Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

1000 replies

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

you don’t know what you are talking about. Please don’t brainwash your daughter with wrong and discriminatory information about a minority group.
Trans people don’t need to be “cured” of being trans. It’s perfectly fine for them to be trans . The problem isn’t them.

Edited

Did you understand what I wrote? That gender dysphoria is a mental health issue. Someone who is 'trans' will not be cured of their dysphoria by transitioning, just as someone with anorexia is not cured of anorexia by withholding food as they desire.
Trans people are asking to be cured by becoming what they think they are. But they are not that thing (a member of the opposite sex) and we would do better to counsel them and discover the origin of their dysphoria so that it can at least be made bearable. That may mean dressing as the opposite sex. It cannot mean entering the opposite sex's spaces, places, prizes, refuges, prisons, hospital wards etc. The solution is third spaces.

@whoputallofthatthere OP has said they don't consider themselves disabled.

Yes but the point of my post was that people don't always talk to these things about their colleagues. Maybe they do have a condition, and they just don't want to divulge it to OP so they've given another reason for using the facilities?

Or, most likely they don't. But we shouldn't be too quick to judge people using disabled facilities just because they don't "look" like they need them.

There are no properly peer reviewed studies that support a gender spectrum. Gender is a social construct all about social expectations.

I had this same conversation with my DD yesterday. You cannot change sex. Sex is not a state of mind. Same and opposite sex attraction is a real thing. The mental illness of gender dysphoria - thinking you are in the wrong body is a crude way of explaining it - is real. But having gender dysphoria is not cured by transitioning. We do not cure annorexia by allowing someone to starve themselves to death, we do not cure body dysphoria where a person insists that a limb must be removed by removing the limb. Gender dysphoria is of the same ilk.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 22/12/2024 20:51

Also OP's boss can't know if the person has a disability..

Maybe he called her transphobic because she singled out a nonbinary coworker.

I mean... Given this is an imaginary scenario by an op obsessed with toilets for disabled people, it feels silly to try and reach deeper into what she said.

Grammarnut · 22/12/2024 20:49

Tsama · 22/12/2024 17:54

@Grammarnut
Sexual orientation is not a choice.

According to many people it is lol

Being trans/non-binary may be, unless it's the thing we are not allowed to mention on MN.

Nobody wakes up and decide to be trans, who would ever choose to have a life of presecution that can end with them being beaten or even murdered at some point?

People who think someone "chooses" to be trans for attention literally don't understand how being trans is, because vast majority of trans don't want attention to themselves, they get attention because majority goes through transition late in life and inevitably can't pass as the opposite sex most of the time, which gives them a life of persecution, humilation, and suffering.

People don't choose to be trans because it's somehow "fun" or "trendy", they're like that due to gender dysphoria and some other things.

Just like with gays many in the past tried to "cure" them and make them live as their birth sex, didn't work just like it didn't work with curing gays, so the approach was changed

Trouble is, if you can ID as non-binary, there must be a binary to be 'non'. So sex is binary, yes?

Sex is binary, gender isn't, been many years that more and more people who work with biology, psychology and so on push the concept that sex and gender are two separate things.

There's literally studies about it, the idea of gender being separate from sex isn't even new, it existed for decades now, only thing that happened is that understanding of it advanced and changed.

You’re a fucking rude arrogant person ,someone insults you and you pull the I’m disabled card ,but you insult my grammar all you want because I do nt care

Tbf you steamed in and insulted the OP in the first instance.

There were 350 trans people murdered in 2024.
No, there are not more trans people who murder than are murdered. Majority were under 25. Violence again trans people has increased by four times in the last year.

And the majority of these were Latin American sex workers. The risks they face don't remotely correlate to the UK or Europe.
I also suspect that most of the murders were homophobic in origin.

Tandora · 22/12/2024 20:48

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline.

Reasonable response.

I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

you were.

Honestly OP let your colleague relieve themself in peace. I just can’t imagine being such a busy body that you felt the need to raise this with your boss.

Yeah we all know that stat. Pretty much all in Brazil where murder of anyone is endemic and murder of prostitutes even higher. Trans are less likely to murdered than an ordinary bog standard woman. Don't try that

Don't try what?

Someone said there were more trans murderers than trans people murdered.

That's incorrect.

No need to be rude during this conversation.

Yeah you are. Disabled people use tools because of their disability. Someone who tells you they are disabled and that they have to use speech to text, means they don't do it through choice. Your 'clever' remarks are plain abusive. But that's par for the course in trans activism..steam roll anyone in your way eh? Everyone is fair game

Don't rely on a grammar and spellchecker - they are frequently wrong because they do not take into account the sense.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/12/2024 17:38

Urinary and bowel problems aren't visible. The OP has no way of knowing this person isn't affected by something of that nature.

The person in question IDs as non-binary and this is why they do not want to use the toilet appropriate to their sex. They have not said they have any other problems. Most women over the age of 45 have urinary problems, e.g. they can no longer hold urine very well (hence the market for heavy duty 'panti-liners') so they should have access to disabled toilets, presumably. Just going off piste there.
