To think MIL is being extremely rude

This year my kids are all elsewhere for Christmas, one is working, one is on a gap year in Australia and one is with her boyfriend.
We offered to come up to MILs and make her dinner and save her travelling, but she is being bloody well rude.

First - she invited 3 of DHs cousins and 2 kids to join us, so I've gone from making dinner for 3 to cooking for 8.
Second - last night we put some Christmas music on (think wizzard and wham) and she complained they couldn't sing, it wasn't real music and got out her little MP3 player, put her earphones in and sung loudly over it
Third - She got up at 6 am and opened all her presents while everyone else was still asleep. She's since complained non stop about one of the gifts
Fourth - I planned to make dinner for 3, she's now complained endlessly so I'm having to make it for 2 when no one else will be hungry yet.

AIBU to think she's been bloody rude? She's in her 80s but I don't think that's an excuse!!

I just want to know what present she is complaining about #nosey

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/12/2024 13:11

What’s the present she’s bitching about?

Is it small enough to be frisbee’d out of a window?

MrRobinsonsQuango · 25/12/2024 13:10

Definitely rude. Plus selfish, immature and obnoxious. Make sure you do zero cleaning up -you made dinner after all

fuckmemytoehurts · 25/12/2024 13:09

I'd honestly leave, OP. You and your husband go home, make some nice food or have a cheese board and have some wine together. Leave her whiney arse with the other family members to deal with.

I'd tell her why you're leaving too. Don't forget OP this is YOUR Christmas, just as much as hers.

I do think DH should be telling her to wind her neck in, though.

Jesus that sounds awful!

What does your DH say? Why didn't you say no to the extra guests? Just curious. It's your house and your resources after all.

Sorry we are at MILs this year, but I'm doing the cooking etc.

She didn't tell us until we arrived on Monday and said it very casually.

I've never hosted her at Christmas before usually DHs brother does Christmas but he's been away on holiday the last few years - starting to see why!

It’s MIL’s house

She sounds awful OP.

Yes she is rude. Has she always been like that?
Pity you didn't think of developing diplomatic covid when you hears about the other guests she invited!

She sounds awful. I would go home and leave them all to it.

RubyMentor · 25/12/2024 13:04

You should have stepped back when she invited the other family members, you were going so that she wouldn't be alone, she invited extra company
