Christmas cancelled

Feeling very sorry for myself! Had family coming over today for Christmas, I've spent ages preparing food, games, the usual - they've cancelled last minute as they're ill.

It can't be helped and I'm not upset with the family at all, just really disappointed to be spending Christmas alone 😔

I also think that’s really mean of them. My mum would be coming anyway but if really not able to travel she would at least tell me to come to her rather than be alone.

Bugger cooking for them, do yourself a lovely meal, have a nice walk and eat all your favourite chocolates while watching Christmas films💐

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 25/12/2024 07:21

They want you to cook dinner for them all but not be with them to eat it.....???? No chance!

This is so rude OP, don't be so soft. If they can't make the effort to come on Christmas Day because they're so ill, then there is no way on this earth I'd be cooking dinner for them to collect later or allowing them to come and pick up food as though I was a free supermarket. Stand up for yourself and have some boundaries.

This is a good point, OP.

Why are you still cooking?

Could you freeze some of it and delay Christmas Day until they’re a bit better?

TheOnlyAletheia · 25/12/2024 07:20

Are they having a laugh?? If they’re not well enough to come over and have lunch, wtf are they picking up food??!!!

Anewuser · 25/12/2024 07:19

I’d either be cooking and taking the food over, then staying. There’s no way all six of them will be in bed, especially the children. Or say bugger that, you’re all ill, better off having soup and toast for their dinner.

Then you can enjoy a lazy day of telly and chocolate, after your long walk.

Mercurysinretrograde · 25/12/2024 07:18

I’d tell them you have decided that you won’t be cooking today. Bloody rude! Do they think you run a takeaway service???

StrawberryFields67 · 25/12/2024 07:15

SandSandy · 25/12/2024 07:10

I did say they were still very welcome, but they said they'd rather not.

They're now going to pick up a lot of food later though so at least that won't go to waste!

Oh that’s crap, I’m sorry OP.
Hope you have a good day, lots of food and telly.
Merry Christmas x

4 adults and 2 kids - (my parents, my sister, BIL and their two daughters)

DM phoned early this morning to say that they're all feeling headachy and achy (Dsis staying with them) so they're going to stay there.

They've just said that BIL is feeling the least worst so he will drive to mine and pick up dinner for them all once I've finished cooking.

OP I’m so sorry. Maybe I’m just grouchy because I’m working right now but this is so unbelievably mean :( They’re all together at your parents’ but are happy to leave you alone on Christmas Day? Look after yourself today, have a nice breakfast and go on a long walk💐

Make sure you save the best bits for yourself.

And leave plenty for your leftovers tomorrow.

You did all the hard work so don’t let it all go to them.

Any chance you can go to them? Did they say you can come over?

I think I'd just tell them to come anyway and get the illness! Unless you are immuno compromised or something. That's a lot of money and effort going to waste.

Bugger that!!!! That’s just rude!!

you stay in snuggled up, enjoy some time to yourself, watch some Xmas movie, eat all the pigs in blankets and chocs.
but don’t cook for them all - that’s unfair on you.
merry Christmas OP (& all MN’ers!!)

SquigglePigs · 25/12/2024 07:10

I sympathise. We had to make the call on Monday that we couldn't meet up with family as planned today. DD has been sick and has a high temp plus one of them has a severe chest infection (sent to hospital yesterday by GP level of severe). It's rubbish but nothing to be done.

I am sad though because Christmas last year got turned on it's head after family member on the other side was admitted to hospital on the 23rd (fortunately recovered well) so I'd been hoping for a smoother Christmas this year.

My partner just told me to move out. I’m looking for a hotel and trying to find food. Merry Christmas to us all.

I'm so sorry.

Have you got anyone you can stay with?😞 😢

Aw that's bad luck, bless you!

Hope you still have an enjoyable day!

BackinBlack24 · 25/12/2024 07:04

I've spent a good few Christmas alone over the last few years it's shit when you first get your but I just made the most of it , I got cozy , made myself nice things to eat and drink and watch my favourite film . It's actually quite relaxing . Try find the little joy in it x

JustMyView13 · 25/12/2024 07:02

If you cook the meat & make the gravy, it can be frozen together and then defrosted and microwaved.

Also have they all got flu or is it just a sickness bug? Could you reschedule to the weekend?

NiftyPeachDreamer · 25/12/2024 06:58

What is the illness, do you know?

If it was just the start of a cold I’d still want my family to come (if they wanted to of course).

ErrolTheDragon · 25/12/2024 06:56

Do go for a walk (it's cloudy but mild and dry most places). We've occasionally deferred 'Christmas' and gone out instead - we've found there's quite a few others doing likewise, all greeting each other cheerily. Take a nice sandwich and a flask, maybe binoculars if you have them.
Have a happy - if more peaceful than expected - Christmas.

Arielsmummy · 25/12/2024 06:53

My in laws come to mine last night full of cold and cough...I'd have rather they didn't or at least said beforehand and gave us the choice. 100% we'll be ill now.
But I understand on your own that is very disappointing, try to make the most of the time of it being relaxed. Take a long bath, watch some films, eat those chocolates 😁
Merry Christmas
