Sly extra spending at Morrisons (insert other supermarket as preferred)

Just a heads up for folks to keep their eyes on the cashier whilst packing up your Christmas big shop into bags.

Husband was brilliant in loading the conveyor with big shop and dutifully stood uncomplaining with wallet in hand to pay.

I took on the packing duty, (seasoned experience applies) and we had us all done in due course. Cashier certainly did not rush, chatting to her colleague about their breakfast....

Anyway, when we were told the total by the cashier I asked her to double check as I was sure I'd seen her double scan a bottle of champagne. Prefuse apologies received, machine checked and double scan hastily removed. Husband then happily paid.

Before leaving the till area a quick scan of the receipt showing more double scanning, in excess of £23!

Had to go to customer service for refund to husband's debit card. Assistant there didn't bat an eyelid, didn't want to check anything and refunded amount in record time. We thought she must be used to providing double scan refunds at this time of year. If we hadn't checked, we'd be nearly £50 out of pocket!!!

Just another shopper trying keep the cost of living to the cost of living, and not unnecessarily adding to the profits of the supermarket!

Keep 'em peeled...👀

Ummm... in what world does this merit praise? Presumably you wouldn't expect to be described as 'brilliant' for putting things on a supermarket conveyor belt and handing over a credit card without complaining? Why would he complain? I assume the food is for him too? Confused

Pretty sure this is tongue in cheek

Come on. If a cashier is double scanning £50 worth of items they shouldn't be in the job.
One is an error. More in one order is utter incompetence or intentional

Thevelvelletes · 24/12/2024 07:59

The technology to catch stealing from tills will obviously be far superior than 20 years ago and tills are CCTV monitored.

poetryandwine · 24/12/2024 07:55

AnotherDunromin · 23/12/2024 20:09

I used to work in a supermarket as a teenager. If it was quiet, I would sometimes double scan things. Then, after the customer had paid and left, I would void one of the duplicate items and pocket the cash from the till. So to anyone looking through the transactions, it looked like I had accidentally double scanned, the customer had paid, then one of us had noticed my "error", which I had dutifully rectified. I'd be £10 or 15 richer by the end of the shift, and my till would never be short.
That was 20 years ago, mind, so I'm sure the technology on the tills has changed and I guess most people pay by card these days anyway. But it's not beyond the realms of possibility that supermarket workers have figured out a way tto play the system and to personally benefit from ripping off customers.
And yes, I realise this was an abhorrent thing to do. I must have stolen from people from every walk of life - people who were wealthy, and people who were struggling. I can't justify or excuse it. I'm just saying it's possible that similar is still going on.

More recently than this, an undergraduate has told me the same and also about the double merchandise trick of a PP ( the extra champagne). Possibly that is why it is done.

Thanks, OP. I am sorry you’ve come in for snark for an informative post.

I wonder what's special about being 66 that means he can't help.

Df would be packing very carefully, and will be cooking their dinner, and he's 78.
Dh did the shopping with dd1 and unpacked it all when he came home and he's 50.

Obviously there must be an incompetent lull in between those ages where they're incapable of doing anything.

All that ham is really bad for him. It’s not so much cold meat, it’s processed meat and it massively increases chance of cancer.

The man is slowly dying let him eat his sandwiches

SoySaucy · 24/12/2024 07:09

Definitely not on the same scale, but in Aldi yesterday we had two items double scanned when I checked the receipt (£3.99 big multipack of crisps and a £0.98p pack of salami) 😂

Still annoyed me despite not being a huge amount, food is expensive without being charged for items you don’t have!

But she won’t have a receipt for it and they’re subjected to random bag checks.

Also have to be an idiot to lose your job for £23.It would have purely been a mistake nothing more.

Tesco have had new systems put in this year and that has included new checkout software I would say that this level of double scanning is the result of the feedback sound not being loud enough or not directed to the operator so they aren’t hearing it go through rather than any ‘sly’ behaviour.

Babbahabba · 24/12/2024 06:27

@RedRiverShore5 because I live a two minute drive from the supermarket and it's more time efficient to go myself than do it online then wait in the house at a certain time-slot. I get what you mean, I hate shopping & if I lived further away I'd probably get a delivery. Plus I don't like getting substitutions.

CactusUmbrella · 24/12/2024 06:21

This was the most weirdly written OP I've seen in a long time. Genuinely thought it could be a troll post but based on the updates I assume the OP was just trying (and failing) to be funny. Cringe.

Babbahabba · 23/12/2024 22:36

I use the self scanner and pack as I go. So much quicker and more convenient. Not a clue why anyone uses the old style system.

You could just get it all delivered and let others do the leg work, why would you do the scanning when you can get it delivered to your door.

Old style system...? You mean actually being served by a human, in a customer service environment?

Fuck the self service tills. Unless the number of items I have is a number I can physically carry in my hands, I will go to a manned checkout.

Babbahabba · 23/12/2024 22:45

Well it would suit the op who suspects skullduggery as the reason for items being double scanned 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes it's weird to start claiming bits of other people's bodies as your own

I don't think she's claiming his penis as hers, but that it's a prince.

Perhaps it resembles

....he his mine, and so is his penis! 🤣🤣

What have I just read.?! 😆 Why would you say this? And no, his penis is not yours! It's his! How would you feel if your 'hero husband' went onto a mens forum and told the men on there that your vagina is HIS.

Why you think any other poster on here would be interested in your husband's penis? Confused

This thread is weird, and your last post (at 19.56) is very strange! Why all the personal and intimate information? And why the horrific attacks on hard working low paid shop staff?! Confused

The 'born in the 50s' husband is only 5 years older than Brad Pitt, who I don't think we'd write off as a little old man doing well to get things out of a trolley.

Usually on here anyone over about 50 is ready for downsizing to retirement flats.

diehardfirst · 23/12/2024 21:37

Rudicoolcat · 23/12/2024 19:56

Okay, for all the comments getting personal, not sure why its relevant but we don't have children together. I wasn't able to and his daughter died three years ago, leaving him a grandson.

He took early retirement because he could afford to 10 years ago but because he nearly died and had to have emergency heart surgery last summer, yes everything this Christmas is brilliant. Even loading the bloody conveyor belt at the supermarket!

Of course I have my own money, my own job which i adore, and will be retiring soon.

We thought the underhanded manner of the young uninterested cashier at 10.20 this morning in a not particularly busy supermarket was worth noting as she tried to overcharge us by £50. Sly as in mischievous and unusual is the definition I was inferring. Her sloppiness is costing other people their hard earned money. Not everyone can afford to be loosing such amounts.

If everyone can get over the issue that I have a traditional husband born in the 1950's who, incidentally, worked his whole life, paid off the mortgage, pays all the bills, and continues pulling his weight equally in our marriage with everything (housework included now) then all the better.

To some people's absolute horror, he has the audacity to still want to open the car door for me, helps me with my coat, walks on the outside of the pavement, and have a supper ready for me when I get home late from work. He may not be your ideal, your prince among men, but he his mine, and so is his penis! 🤣🤣

The end!
