Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

1000 replies

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

Your workplace should make the toilets unisex, especially if people do this anyway. Where is a non binary person meant to go? I know it's just a sign on a door but would take 5 mins to sort.

In the toilet that aligns with their sex! Why should the toilets be changed to suit one person with a belief that no one can define?

Stop this pandering nonsense. If it's 'just a sign on a door' why can't a 'non-binary' person use the toilet no matter what symbol is there?

Unisex toilets are shit. My work has two toilets, male and female. They made them unisex and then were changed back as the women were fed up with the seat always being up and piss on the floor/rim.

But have made it clear that they feel uncomfortable about using the male/female loos so why are you concerned about them using the disabled/baby changing facility?

…..because they are not disabled !!!

What you just said is bullshit the OP dos not say the manager knew .He spoke to his manager but why it’s nothing to do with him . You can insult all you want because u know what I don’t give a shit people should keep there noses out of other peoples business

But the manager clearly knew as they defended the persons use - strongly implying they were aware and in agreement.

I can imagine just what type of person you are…!

Who the fuck tells on someone for using a disabled toilet ,should be doing there job instead of be a little tell tale

"A little tell tale", are you five years old? And it's their job, not there job.

DaringLion · 22/12/2024 19:08

nellythe · 22/12/2024 18:58

Well, firstly, they didn’t ’tell on’ as the manager already knew. They expressed concern to the manager that the manager had given the person permission to use the facilities without actually being disabled.
So I’m not sure what part of that is being a ‘little tell tale’.
Have you always had the comprehension and maturity of a 7 year old child?

I think they’ve chosen the best solution for them - the disabled loo is genuinely unisex, and presumably they’re only in there for a couple of minutes so no big deal. Forcing them to choose a ‘gender’ loo to use seems a bit cruel.

Workplace toilets aren't typically 'gendered' though are they? They are functional rooms containing the necessary for their purpose with one room designated for male sex people, and one for female sex people. There is no special gendered essence floating in the air that could upset a person who doesn't identify as a particular gender.
If the NB colleague was objecting to having to use a ladies powder room with pink velvet sofas, and dodge a woman spraying her with perfume for £2 a spritz, I could kind of see the point. Although they'd be no worse off than any gender non conforming woman who didn't like stereotypical 'girly' spaces. And as a pp pointed out, nipping into any available toilet isn't 'the big deal people think it is'. So not sure why a person's 'gender' prevents them using the toilet for their sex.

They absolutely should be using the toilet allocated for their sex.

I don't think I could bring myself to care really.
They obviously feel they have a disability and maybe they do

Trans is a disability now? A mental health issue probably.

Once again, OP is an employee not a private individual in this situation, therefore ensuring disabled customers/employees are not discriminated against IS her business.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle Again, the statutory definition is of limited relevance. Not sure why you keep harping on it when you've been told this already!

Statutory definition is very much of relevance as that is why they are provided.

Why thank you. I am sympathetic to genuinely disabled persons and would never use their facilities over them, as mentioned I don’t spend hours in there, it’s a quick in and out and I inconvenience no one. It isn’t a zero sum trans vs disabled game, there can be room for both. BTW I have a Bsc, an MSc and speak 2 foreign languages.

No, you’re ignorant to disabled people and have zero clue.
You DO inconvenience people but are too pig-headed to be able to see that.

Well done on your academic achievements. It’s a shame you didn’t take a course in how to be a functioning member of society - you may have learned some emotional intelligence. Again, you’re lacking intelligence and morals.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 22/12/2024 18:43

Why don't you two stop being cowards and just say what you really want to say, you use the word mutilated for a very clear and obvious reason, just because you try to use "science" and such to justify your argument doesn't mean it works on people who aren't transphobic, what you mean isn't as veiled as you think it is.

What is it that you think I want to say? I was perfectly clear.

Lmao, my homophobic cause? lololol

How ironic since I'm literally part of a lgbt community full of gays and lesbians and they don't buy your nonsense.

You're a riot my dude, since it's not my cause, I'm simply not a bigot, all you said are the same old cliche anti trans drivel used for years, and guess what? These arguments didn't work yesterday, don't work today, won't work tomorrow.

Stay mad, stay losing, trans are here to stay no matter how much you scream about it, be prepared to be disappointed for the rest of your life because you won't win.

It is perhaps no surprise, given your echo chamber, that you don’t follow court cases either.

Great news puberty blockers have been banned. Or did that never happen?

I wouldn’t bother if I was you. The poster you’re responding to clearly has deep rooted resentment around those with disabilities. And/or is so intent in protecting the preferences of a group, who sees themselves as neither male or female, that they are happy to be repeatedly offensive & ignorant towards and actively take away the safe spaces of those with disabilities. The poster is an idiot and isn’t on the moral, or intellectual, high ground that they think.

Why thank you. verysmellyjelly · 22/12/2024 18:41

@TheGander Of course you're going to carry on. You are ableist and do not care about the rights of disabled people. This is the default position and it surprises me when someone does not hold this stance.

Tsama · 22/12/2024 18:39

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 22/12/2024 18:35

Gay people never demanded others lie to uphold their fantasy, gay people never sought to destroy women’s rights or take disabled facilities, gay people never sterilised children, gay people never attempted to steal women’s language, gay people are not disproportionately represented amongst sex offenders, gay people never campaigned to give children harmful unlicensed and irreversible drugs, or to carry out surgeries on children. Stop appropriating gay people to your homophobic cause.

Lmao, my homophobic cause? lololol
