To hope these antibiotics work before tomorrow

DD (5.5) just got diagnosed with chest infection after high fever lasting from Thursday-Saturday, cough, one bout of diarrhoea and overall not being happy, hasn't ate anything today, thought we was seeing an improvement yesterday but woke up today coughing her lungs up as she was all night and crying and not wanting to move. And was even falling asleep on me in the GP office.

Took her to GP who prescribed penicillin for chest infection ( first time needing antibiotics ) I may have just had a little cry because I'm so sad she won't be able to enjoy any part of the day tomorrow.

DH is exactly the same but older and much more capable of putting on a face for a couple hours.

In anyone else's experience is there any chance of improvement by tomorrow morning?

Will be giving all 3 doses today even though she will have to be woke up for the last one.

Is currently sleeping now.

Just about to give 3rd dose, managed to get her to eat a little bit though and drinking and is still weeing, stayed awake for 4 hours after waking up, so far seems ok, thought temp was going back up again as one measurement was 38 and then an hour later was 37.5 and just checked an hour ago it was 36.6. So i dont know if the thermometer is a bit off.

Cough is coming out more and more and it's annoying her very much, but I wouldn't say that's a deterioration just yet, breathing has been a little fast but aside from that seems ok at the minute.

Will be waking her for the 3rd dose as really don't want any missed doses.

Actually been given amoxocillin!

Dr asked us about penicillin so I assumed she'd be on that... however just read the actual bottle under the sticker

That is a penicillin

Christmas movies and cuddles sounds perfect. Maybe write her a get well soon letter from Santa on top of her presents hoping she’ll enjoy them when she’s better.

Awwwwwwww do this op!

WolfFleece · 24/12/2024 20:15

Sounds like the flu bug I had over the last couple of weeks. My timeline was Friday evening-Tuesday, raging fever. Went to doctors on Tuesday and got antibiotics, Wednesday felt a lot better but still not quite right, Thursday was back at work.

Bobbie12345 · 24/12/2024 20:07

Wait until everyone is truly well to do Christmas.
We had one year when we went ahead on the 27th because we felt we should. Neither DH nor one DD really enjoyed it. The next year various illness kept hitting one after another. We held strong, waited until the 5th Jan and had one of our best Christmas’s ever.

Jingleberryalltheway · 24/12/2024 13:45

A five year will be expecting gifts tomorrow. Delaying gifts will feel like punishing them for being ill. It normal takes 40+ hours for antibiotics to work so I would plan on a low key day for tomorrow.

I'd go by what she wants to do. I remember a miserable Christmas Day feeling very ill as a kid and having to be helped to open my presents. And just having no enthusiasm at all for it, not wanting to play with them etc as felt so bad. It would have been better waiting a day really.

If it's any consolation, I had to have the GP called out to me for ear infections at least two Christmases in a row at that age (back when they'd do stuff like that!!) and I only know about it now as my parents told me. I have no memory of a miserable Christmas, so while she may feel a bit under the weather tomorrow, overall she's likely to not remember specifics, remember the good bits!

I had the same, can't remember feeling miserable during Christmas Day but can remember going to the doctors house that night because I had an ear infection.
Your DD won't remember this op, I think a message from Santa on top of her presents saying he hopes she feels better is a great idea

Tiswa · 24/12/2024 18:38

Amoxicillin is a pencillin and the normal frontline antibiotic to ward off such infections - it is fast acting so should see an improvement tomorrow and certainly within 48 hrs

and detoriation or not getting better needs checking

And also can I state through this my DD hasn't seen me visually distressed she won't be well for Christmas, it's on the mental side for me that is just sad as she was very much looking forward to see all family too, also has been the one changing the Christmas countdown everyday because I forget. So there hasn't been any " theatrics "--

And so it's just a shame that after a 6 day illness is now back to being poorly with a chest infection.

Will see how she gets on anyway! Just not nice to see her so sad.

@Tiswa

We was prescribed penicillin, the GP did say a couple days, and now DR office is closed until Friday unfortunately so I'm just hoping these were the right antibiotics. It's the first time we've needed antibiotics.

I had essentially the same thing last week and, 24 hours after antibiotics, I felt MUCH better. Finished the course now and almost back to normal (still tired, blocked sinuses, hacking cough though).

Talkabtit101 · 24/12/2024 14:33

Thank you for all the advice!

I've made a hamper as mentioned above and we'll see how she gets on, is currently still asleep and I'm just letting her rest through it. Hopefully is feeling much better soon.

@Hellisemptyallthdevilsarehere

It's agree to disagree, I won't take back my statement of a small minded person.

I think it's clearly obvious if a child is poorly the mother will be worried, but this post wasn't about asking for advice on my child's illness or to express my concern for her health, I have those issues and I'm dealing with those issues.

And also already made a post on Thursday asking for advice because I have health anxiety where people were lovely and offered advice how to deal with it. Today however I have been to a GP a medically trained professional who has told me the antibiotics should kick in, he's checked her all over. And all vitals were fine this morning.

This is her first Christmas where she has counted down the days to the special day, and has took part in numerous activities awaiting Christmas morning, so yes I'm sad because she might not be herself and able to enjoy it.

Once again, I obviously care for my child's health, but this isn't what the post was about.

This post wasn't made strictly for advice on how quick antibiotics can work.

@ApparentlyRockBottomHasABasement

Ooooof aren't you a small minded little person, there's always one on each thread.

Hmm, do you think it was my happiness that took her to the Gp office this morning? Bore off, I'm clearly worried about her hence why I'm sat with her right now whilst she sleeps and making sure she's drinking and weeing, making sure her head is elevated and her breathing is fine.

I won't be apologising for being bothered that my happy little girl who has looked forward to Christmas for so long is now sad and unhappy and won't be able to enjoy her day.

I can't find anywhere in my post that says " I'm so happy she has a chest infection I'm just really sad she won't enjoy Christmas "

Keep your shitty words to yourself. Cheers.

I don't think it's small minded to read your OP and consider that getting her well in time for something isn't more important than her getting well.

It's obvious that you can give her presents if she's with it and wants them, or wait a couple of days and spend our the things you have planned.

Either she'll be excited and up for it or not at all bothered because she needs to sleep and recover. It's you making it a drama of her missing something vitally important.

And while no, you obviously didn't say you're thrilled she has a chest infection but sad about Christmas, you are focussing on tomorrow, when that's neither here nor there and being rude that someone sees this.

Onlyvisiting · 24/12/2024 14:06

Unless she is super excited and aware of the days of the week I'd postpone most of it, (big meal, presents) and just snuggle up with a film till she's a bit brighter. Boxing day presents will be at least as much fun!

Talkabtit101 · 24/12/2024 14:04

@BobbyBiscuits Me too! However has been asleep since 1 hr after taking the first one so bit hard to see any improvement yet, and was up an awful lot last night so I imagine she is quite exhausted. Plus is very very upset about having a cough.

@Starlightstarbright4

No visitors as we've told everyone we're poorly and the visitors we were meant to have are elderly/immunocompromised, so we delayed meeting until after we're better purely because of how this illness has affected us and we're normally young and fit.

Is 5.5, we'll do a very low key Christmas, and then take her out somewhere nice afterwards as a " get well treat from Santa "

OP posts:
Tiswa · 24/12/2024 14:01

Antibiotics if the right one should act really quickly - DS was in A&E the day before his party and rallied enough for the next day (not contagious)

if she isn’t looking better after the first day tomorrow I would get her checked again

BobbyBiscuits · 24/12/2024 14:00

I hope so too. But in my experience antibiotics start to feel like they're working after the first dose.

Cornettoninja · 24/12/2024 13:59

@Jingleberryalltheway I didn’t mean to completely withhold presents (assuming she’s aware of the date etc.) more just present her with the option to hold off till later but with the presents visible. If ‘Santa’ authorises it then it might appeal to her to just open a couple here and there.

edit to address correct poster!

Talkabtit101 · 24/12/2024 13:59

Thank you everyone!

I've just put together a little hamper for her, just in case she isn't feeling it tomorrow an I have wrote a letter from Santa! If I see an improvement later today I'll give it her tonight and do morning as usual.

Is still asleep at the minute and only waking up to have a coughing fit then straight back to sleep.

@coldscottishmum sorry about your little one :( that's hopeful atleast, her third dose will fall through the night, so atleast there's a chance to sleep it off too.

Starlightstarbright4 · 24/12/2024 13:59

I had one year Ds wasn’t well . He had his presents .
I didn’t bother cooking Christmas dinner he was too unwell to eat it so did it a couple of days later .

Do you have visitors - lower expectations of how Christmas will be . Antibiotics typically take 24-48 hours to kick so may feel a little better tomorrow .

depending on age . You could pretend Boxing Day is Christmas Day

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 24/12/2024 13:58
