The burden of being a man

"Men will give up their happiness for their families but women will give up their families for their happiness."

My DH explaining the burden of being a man to me this morning.

OP posts:

Aw, bless his sweet little deluded heart.

CheekyHobson · 22/12/2024 17:16

Like a pp I know of a single solitary mother who fucked off and left her children with their father. I am 51. It was the mother who used to live next to us when I was about 12. She left her husband and children and moved to NZ to follow her dream of being an artist.

I also only know of one such situation - my boyfriend's ex-wife, who moved overseas without her primary-aged child, leaving him as a solo dad. They had been separated for a handful of years at that point - he instigated the divorce - and were co-parenting pretty evenly up until then.

NunyaBeeswax · 22/12/2024 17:16

Sadly, it is my experience that it's more like:

"men will forget their families for their cock, women will give up their happiness for a cock head"

Downinthecellar · 22/12/2024 17:15

Urgh, men who project the whole ‘unhappily married man’ trope gross me out.

No one MADE you get married and have kids!

If you wanted to remain single you could have! It’s so insulting to the women they’re with.

When I got engaged a man at work said to me “did you force him to propose?” 😂😂😂 I thought that said a lot on his view of marriage even it it was a ‘joke’.

Pieandchips999 · 22/12/2024 17:12

Has he had a knock on the head?

Boardingschoolmumoftwo · 22/12/2024 17:11

How does he cope with both his brain cells poor pet must be confusing for him

Well the percentage of single mothers to single fathers is 84% to 16% so there is a clear gender bias.

Biased yes, specific no. Like I said I know males and females who have done this.

unsync · 22/12/2024 17:10

Maybe he should take a quick spin through the Relationship board here, and see how many of those women are happy.

katter · 22/12/2024 17:07

Well Peppa Pig is hardly the epitome of the best family values - so perhaps that's got something to do with his comment! 🤔
Being utterly selfish when it comes to leaving your families isn't gender specific anyway. I've known women and men who have chosen their own happiness over their DCs.

AbigailsPartyFrock · 22/12/2024 17:06

I’ve always wanted to know- what’s it like being married to an idiot, OP?

bifurCAT · 22/12/2024 17:05

I think this comment is based upon two often misquoted 'facts'. At the very least, it shows some nativity.

  1. Women statistically have always been more likely to instigate divorce. Depending on the source and country, this ranges from about 60% to over 90%. This, if taken on its own, 'implies' women (especially if leaving for another man) are more willing to leave a family than stay faithful, stick it through, etc. Obviously, there are MANY other factors at play here that would skew this (e.g., DV).
  1. Men are more likely to be the providers. Obviously, men can't have kids, and childcare is usually always delegated to women, so this again, if taken on its own 'looks' like men are giving up time with their family and kids to go work. This will, of course, result in the man feeling he has given up so much for his family. Again, many caveats, like many men will insist on this dynamic!

HollyKnight · 22/12/2024 16:29

True. The world is full of men raising children on their own after their wives have fucked off for a different life.

Hilarious that he said that I agree!

Like a pp I know of a single solitary mother who fucked off and left her children with their father. I am 51. It was the mother who used to live next to us when I was about 12. She left her husband and children and moved to NZ to follow her dream of being an artist.

The fact I recall the specific details means it was such a rarefied event it stood out in my mind. Oddly enough I was talking on the phone to my parents last week and they asked if I recalled 'Sue' because they and bumped into the now adult daughter and her children and my parents wondered if Sue even knew she had grandkids.

I could not even begin to count the numbers of men I know, work with, once upon a time dated, am related to, or met in the course of normal life over the years who have done the same.

Richiewoo · 22/12/2024 16:59

Biggest loads of bollocks I've heard all year!!

CheekyHobson · 22/12/2024 16:55

Is this some sad-sack way of saying that men will stoically plod on in unhappy marriages for the sake of the “family” staying together whereas women are more likely to ask for a divorce if they are unhappy?

As women initiate more divorces, I assume this is true to some degree, even if women tend to end up doing a larger share of the childcare after divorce.

Men also tend to receive more relationship services in a marriage, so it’s not just about “keeping the family together”, it’s really more that men receive a lot of benefits from marriage that makes it worth staying. I also think there’s an element of shame involved, ie many men know that post-divorce it’s going to be perfectly fucking obvious who really looks after the family.

I am sorry, this is the other way round!

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 22/12/2024 16:50

@Boomboombooo back to front!!! just need to have a look on here to see the number of men who have abandoned their families to get their leg over with someone else and be happy!! nearly always the women left holding the children!

I had to read that three times just to make sure I'd comprehended it correctly.

He's living on Planet Cuckoo, obviously.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 22/12/2024 16:47

A definite reverse.

Oldnproud · 22/12/2024 16:47

Has he been reading women's magazines and got confused over his sex? I'm honestly struggling to find any explanation for how he could be so deluded!

Vaxtable · 22/12/2024 16:45

I hope you told him he’s got it the wrong way round

PandoraSox · 22/12/2024 16:44

Are you a new poster Andrew @Boomboombooo or just name changed for this?
