To think Anna Maxwell Martin ‘made’ Gavin and Stacey?

When I first saw her on screen, I literally couldn’t believe my eyes.

As a whole it was pleasant enough and watchable albeit a bit boring in parts - e.g the whole stag do thing was bit ‘meh’ - but I couldn’t just sit through it without scrolling through phone which is terrible habit I know

Withdrawn at the poster's request.

Both AMM and OC annoy me.

Loved the finale 💖💖💖

She’s a very one note actor

You post the weirdest stuff.

Couldn't agree more.

I love AMM but was gutted the role wasn’t played by the original Vicar who shouted at Gavin over the sandwich filling. Still amazing episode though.

That makes no sense. The vicar was at the parish church in Barry. AMM played a registrar, not a vicar, in Essex. Why would Smithy and Sonia's civil ceremony be transported to a religious one in Wales so the same vicar could officiate?

IsadoraQuagmire · 27/12/2024 12:28

I've never liked her. I don't see her on tv, because I very rarely watch any UK drama, but I've been very bored watching her in the theatre several times.

It's funny isn't it how different we all are?

I loved Anna Maxwell Martin in Motherland, but I thought her acting in Gavin and Stacey was really 'off' and I couldn't work out why.

I was disappointed and surprised.

I agree, I felt like she was basically playing Julia in G&S which was weird and didn't fit.

DonnaGiovanna · 27/12/2024 11:35

Ruth Jones was quite clearly the standout - she played heartbroken but stoical sooo well.

DonnaGiovanna · 27/12/2024 11:33

She was fine, I guess her uptightness about the service unravelling was intended to mirror Sonia's whereas the celebrant in the Nessa/Smithy wedding was warm and relaxed and a perfect fit for them as a couple.

TheHallmarkedMan · 27/12/2024 11:17

Starting to wonder 🤣

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 27/12/2024 11:17

Maybe OP is Anna Maxwell Martin?

TheHallmarkedMan · 27/12/2024 11:14

OP commented on the wonders of AMM's performance on the other G&S thread too. Most peculiar, she was barely noticeable.

Cosycover · 27/12/2024 10:56

😂😂😂😂😂 fuck off.

I actually wish she wasn't it in. I don't like her. The way she said rings to Gavin while pulling that stupid fuckin face gave me the rage.

Shes shite.

greengreyblue · 27/12/2024 10:33

Agree Nessa was great. And. Smithy.

greengreyblue · 27/12/2024 10:31

She was on screen for such a tiny part! Hardly ‘made’ the show in my opinion I think they could be made more of her, perhaps doing a bit of a ‘Julia’. She was quite straight. Loved the finale though. We all let out a collective groan when Sonia was at the wedding fair!

LuluBlakey1 · 27/12/2024 10:29

She might get a BAFTA for that 30 seconds. It was a game-changer, stand-out piece of acting.

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2024 10:25

Yes, this three minute performance was so much better than her tour de force in Until I Kill You. GrinConfused

TheDogsMother · 27/12/2024 10:23

It was nice to see AMM appear and I think she played it well. I am a big fan of her in Motherland though.

SherbetSweeties · 27/12/2024 10:20

I like her a lot but I wouldn't say it made the show. I thoguht the cast as a whole made the show.

ZippyDoodle · 27/12/2024 10:19

No, not at all.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 27/12/2024 10:18

I thought it was a bit odd that she was there as she didn’t do anything that any extra would have. It wasn’t like she had to really act.

I loved the episode and I don’t mind AMM but she didn’t make the show.

Methinks the OP is pulling our collective leg! 😆

AMM is good - but she was in this for about a MINUTE! How could she 'make' an HOUR AND A HALF LONG SHOW, when she was in it for a minute?!

She was also fairly basic in this too. Anyone could have played that role for that one minute!

But both these appearances triggered an

“oh THIS is good” reaction in me

Well that's you.

As a piece of writing they are completely different things. One contributes nothing and could have been played by anyone.

The other was tied into a long-running theme that appears from Episode one until the finale and contributes significantly to the honour, our understanding of Nessa, her past and whether what she regularly claims is true.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 27/12/2024 10:18

Olivia Coleman is an amazing actor

Jumell · 27/12/2024 10:04

The low key ness of it

Exactly the same as John Prescott just nonchalantly appearing as a guest in the wedding of Nessa to Dave Coaches

They’re entirely different things. John Prescott played himself, as a nod to Nessa’s colourful past.
AMM was just an actress playing a small part in a TV programme.

I didn’t hate G & S by any means … I found the final reasonably enjoyable just parts of it tiny bit - ‘meh’ eg Stag Do

Eh? ??? Confused
