Sly extra spending at Morrisons (insert other supermarket as preferred)

Just a heads up for folks to keep their eyes on the cashier whilst packing up your Christmas big shop into bags.

Husband was brilliant in loading the conveyor with big shop and dutifully stood uncomplaining with wallet in hand to pay.

I took on the packing duty, (seasoned experience applies) and we had us all done in due course. Cashier certainly did not rush, chatting to her colleague about their breakfast....

Anyway, when we were told the total by the cashier I asked her to double check as I was sure I'd seen her double scan a bottle of champagne. Prefuse apologies received, machine checked and double scan hastily removed. Husband then happily paid.

Before leaving the till area a quick scan of the receipt showing more double scanning, in excess of £23!

Had to go to customer service for refund to husband's debit card. Assistant there didn't bat an eyelid, didn't want to check anything and refunded amount in record time. We thought she must be used to providing double scan refunds at this time of year. If we hadn't checked, we'd be nearly £50 out of pocket!!!

Just another shopper trying keep the cost of living to the cost of living, and not unnecessarily adding to the profits of the supermarket!

Keep 'em peeled...👀

The bar really has been set on the floor for some men, hasn't it. Despite having a penis the clever boy managed to pack some bags without whining about having to perform this heroic and staggeringly mundane act of adulting.

No, he didn’t pack bags. OP was very clear she did that because ‘experience’. He just put things from a trolley onto the belt then tapped his credit card. I bet he wasn’t involved in putting stuff in the trolley either. Except maybe choosing men’s stuff like whisky, I guess.

Imjustlikeyou2 · 23/12/2024 19:16

Yeah Lidl are awful for this, they put codes in by hand for fresh fruit/veg items. If I recall correctly the code for cucumber is 33 but if they don’t press enter it charges you for 33x the next item they scan… I noticed but god knows if I’ve been over charged before not noticing!

FeegleFrenzy · 23/12/2024 19:15

Rudicoolcat · 23/12/2024 18:31

Not madly busy, except for the chattering 😆 and £50 worth of double scanning doesn't seem genuine, hence the sly...

But it’s of no benefit to her so I don’t really think the sly label is fitting. She won’t get to keep the £50. 🤷‍♀️

Differentstarts · 23/12/2024 19:14

Just be mindful that not only is it busier then normal but shops also hire Christmas temps so more mistakes are likely to happen. Also when it's busy computer systems start failing more. I don't see why a cashier would purposely double scan your shopping they don't work on commission they get paid the exact same either way

Shimmyshimmyshimmy · 23/12/2024 19:14

He's 66!! In his own words on the way there he said he would be dutifully paying for Christmas!!

eh? Who cares if he’s 26, 66 or 86?

I'm not praising him, just acknowledging to myself that my years of investment have paid of

this is really fucking depressing. You’ve invested years of your life to get your husband to load the shopping without complaining and then pay for it? Do you not have money?

mumda · 23/12/2024 19:13

More card offers not working and they're giving 10% discount.

I'd ring up and complain but you are likely to be in a queue.

ATuinTheGreat · 23/12/2024 19:12

So you wouldn’t be able to spend “his” money if he wasn’t there, doing you such a favour by “dutifully paying for Christmas”?

Your relationship sounds unbearable if you’re grateful for what he’s done (for you?) today.

SIL worked at B and Q. She used to get her family coming through the tills and she would just pretend to scan items so they got them free. If someone scanned through some luxury items twice, another person could pick them up and nobody would be any the wiser when it came to a stock take or checking tills.

You are not allowed to have a nice husband and describe his nice ways. Not in the spirit OP!!

Indeed!! My nice husband is sitting with a nice glass of spirit and enjoying the nice comments 🤣🤣

Oh it gets worse 🤢🤢🤢

CatMum27 · 23/12/2024 19:08

In the long ago pre-Covid times when staffed tills were more the norm I had regular issues with small things I knew I hadn’t purchased appearing on my bill - bars of chocolate, chewing gum and other sweets mainly. I was very good at budgeting in those days and these were all things I wouldn’t buy. It happened about once a month on average, I was given refunds and nothing was ever proven but it does make you wonder. Small items, not normally noticed money wise and often for purchase next to the till. I’ve since switched supermarkets and mostly self scan.

Of course, mistakes happen and Morrisons has had widely acknowledged problems today but it always pays to double check. Supermarkets would (rightly) be annoyed if you tried to get away with taking items you hadn’t paid for.

Getting my popcorn out for this one! 😆 🍿

What is so brilliant about a man loading the conveyor belt, and taking out his wallet to pay for the shopping? Confused

Does your husband 'help you with housework' too @Rudicoolcat Is he 'good' like this?

.

Edited

Congratulations that man for doing his part for the household shop! It's only right he should be eating /using items purchased so make sure you share with him OP.

Well this is weird 🤨 the 'dutiful' and 'uncomplaining' husband who loads the conveyor with shopping. Isn't he wonderful 🤢. I didn't realise it was the 1950s.

ViaRia01 · 23/12/2024 19:06

Definitely worth the public service announcement, thank you.

im not sure it was necessarily sly though as for the cashier to benefit from this she’d also have to somehow get the money or the items out of the shop without being caught.

on a similar note, I was once almost scammed by a cashier at a train station supermarket- late at night, after a few drinks, bought a few items and the cashier “accidentally” added £50 cash back to my bill!! So glad I noticed but I can imagine how lots of people might not when rushing for a train etc.

caringcarer · 23/12/2024 19:03

The worker was probably not focused enough if chattering to another person at the same time. It was probably not done on purpose because the cashier would not benefit. Good to watch your receipt though.

This whole thread is now going to become a discussion about what you meant by 'sly' in this context, and how it can possibly benefit the cashier.

You could try getting MNHQ to change 'sly' to 'sloppy' or 'random' or 'distracted'. But then you'll just get another wave of people reminding you that cashiers are just people too, mistakes happen, what about all those sneaky bastards scanning the Prosecco and sticking the Champagne in their Waitrose shopping bag, etc, etc.

SapphireOpal · 23/12/2024 19:00

Why don't you just use your own card to pay for it and leave him at home? So many couples in the shops today getting in everyone's way where one person would sufficed.

Actually worked at Tesco. There are perks to having the largest "spends" at your till. It gets noted by Managers and goee in your favour for bonuses etc.

HermioneWeasley · 23/12/2024 18:58

OP are you honestly suggesting that Morrisons has given instructions to all its thousands of cashiers to double scan items and see what they can get away with? I mean, it would be a scandal, someone would have gone to the press.

SheWaits · 23/12/2024 18:57

Just use the handheld thing and scan stuff yourself as you go round. Problem solved.

cariadlet · 23/12/2024 18:57

I get that it's annoying and it pays to check receipts but describing the cashier as being sly for making a mistake is ridiculous.

A supermarket cashier is not going to benefit from double scanning.
