Teenage boys are great

They just are. They are like enormous Labrador puppies with gangly uncoordinated bodies and huge feet.

I love watching my son and his mates interact. They have this innate sense of fairness and decency and half the time they are little boys and the other half, something caught between boys and men. If you can surreptitiously listen to them, they will be big noting, exaggerating and bullshitting about all the great dangerous and fantastic things they will be doing until one of them looks at his enormous feet and reminds the others that they will have to ask their mum before partaking in whatever grand endeavour they have planned . Silence will follow in deference to the higher authority.

They smell and are kind and can lift incredibly heavy things. Their jokes are stupid and glorious and they laugh so loud. I love how their shoulders broaden overnight and they get hairy and awkward. I love how they are terrified of girls and then suddenly they aren’t.

They get a bad rap but the ones I know are just fab.

I have two - one teen and one pre teen. They’re different but lovely in so many ways. The older one is suddenly strong and takes huge pleasure in carrying in ALL the shopping bags or carrying a super heavy suitcase without mentioning it. He’s also started reading books like 1984 and The Road and having really good insights into them.
The younger one has always loved Lego and this has transferred into a brilliant ability for making flat pack or any spatial awareness things plus he’s great at cooking and loves all opportunities to make food.
They’ve also both cultivated loves for things shared with their grandad - aeroplanes and formula one and it was so nice seeing them animatedly discussing the coming 2025 season with a 78 year old yesterday.
We are also a very open family and hug all the time, tell them what a great job they’ve done, tell them when they should feel proud of themselves and this so far seems to have made them very bouncy and happy.

DS (mid-teens) sat up until around 2am on christmas eve tinkering with his younger brother's games console to install upgrades including a bigger/better hard drive (this was his present to his brother) so that it would be ready for him first thing on Christmas morning.
(Both of them attend Midvale school, as mentioned upthread)

I love teenage boys, they are so loving and kind and funny. My 15 year old Ds, 6 ft tall with size 13 feet, was up at 7:20 yesterday morning because he was too excited to sleep. He bought me my own table tennis bat for Christmas (his favourite sport, not mine 😊).
My 17 year old DS was so proud that he had independently remembered to buy me a card, he asked me about six times if I liked it. They’re fab.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 26/12/2024 08:55

Yes mine is friggin brilliant. We lost his dad when he was 9 and so he went through a lot. He’s nearly 16 and I have the widest smile on my face the way he’s turned out. He makes me belly laugh every single day.

SallyWD · 26/12/2024 08:54

So nice to see a positive thread about boys. Certainly not always the case on here. My almost teenage son is adorable. Very loving with a great sense of humour. Can't wait to see how he develops.

Dearg · 26/12/2024 08:51

Lovely to read of all these lovely young men. Reminds me of my beautiful nephew when he was a teen. Such a friendly, kind soul.

Whattodo121 · 26/12/2024 08:50

I’ve got an almost teen DS and am a teacher who has predominantly worked with teenage boys for the last 20 years. I can confirm that they are in fact, wonderful 🥰 I laugh so much at work every single day, watching their shenanigans and daftness. Yesterday DS was charming to his grandparents and his aunty, playing charades, eating endless pigs in blankets and talking about all sorts of things. He’s intelligent, funny, empathetic and really good company. I’m very lucky.

Slothlydoesit · 26/12/2024 08:48

I agree! Mine is funny, interesting and kind and I love having him and his friends around.

I have a teenage daughter too and love her also. Teenagers are great in a way I hadn’t expected, but I’m especially surprised at how much I like having a teenage son- I definitely didn’t think I’d find him such good company.

Isitisit · 26/12/2024 08:42

Aww! What a lovely thread to read after I’ve been sleep tortured last night by my baby boy. 😂

So excited to see the boy and man he will grow into and love reading this.

Hercisback1 · 26/12/2024 08:39

I have younger ones and work with teens. This thread is a delight.

NewZealandintherain · 26/12/2024 08:38

Yes yes yes! I have several of my own and teach too, they are great!

Love this thread.

Fratty · 26/12/2024 08:37

I love how my son and his friends always openly expressed love and affection for each other, and as men in their early twenties, all launching into adult life, still do. My son has a 💙 next to some of his friends' names in his phone.

LimeYellow · 26/12/2024 08:35

My boys are 15 and 19 and I agree! My younger DS is all about "banter" but gives the best hugs and needs me to catch spiders in his room.

Wheelz46 · 26/12/2024 08:31

A wonderful thread about how fabulous boys are, both mine are really growing up to be so kind and caring.

I have a teen and not quite a teen and they are an absolute delight, both always buy me and their dad presents for special occasions and you can tell they spend a lot of thought on choosing their gifts.

The care they have for their family and friends and it is such a pleasure to see. One of the grandparents is really struggling health wise and they both go to help out when they can.

Additionally any heavywork that used to involve me around the house with house reservations etc. is now helped with by my boys and not through asking but because they want to.

They truly are wonderful ❤️

IkeaMeatballGravy · 26/12/2024 07:55

What a lovely thread, my eldest boy is 11 and the incoming teenage years have been on my mind.

Roselilly36 · 26/12/2024 07:54

my two are 23 & 21 never given us any trouble, they are both lovely young men.

Hedonism · 26/12/2024 07:49

I totally agree 🥰

My DS is funny, helpful and loyal, and he is such a wonderful big brother to DD. What a lovely thread.

I work in a boys' school (girls in 6th form only). Since qualifying in 2002 I've almost entirely worked with teenage boys.
With occasional exceptions they are fabulous.
Our last Year 13 returned for their certificate tea before the holidays and they did indeed bound up to us like excited labradors to tell us all they'd been up to since August.

Squidgemoon · 26/12/2024 07:43

I have an 8 year old DS who is such a joy, I think he’ll be a lovely teenager too. My nephew is now 21 and was pleasant and charming right through his teenage years, always pleased to see us and gave us hugs, “Hello Aunty Squidgemoon how are you?” None of the grunting you hear about. My next door neighbours have 2 boys now in their early 20s and they were both lovely teen boys too, always having gangs of friends over but always polite.

I have 2 boys - a pre schooler and a baby and I can’t wait to see what they’re like when they’re older!!

I remember when my boys were that age. They were always bombing about the place, it was exhausting. But I've loved having them as teens. They are exactly as described here. Funny, interesting, helpful and kind.

Vettrianofan · 26/12/2024 07:35

They really are the best. I have two boy teenagers and two boys yet to be teenagers....

17yo DS is currently with his girlfriend in New York over Christmas. He is mature for his age, has a part time job, and just bought me earrings for Christmas as well as gifts for his three brothers and a gift for DH before he flew out to the US.

If I am sad he asks if I want a hug. My 14yo is very similar. They're brilliant boys❤️

Osory · 26/12/2024 07:22

I agree . Two gorgeous teen boys in this house. Was just thinking how grateful I am for them . They're amazing 😍

notyourmummy · 26/12/2024 07:15

Totally agree. Mine is 13, hugely overemotional (as he has been since age 2), very self-depricating, but absolutely gorgeous, with a brilliant cheeky sense of humour, amazing talent at photography, hugely intelligent and sensitive to others, loyal and loving. Taller than me (and I'm not short!) and still gives me a kiss every morning - love him, love him, love him!!

idontknowwhotovotefor · 26/12/2024 06:46

I have a 15yo one and he is delightful 😍
Also incredibly bright but no common sense, he manages to inadvertently find himself in the most ridiculous situations, he's like a one-man sitcom 😁
I've always adored him, but this stage is giving my heart an extra little burst 🥰

JackGrealishsCalves · 26/12/2024 06:41

What a wonderful post and incredibly accurate 😃.
Mine is 19 now and away at Uni, he is still lovely even if his favourite phrase is "I'm knackered" nowadays, he's still great company when he's not asleep 😁
