Husband went to the gym on Christmas Day?

pineofcone · 27/12/2024 13:51

We did Christmas just the two of us. We don’t have children and our families live in different countries.

We did presents, watched a film, cooked dinner and then he said he was off to the gym. He is very much into the gym, goes pretty much every day.

He couldn’t understand why I was annoyed that he couldn’t just miss one day. Aibu?

I would definitely rather go the gym than do a jigsaw. In fact if someone mentioned a jigsaw I'd be out the door for a walk at least.

I didn't watch any TV on Christmas Day either.

CulturalNomad · 29/12/2024 17:16

I’m only here for the snarky responses now

😂i'm waiting for the Big Reveal, where we learn that he went to the gym and didn't return until the next morning!

Yeah I thought this too.

As a number of posters have said, the rude, obnoxious, and snarky responses from the OP on this thread make it very clear why her husband spends so much time in the gym! 😬 (And away from her in general!)

Anytime Fitness gyms are open 24/7, so I can well believe it’s true. Also it doesn’t sound like he missed much?

Why doesn't it sound like he missed much?

I can see why he wanted to get away from OP for a couple of hours…

Well now you mention it he did secretly go shopping and I found a necklace in a box in his coat pocket. But when I opened my gift it was just a Joni Mitchell CD.

You should get out more, hope this helps

I went for a run on Xmas day, didnt for one minute think I shouldn’t.

Yes this. We did things as a family and things separately. I did yoga and lounging in a bath for ages I hope DH isn’t posting about my selfish behaviour somewhere.

PeloMom · 27/12/2024 22:07

It’s the one question you keep on avoiding answering. If he was gone for 1-2 hrs you’re unreasonable. If he was gone for 3+ hrs - yes it’s a bit much.
theres no one in the world I want to spend 24 hrs with- I personally need breaks throughout the day otherwise I feel suffocated. What if him taking a bit of time/ space helps him be a better partner?

Don't waste your time, clearly the OP has not intention of engaging in a proper conversation and prefers to pop up from time to time for a snark and a prod.

tedious.

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 29/12/2024 02:47

I do think you're being a bit precious - surely it's not much different to a normal weekend day? He was probably gagging at the Bit because knew it would be deserted and he'd have free Rein (see what I did there?!). You should have taken the opportunity to either accompany him or toodle around doing whatever - even if it's watching crap TV! 99% of MN'ers would welcome a few hours to themselves to have an uninterrupted bath etc.

surprised the gym was open on Xmas day

Me too!

GravyBoatWars · 28/12/2024 18:50

This is from the plot of Love Actually. OP was snarking about the posters salivating for this to be an affair.

You found a necklace from his secret shopping, but you got given a CD?

He wasn't at the gym.

dreamer24 · 28/12/2024 17:06

I can also confirm that my local Pure Gym was open on Christmas Day. Obviously I didn't go because that would be mental 😂 But it was open nonetheless.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 28/12/2024 16:43

To those who say gyms don't open Christmas Day, Pure Gym for example does. Even when it's 'closed' ie no receptionist there you can still get in with your pass/code. My mums friend also does a Christmas morning run every single year.
It's a bit ott maybe but my brother can be a bit like this. He actually gets quite uncomfortable if he's eaten more than his usual diet and will generally want to go. If he was only there for a bit then that's a chance for you to watch something you want to watch or sink into a nice hot bath.

Glittertwins · 28/12/2024 15:58

I've been to my gym on Christmas Day before, really early before anyone else was up.

TooManyChristmasCards · 28/12/2024 15:49

It was Christmas. Of all days of the year, WHY would anyone be stopped to do what they really enjoy just because they have a grumpy partner who wants to watch more tv or do a jigsaw?

Imagine the husband writing a thread that his wife dared disappearing in the bath for one hour on Christmas day (or for a run, or went to the gym, like many of us have also done...)

Be grateful the man has a hobby and do something YOU enjoy doing.

diamondpony80 · 28/12/2024 15:37

Don't see the issue. DH is a daily gym goer and would go on Christmas Day if we didn't have the kids home with us. You did all the Christmas stuff like dinner, movie, presents etc. so why not? I'd be glad of a few hours to myself!

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 15:08

UnstableEquilibrium · 27/12/2024 22:18

You'd need to be the world's dimmest adulterer (or have a ridiculously low opinion of your spouse) to tell them you're off to the gym on Christmas Day if the gym in question advertises that it's closed. It's hardly subtle.

Well, quite.

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 15:07

Cranmer · 27/12/2024 15:05

I did park run on Christmas day and so did 1000 others in my town. It meant Christmas day stresses started after 10.30am in our house!

Exactly. We start on the presents and Xmas fizz about 11am in our house. I don't think it would be any earlier if we didn't do parkrun, we still need to prep dinner veg and get the turkey in the oven beforehand, we'd just get up later!

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 15:03

whosaidtha · 27/12/2024 17:15

My gym is 24hrs but was closed Xmas day.

I said "many" would be accessible on Christmas Day.

Not all of them. But quite likely the OP's DH's gym.

Spidey66 · 28/12/2024 15:00

I think it's fine and no different to going for a jog or walking the dog. I'm no gym bunny but it seems to be a routine for many people.

BusyPoster · 28/12/2024 09:15

Sounds fine to me, I went swimming in a lake on Christmas morning and thought it was nice to get out for an hour or so.
My gym is open, it’s in a hotel so open every day.

Golden407 · 28/12/2024 09:08

GCAcademic · 27/12/2024 13:54

Which gym opens on Christmas day? Because none that I know of does.

I went to the gym Christmas day, there's four ot five open around here

Eyresandgraces · 28/12/2024 09:03

If you have a problem with him going to the gym then that's fair enough.
It wouldn't bother me but I quite enjoy my own company for a few hours.

My dh went and did a practice half marathon when I was in early labour. I found it quite amusing, others would be v. cross I imagine.
