Husband went to the gym on Christmas Day?

We did Christmas just the two of us. We don’t have children and our families live in different countries.

We did presents, watched a film, cooked dinner and then he said he was off to the gym. He is very much into the gym, goes pretty much every day.

He couldn’t understand why I was annoyed that he couldn’t just miss one day. Aibu?

My husband’s gym was open on Christmas Day. He didn’t go on Christmas Day but he did go Christmas Eve and Boxing Day but I go past the gym and know for definite it’s open Christmas Day, I don’t think it’s that unusual tbh

Which gym opens on Christmas day? Because none that I know of does.

My gym is part of the leisure centre of a 4* hotel and is open on Christmas Day, but only for a few hours. I agree that the vast majority will be closed.

I’ve asked twice, she says not. I’m taking her at her word.

No one is that needy to begrudge an hour at the gym! There has to be a reason. I don’t buy it.

Dodgydodgydodgy · 27/12/2024 14:22

If it was open I would go just to stick two fingers up at the whole palaver. My gym was shut. I went Boxing Day! DH wasn’t keen but after an hour in the gym and a relax in the spa he was glad he went.

I don’t mind Christmas but I think I want to rebel against it all too. Mixed up in the head. I agree.

I’m fine with my own company, I just wanted to spend the full day with my husband. I didn’t want to sit on my own and watch a film.

If you can’t spend one full day together as a couple then ..

If you can’t be alone at any point during one full day then…

OolongTeaDrinker · 27/12/2024 14:22

We saw loads of runners out on Christmas day when we were on a family walk. Funnily enough even my husband noted they were all men and made a comment about how their wives (we recognised some as dad's from the DC's school) must be at home entertaining everyone/preparing lunch and he is not usually the most observant person!

As there are just the two of you though and no-one was left at home bearing the brunt of hosting, didn't you take that opportunity to just relax, or are you a type of person who doesn't like their own company? Either way if it was just for an hour or two, then I can't see the problem. If he was gone half the day though, I would be suspicious he was elsewhere and the gym was just an excuse..

Is he shagging someone at the gym?

Typical MN response. Some people actually like exercising.

I am saying there is much more to this story, don’t be so simplistic. Clearly there is a backstory.

Dontsayyouloveme · 27/12/2024 14:20

Unless you’d had a conversation about it beforehand and asked him not to (still YABU imo) then I don’t see the problem! If my gym had been open, I’d have gone!

Good grief,

Um what now, you trying tk help her justify it. 😂

Mercurial123 · 27/12/2024 14:19

I can't see the issue. You spent most of the day with him.

If it was just me and DH at home on Xmas day, I’d go to the gym too.

Me too.

A lot of people do Parkrun on Christmas Day and I would have gladly joined one if there had been one near where we were staying. I don't see how that's notably different from the gym.

I think you are saying you felt sad and upset - related to a lack of a family Christmas and perhaps you were looking for support and for him to stay with you?

Someone will be along soon to tell you they did an Ironman in the morning & a triathlon after dinner. Gym is just part of their routine.

I played a football match!

HideousKinky · 27/12/2024 14:18

I really don't understand any adult who can't handle being left on their own for a few hours, on any day of the year

Did you tell him that? Or ask if you could join him/go for a walk together instead?

Ok, I’m sure you can do a day together, that feels quite extreme. And emotionally manipulative.

im afraid I don’t beleive your needs trump his or you get to demand he’s not allowed to do anything he wishes.

TwentyTwentyFive · 27/12/2024 13:53

Was the gym actually open, I find that very hard to believe and as per the previous poster I would think he went elsewhere.

Some gyms open for a few hours, my DB owns one and he opens it for 2 hours on Christmas day for those where it's just another day, for those who like the routine, or for those who are lonely and want a chance to see other humans. Most close, but i wouldn't presume he's lying.

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 14:16

Shrinkingrose · 27/12/2024 14:02

Is there a back story, did something bad happen so he needed to be with you, and you couldn’t spend an hour or so alone in the evening?

to be honest, I’d have been fine with this, but I’m ok with my own company for a short period. We had our kids here, but had it been the two of us, I’d have done the same.

Should have been discussed beforehand.

SatsumaDog · 27/12/2024 14:13

If it was just the two of us, I would probably go to the gym early on Christmas Day. I go pretty much every day and it’s part of my routine. I did go on Boxing Day and it was very busy. I don’t see the issue as long as he wasn’t t there for 3 hours.

WalterdelaMare · 27/12/2024 14:12

I can’t see a problem. Most gym bunnies hate to miss a session.
