To think that Xmas food shopping isn't a sodding family day out?

Just been to M&S for final food shop and the bloody place was over run with entire families shopping together. Just why? If the kids are old enough to be left then they shouldn't be traipsing around and getting in the way when the place is crowded as it is at this time of year.

And as for people who can't drive the right way round a one way car park: kindly fuck off and don't drive if you can't follow road signs.

That's all. Now can someone please pass the 🍷

@LePetitMaman they were in the fucking way everywhere! And they were clearly old enough to be left at home.

Maybe it was you in their way? People want to be with their families at Christmas.

@loveawineloveacrisp I 💯 agree and just cannot understand it unless people genuinely have no alternative. But you’ll get a million responses about disability, SEN, teaching kids to budget and that some families enjoy it - fair enough the first 2 but for the other 2 - not a chance!

Im going at 10pm tonight for the last bits - have all the essentials so if I don’t get it tonight- it ain’t happening!

Don't they close at 4 on a Sunday?

Husband is a butcher so have to take the kids with me because he's got a 60+ hour work week. 🙄

Zeborah · 22/12/2024 17:23

I could of written this having arrived home from M&S at 15:00 with the exact same thoughts

You're going tonight? It's Sunday.

Yip. 3 24 hour Asda within driving distance - good old Scotland!

@LePetitMaman I have grown up kids. And I specifically said in my post if the kids are old enough to be left at home then they should be.

Yes but that in itself will depend on the person. Each parent will have a very definition of what is old enough to be at home.

Bluevelvetsofa · 22/12/2024 17:19

DH used to have his own business and Christmas was 12 hour days, so there was no choice but to take the children, before the days of online.

I wish people wouldn’t park trolleys so that no one can get to the shelves. That, and children running around loose, is annoying. I feel sorry for the staff though. I’d probably be tetchy with customers.

9GreenBottles · 22/12/2024 17:19

My Facebook memories show that I have commented on this several years running so you are definitely not being unreasonable 😀

DP offered to come with me to the supermarket last night. I know how much of an obstacle he creates standing in the middle of aisles looking gormless so I declined. He did have to help bringing everything in from the car and putting it away though.

I once was nearly decked by a woman who had brought her teenage daughter Christmas food shopping and they were blocking a very crowded aisle. My face had said something that my mouth did not 😳

The kids aren't the issue, it's other adults! Taking up 2 spots with their SUV when people are driving around looking for parking spots, stopping in the middle of the aisles for a chat, parking their trolley in front of a Christmas necessity e.g. gravy and then walking off down the aisle, taking ages to decide if they want a product whilst it is clear you are trying to get to that product and they are just totally oblivious.

I just move their trolley if it's unattended

The OP is spending money.

The child is not spending money, they are just there as an appendage to the customer.

Would have thought that was obvious but clearly not.

I reckon supermarkets quite like it when people bring kids along!! I’m sure that the parents end up spending more money. M&S didn’t invent Percy Pigs for nothing ;) Conversely, I expect supermarkets hate organised people with lists who have a clear plan and never deviate from it. Where’s the extra profit be made in that 🤣

KeepScrapingBy · 22/12/2024 17:14

Well it costs as much as a family day out so maybe people think let’s bring the whole family and take our time 🤷‍♀️

Mickey79 · 22/12/2024 17:11

It’s the other adults who get on my nerves in shops, not children.

Roselilly36 · 22/12/2024 17:10

We were daft enough to go into M&S today, it was mental, no trolley’s available, queuing all round the store, car park was rammed, we left without spending a penny, went down the road to Tesco, what a difference, their was a wonderful brass band playing, parked easily, bought what we needed. Came home, we would have still been queuing in M&S!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/12/2024 17:10

Maybe the kids want to choose?
Maybe the parents are trying to get the kids engaged in preparing meals?
Maybe the kids wanted to come?
My teens are in charge of puddings.

leafybrew · 22/12/2024 17:10

In total agreement with the OP!!

Plus thank you for the tip off as I’m hoping this means M and S won’t be rammed in Xmas Eve 🧑‍🎄🥂. Nb. No one go then please 😀😜

Onthefarsideoftheworld · 22/12/2024 17:08

My local Sainsbury’s…..Scotland…. is open till 11pm

TheKeatingFive · 22/12/2024 17:07

If you can't cope with other people in shops, do your shopping online. Simple.

Is anywhere open at 10pm on a Sunday?

JetskiSkyJumper · 22/12/2024 17:05

Why not if they want to? Just because you and some others don't like it? Online shop if it bothers you so much.

thebbt · 22/12/2024 17:05

I was in M&S today with DH and my two DD. It is one of the few times of the year we all go shopping and everyone picks out what they would like and has a proper look around the shop. Both girls picked out things I wouldn't have necessarily picked out for them and was so excited to be in the hussle and bustle. Two different people commented on how well behaved they were.

It's Christmas! Stop being so miserable!

Pickingmyselfup · 22/12/2024 17:04

Personally I hate taking both of mine shopping but one on one isn't so bad. I take them both if I need to but it's not an enjoyable experience. I would much rather leave one or both at home with the husband (and soon by themselves) than deal with them but sometimes needs must. It's not often we shop as a 4, maybe if we are on holiday and need to do a shop for the week or just nip in for something but usually one of us would stay in the car with the kids whilst the other ran in.

My childhood was spent traipsing round the supermarket or round town every Saturday and I often wonder what the point was. It wasn't the best of experiences for anybody.
