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
MIL never, ever messages or rings to ask how he is. All Christmas Day she waffled on about her various health problems. I wanted to scream at her to stop being so self absorbed and show some compassion for her own son,

SIL just completely blanks us, doesn't like the attention being taken away from her (very much like her mother in this respect). We never see her at Christmas but received nothing from her and no messages, just a quick how are things? would have been nice but nothing. I always try and send her something nice and have had no acknowledgement. I'm resisting the urge to be petty and message to ask if her parcel arrived.

On the plus side, DH is responding really well to treatment and we have had my lovely supportive family here, so I am focusing my love and attention on them. I have no time for DHs family, they can just fuck off quite frankly,

Yes, they can fuck off indeed.

Our friends arrived this week with their two kids, forgetting the medicated feed for their sick baby. We had a delivery in the middle of the night from emergency services to drop medical equipment off, which turned out to be wrong anyway.
Then we had to wait Xmas day whilst the mum rang everywhere they could think of to get medicated feed... finally tracked some down and I drove her as her husband/ babies dad had started drinking.
The mum has looked after the children the whole time by herself. Dad just sits around with food and drinks we provide, manages to wee all around the toilet everytime he goes, never helps with anything and sleeps in until midday everyday.
House is carnage...
I'm so upset for my friend that she has to deal with this disaster of a husband.

Oh goodness 😟 maybe this is the start of a wake up call for one or both of them.

My mum, and I haven't seen her yet. She lives 2 hours away and has made a fuss about us not going there this Xmas so we've cancelled work/other plans to go up tomorrow and Sunday.

She phoned today to say her friends are coming too and she's booked us into an expensive restaurant for lunch (we'll be expected to pay for our family).

So now we have to drive for two hours to spend the day with my mum and her friends and it'll cost us the best part of £100.

If the kids weren't looking forward to seeing her I'd be staying home and may still develop a nasty stomach flu in the next 24 hours

There are some awful bugs going around🤫
