Husband went to the gym on Christmas Day?

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 13:51

We did Christmas just the two of us. We don’t have children and our families live in different countries.

We did presents, watched a film, cooked dinner and then he said he was off to the gym. He is very much into the gym, goes pretty much every day.

He couldn’t understand why I was annoyed that he couldn’t just miss one day. Aibu?

I can't see an issue with this. DH and I walked the dog together but then he went off for a nap for a few hours in the afternoon while I watched TV on my own.

I grew up with my dad going running on Christmas Day though so it's the norm for me for everyone to have a bit of "alone time" in between all the family stuff.

Runningoutofthyme · 27/12/2024 14:11

A 4 hour gym session or 1 hour?

what was it you wanted to do, that made it an issue he went to the gym?

i wouldn’t want to be stuck in all day but he could of suggested a walk together?

Minesril · 27/12/2024 14:10

I work out most days but had an off day on Christmas Day. Wouldn't've had space for my mat among all the new toys even if I wanted to!

If it was just me and DH I might have though.

My son went on Boxing Day. His gym is open 24/7 and 365 days of the year.

livingafulllife · 27/12/2024 14:10

I have two jym in our town one of them is open 24 hours 7 days a week 365 days a year it never shuts.
Some people just like to get on with things just because its xmas day life dont stop.
I done a deep clean last year de-cluttering out side cleaning windows etc..
This year i went on holiday still on holiday i went to a noddle bar xmas day and spent the night with a very nice man.
My best mate went for a run on xmas day spent the rest of it fixing his car.
My sister went for a 7 mile hike all day.
We are all different some of us are just not in to all this xmas traditions.

Wolfpa · 27/12/2024 14:10

what did you not get to do because he was at the gym? If you haven’t missed out on anything then I don’t see the problem.

GretchenWienersHair · 27/12/2024 14:08

The ‘muscle man’ gyms are often open on Christmas Days. There are a few near me which were open throughout Covid too and went viral for it!

I think leaving someone on their own on Xmas day who doesn’t want to be left on their own is pretty similar 🤷‍♀️. But I guess some people aren’t that fussed about Xmas day….and will still prioritise the gym regardless

Well I think it depends, if something has happened that’s made the op unable to be alone, maybe she lost someone or something then I agree, but if she’s just being needy then I’m afraid I don’t beleive her needs trump his.

Maddy70 · 27/12/2024 14:07

Many gyms were open Christmas day... God the responses here, so little trust

FeegleFrenzy · 27/12/2024 14:07

Shrinkingrose · 27/12/2024 14:05

Yeah but that’s shit and so far away from what happened here it’s not even similar.

Hubby goes for a run every single Xmas day morning. Over the years it’s wound me up no end. He gets up late, dc wants to open presents so we end up doing that without him because I’m so pissed off. He then goes out for a 90min-2hr run. Leaving me to cook dinner on my own. The last 3 years he’s been late back and we’ve started eating without him! We normally have an argument every Xmas day and I end up crying.

I agree with you OP, for one day they could give it a miss. I’m amazed he wanted to go after eating a Xmas dinner!

That's very different: he's screwing up the entire time table obviously not prioritising his DC, and leaving you to do all the work.

The OH in this scenario is doing all the Christmas stuff and then going out to do something for himself for a bit.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 27/12/2024 14:06

DH went to the gym on Xmas day a few years ago. He went early, 6am, did his thing and was back by 8.
Anytime Fitness gyms are open 24/7 they are generally unmanned.

That’s just plain selfish. I’m sorry 😔

I did a workout on Christmas Day too - there was plenty of time for it.

Cantthinkofonenow · 27/12/2024 14:04

Personally I would love a couple of hours to myself to chill out. You still had dinner together. I would understand if he had left you struggling with kids whilst he went out to the gym but you only had to chill by yourself for a bit.
I don’t see the problem

rainbowstardrops · 27/12/2024 14:04

My first thought was I didn't realise gyms were open Christmas Day but if it was and that's where he went, it's a bit shit that he couldn't just miss it for one day. You could have gone out for a walk together if he wanted to exercise a bit.

Anywherebuthere · 27/12/2024 14:04

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 13:59

I should have elaborated more but it’s our first Christmas just us, we’re used to bigger family Christmases. And I just didn’t want to be on my own.

For one day I thought he could miss it. He goes pretty much every day (depending on work).

You are still being very unreasonable.
I think it's good to get out to exercise everyday if its possible. It feels so good.

It's just the two of you. You didn't need to be stuck together for the whole day.

Why did you have some 'me' time and do something for yourself.

I went to the gym Xmas day. Left dh at home.

STOPCOLLABERATEANDLISTEN19 · 27/12/2024 14:03

its not the end of the world op, dont make a big thing of it x

BobbyBiscuits · 27/12/2024 14:02

It sounds like you did all the usual Xmas activities though. Presuming it was just for an hour or so, I'd not be bothered. I'd just use that time to chill out. Or chat to friends on the phone. Or invite a mate or neighbour round for a drink?
Unless he literally left mid way through dinner, or went to the gym for four hours instead of doing presents with you, it doesn't sound that bad.

Is there a back story, did something bad happen so he needed to be with you, and you couldn’t spend an hour or so alone in the evening?

to be honest, I’d have been fine with this, but I’m ok with my own company for a short period. We had our kids here, but had it been the two of us, I’d have done the same.

Our council run gym was open 10am-4pm on Christmas Day.

I went for a 90 mins run Christmas morning.

You're right to be annoyed OP if you had other things planned for that time. If the alternative was vegging on the sofa, why would you be upset he did something he wanted to do with his Christmas?

And for all those insinuating he went somewhere that wasn't the gym, why on earth would you jump to "he's having an affair" because he went to the gym on Christmas day?!

Cos its mumsnet full of judgey judgersons

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/12/2024 14:02

My son went to the gym on Christmas Day. Snap fitness. It was unmanned but open to members.

Did you tell him how you felt? If not yadbu
