Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

1000 replies

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

The evidence supporting gender affirming type care is thin or non existent.... Even the New York Times can't hide it ....

U.S. Study on Puberty Blockers Goes Unpublished Because of Politics, Doctor Says

www.nytimes.com/2024/10/23/science/puberty-blockers-olson-kennedy.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

"The researchers followed the children for two years to see if the treatments improved their mental health. An older Dutch study had found that puberty blockers improved well-being, results that inspired clinics around the world to regularly prescribe the medications as part of what is now called gender-affirming care.

But the American trial did not find a similar trend, Dr. Olson-Kennedy said in a wide-ranging interview. Puberty blockers did not lead to mental health improvements, she said, most likely because the children were already doing well when the study began."

Nobody who knows anything about this area of medicine should expect PBs to improve mental wellbeing in a way that can be measured through this sort of trial . It’s a nonsense . The only purpose of PBs is to place a temporary pause on changes associated with puberty to give children a little more time.
Also Olson is right in what she says here because children who are properly supported do generally do well and if they start PBs at tanner stage 2 do not have to suffer the terrible dysphoria that can be caused by consent of endogenous puberty.

Non-binary is an oxymoron.

I'm disabled myself, on two counts. Also I used to work in the field of disability so I understand the provisions of the law. Adapted toilets are not for the sole use of disabled people. They are adapted to make it possible for disabled people to use them, for example by having wider doors so wheelchairs can get through, grab rails to hold on to, levers to turn taps on and off with and emergency cords.

What's interesting is that almost every adaptation for disabled people benefits people who are not disabled. What is a pity is that more toilets are not adapted for disabled people. It shouldn't be just one cubicle or room. Where I used to work, everyone used the adapted toilets because they offered greater privacy and adequate space. The building was badly designed, in terms of toilets.

This is not entirely correct. It's true adapted toilets can be used by anyone. The law doesn't need to sharply delineate who can and can't use them, but assumes - as in most areas of life - that they will be used by people who need this adaptations. Disabled loos are required by law so that disabled people can access loos. They aren't there to be accessed by able bodied people who can use normal loos. The law always assumes people use common sense and common decency in navigating the world. It is common decency to leave adapted toilets for those who need them.

OP did say the non binary colleague is not disabled. True, they may have a disability they don't wish to disclose. But as we have seen on this thread, plenty of people think it's absolutely fine for an able bodied person to occupy the one adapted loo in an establishment because of their gender identity. It's likely then that this colleague feels the same way.

And that’s because what you think you know doesn’t come from your real world experience, but from reading stuff online or listening to events hosted to platform a very particular set of messages/ ideas and persuade people of their agenda.

Edited

So we shouldn’t pay attention to the WPATH standards of care? What about the trans voices at Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre who declared women who have been raped should ‘reframe their trauma’ if they re unhappy sharing spaces with men. Or the violent transactivist who told their followers to punch women? Or the trans protestors drowning out women talking about violence against women at the Filia conference? Or the numerous trans voices totally misrepres3nting the Cass review when a quick glance would prove they never read it? Or the nonbinary men laying claim to disabled toilets?

The problem is we have been listening to trans voices.

Because you are only hearing one side of the story.

@Tandora It's not just what I've read on social media (although that's where I've read details of the butchery that is euphemistically called gender affirming care); I have heard professionals and detransitioners speaking at webinars and conferences.

The disabled toilets are for disabled people. It's nothing to do with anyone's gender. Should we presume you're posting this because you're an ableist?

Listen just because you’ve read something on social media doesn’t make it true.

Talk to trans people in real life. Read some academic and medical research. Study the issue in a real world academic, scientific or clinical setting if you are interested. Otherwise just have fewer opinions.

Anyways, I’m not going to waste my evening on this yet again, It’s just too exhausting.

We’ve tried this. It rarely helps very much at all. What helps is gender affirming healthcare.

"Gender affirming healthcare" is such a nice euphemistic phrase for the absolute horror that is those surgeries. I genuinely think there is a complete lack of ethics by the medical establishment. It is surgical mutilation of people with mental illness.
Future generations will look back at the same horror we do at lobotomies.

Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity”. The interventions help transgender people align various aspects of their lives — emotional, interpersonal, and biological — with their gender..
The interventions fall along a continuum as well, from counseling to changes in social expression to medications (such as hormone therapy).

@Tandora If you genuinely believe that medical transitioning helps people who suffer from gender dysphoria then please read up about the side effects of the drugs, the realities of the surgery and listen to detransitioners - an increasing number are being brave enough to talk about what was done to them.

It's also worth listening to Dr Az Hakeem, particularly when he talks about his experience of running group therapy sessions.

Surgeries they demand are so essential for teens and young adults but very few adult middle-aged male transitioners undergo. I wonder why they are so keen to hang onto their penis? 🤔

Incidentally over 80 to 95% of children and teenagers find their dysphoria resolves if they are allowed to go through puberty. So why are adult transitioners so determined to stop their puberty?

Evening, everyone. We've had to delete several posts on this thread for breaking our Talk Guidelines and will be taking action against repeat offenders.

Please can we draw a line under this all now and allow the conversation to continue? We truly believe this is a discussion that it's possible to have without resorting to personal attacks and the like, but if we continue to have to delete posts we may have to take the thread as a whole down, which would be a shame. Thank you for your cooperation.

I'd love to know why you're silencing disabled people for standing up for themselves...

Did you understand what I wrote? That gender dysphoria is a mental health issue. Someone who is 'trans' will not be cured of their dysphoria by transitioning, just as someone with anorexia is not cured of anorexia by withholding food as they desire.
Trans people are asking to be cured by becoming what they think they are. But they are not that thing (a member of the opposite sex) and we would do better to counsel them and discover the origin of their dysphoria so that it can at least be made bearable. That may mean dressing as the opposite sex. It cannot mean entering the opposite sex's spaces, places, prizes, refuges, prisons, hospital wards etc. The solution is third spaces.

actually transitioning helps dysphoria immensely.

You might want to look up autogynaephilia - a fetish where men get aroused by thinking of themselves, and having others treat them, as the object of their desire.

320 trans people were murdered between 2022-2023

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamiewareham/2023/11/13/beaten-stabbed-and-shot-320-trans-people-murdered-in-2023/

There were 350 trans people murdered in 2024.

No, there are not more trans people who murder than are murdered. Majority were under 25. Violence again trans people has increased by four times in the last year.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamiewareham/2024/11/16/350-transgender-people-murdered-in-2024-will-the-violence-ever-end/

That's a ridiculous statement.

Edited

To put this in context - this is a worldwide figure. There are nearly 500,000 murders each year so approximately 0.07% of murders are of trans people who represent approximately 0,5% of the population. In other words, they are murder at a rate an order of magnitude smaller than that of non-trans people.
