Wtf? It's not that serious because no-one was killed? And he said this more than once in the interview.

Incroyable. Putain !

He's apologised, according to Le Monde, but still.

all generalisations are stupid.

Most are. Because when you compare two populations and say "LOOK it's like..." the populations turn out to be remarkably similar. The ones that always pop up are, "it's like saying Muslims are terrorists". Or "it's like saying Black people are criminal".

When you break those down, and look at who commits crimes and terrorist acts, and you correct for social group and demographics, it's clearly cobblers. People in those two groups are normally roughly the same. You take the kid who is radicalised, or the kid who is offending, you give them different influences, different upbringings, chances are they won't do the act.

But in every society, in every time, in every place, in every single spot on earth, men are much more dangerous and violent than women. Horribly, in pretty much every one, the most dangerous person is the woman's intimate male partner. Also for children, the most dangerous person in their life? Male family member.

There is no comparison between the male population and the female one. None. Women who sexually offend or kill are total outliers, statistical anomalies. Men who sexually offend are very very common. When you ask the right questions, in the right way, a very large proportion of men will admit that they would rape.

And Gisele proved it. Unconscious, no witness, men did it. Because they thought they wouldn't get caught.

Just as an aside, Gisele has also made many women much safer. Some of the convicted were also DV abusers and had offended before. She has probably saved lives.

A NAMALT comment is a valid response to an All Men Are Like That Comment.
If people don't want to see NAMALT comments, and I do understand why, then people should't say things like, "He was a man. What else did you expect?"

For the love of fuck, can you maybe not jump in to defend men on a thread like this?

What do you get out of it? They don't think any better of you for it you know.

all generalisations are stupid.
It's not defending men - who couldn't care less about a random MN poster - to simply point out that they are not a different species, and there's no "them" vs "us".

What's next? You hear about teen mothers found guilty of killing baby and hiding the body, so you start asking what's wrong with teen mothers? Again, stupid generalisation that would make no sense. That's literally how racists mind work by the way.

There are shit human beings everywhere, but there are also caring ones who help, and who are as horrified as you are about this story.

It's so boring, predictable and completely pointless and unhelpful to start ranting against "men".

Smallsalt · 22/12/2024 23:46

Just as these rapists don't prove anything about men in general.
They prove that they are weak and evil men.
If a man was to make such sweeping generalisations about " all women" you would combust.

Almost all women 18-24 (97%) have experienced sexual harrasment.
Just making a sweeping generalisation.
Assuming those are not all the same guys there has to be a high number of men doing these things.
Not your Nigel though.

Smallsalt · 22/12/2024 23:46

niadainud · 22/12/2024 19:19

The point, if you could look beyond the end of your nose for a moment, is that far, far too many men are scummy potential rapists and wife beaters, that even the ones who aren't quite that scummy are often pretty damn scummy, and that there are enough of them out there that we can't have any confidence that it isn't, in fact, all of them, even if your son is one of the few exceptions - which he may or may not be as he's hardly likely to come running to tell you if he has ever treated a woman badly, is he?

And even if your son is pure as the driven snow and a better person than Jesus Christ himself, it doesn't prove anything about men in general.

Just as these rapists don't prove anything about men in general.
They prove that they are weak and evil men.
If a man was to make such sweeping generalisations about " all women" you would combust.

What is to be gained by making this "all men" and not "these men". Why let these men off the hook?

Its no more justified than blaming all black people for because some black people commit crime or blaming all women for crimes committed by some women ( yes women commit crime too).

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/12/2024 23:25

A lot of the wives stood by their husbands. I remember reading about the mayor saying this months ago.

niadainud · 22/12/2024 23:14

GCAcademic · 22/12/2024 23:06

No doubt many of the wives and mothers of the men who raped Gisele Pelicot also thought that their Nigel wasn't like that either.

Bet there are a lot more wondering about it now this case has hit the headlines.

@MrsTerryPratchett I like your NAMALT chart though maybe it should also have a special mention for arseholes. Like the Mayor of Mazan.

Not All Mayors Are Like That? 🤔

Well if he isn't he's probably friends with one.
I always wondered about women living in the area where Gisele Pelicot lived. How could you trust your husband, your son if there are so many unknown perpetrators among them.
If I was a single women I would probably move elsewhere.

It didn't happen in Mazan because there is an unusually high proportion of potential rapists there. It happened because Mazan has the same proportion of would-be rapists as everywhere else.

There are so many categories it misses. Like 'men who would if they could get away with it' 'men who say nothing about 9 yos marrying or Afghani women not being able to laugh or speak' and others.

It's so depressing.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 22/12/2024 21:09

Anyone who NAMALTS's the Gisele Pelicot case, really REALLY needs to check themselves.

Please don't tar all men as scummy.
Lately it seems as if all men are monsters, the evidence is certainly there for a lot of them but not all. There are some fantastic ones out there (and in my life)

That's not the point FF's sake!!!

Sarkyandcynical · 22/12/2024 20:52

As I read elsewhere on the internet today (to paraphrase @ ginamartin)

“Not all men.
But at least 72 men in a 50km radius who assaulted Gisele Pelicot.
Plus the few who knew about it, came to view her unconscious and chose not to commit assault, but also did nothing to report it or stop it.
Plus the thousands who viewed the requests he posted on line and did nothing to stop it.
And the tens of thousands who watched the abuse online.
Not all men, but too fucking many”

Iaminthefly · 22/12/2024 20:22

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud There are very few men in my circle nowadays. Mainly because the vast majority of men I've met in my life have been disappointing human beings

NAMALT

Mayor of Mazan (Gisèle Pelicot)
MrsTerryPratchett · 22/12/2024 19:57

You only need to look at what happens when men are allowed to do anything. War for example. NAMALT but a disturbingly high number of them are.

GelatoPistacchio · 22/12/2024 19:47

Decent blokes don't feel the need to centre themselves in this story with a 'not all men' line and don't want or ask for women to defend them with this line either.

They are secure enough not to be offended and understand this is a massive problem within their sex.

katter · 22/12/2024 19:36

DiaAssolellat · 22/12/2024 19:32

But Mazan could be any town. Anywhere, in any country.

I think not knowing the rapists among us makes people probably feel safer.

You are clearly the one who needs perspective as you seem unable to recognise the prevalence of violence against women and girls perpetrated by men, because you have a son. Rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence are ubiquitous and that doesn’t change because you put your fingers in your ears and shout ‘not all men!!!!’ We need to be recognising and preventing this behaviour, not wasting time defending men who are not in the position of needing defense. Men are inherently privileged and misuse their power, hence the widespread violence perpetrated by them.

It is ignorant and in exceptionally poor taste to come on a thread such as this one and repeatedly bleat on about NAMALT, as if what Gisele has experienced is a one off rarity. Yes what her husband and those ‘men’ did was absolutely vile, but sadly so many women will have experienced sexual abuse/ domestic violence / trauma by men. We do not need to hear that not ALL men are abusers because we obviously know this. But too MANY are.

I have a wonderful husband and a wonderful son. I am even more passionate about this topic because I have a son. NAMALT has no place here.

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud and we'll leave you to your delusion that's there's tons and tons of really good men out there.

There are. Obviously not the same ones in your circle.
