Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

1000 replies

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

What is so hard to understand, disability ltoilets are for those who are disabled, not for people who are non binary

BlueMum16 · 22/12/2024 10:23

You employer should change the single toilets from male/female to just toilets by removing the signage . This will allow anyone to use each toilet.

This isn't on your colleague to resolve.

The problem is the vast majority of people don't want 'anyone to use each toilet'. Men want to use the men's, women want to use the women's. Has always been thus.
The fact a tiny minority see themselves as 'neither' of those things, you could say, isn't society's problem to resolve.

chaosmaker · 23/12/2024 00:09

They could always use every other. Male then female, rinse and repeat. No using a disabled toilet that they don't need to use.

What do you think I do? If I can't find another toilet very quickly then I go straight home with soiled clothing. It's embarrassing and humiliating. A normal cubicle doesn't have the room for my crutches, and I struggle to get up from the toilet without the grab bar that's in accessible toilets. Not having a hand basin in there can stop me from being able to clean myself properly too.

The level of selfishness shown by some people on this thread is astonishing, I can't believe that so many people have so little empathy.

I can believe it. That's Mumsnet. Hopefully one day these people will know what it's like to try and get to a toilet you can fit in, get in and out of a wheelchair, and reach the actual loo before shitting yourself.

Pthagonal · 22/12/2024 23:40

Tiredalwaystired · 22/12/2024 14:27

So what do you do if a disabled person is in the loo before you?

But this simply isn't how it works! Creating safe spaces for minority genders doesn't mean less safety for other people. Human rights are not cake, someone else getting a slice of rights doesn't make your piece smaller

What safe spaces are you referring to? What do you mean by minority genders? What human rights do majority genders (whatever that means) have that your minority genders don’t have?

Except the don’t want to create a safe space for minority genders, they want women’s and disabled spaces. Human rights are like pie - if nonbinary people use disabled people’s facilities they are not there for disabled people. If men who identify as trans enter a women’s changing room it becomes mixed space and women lose their single sex space.

No, human rights are not cake. But presently the effect of finding safe spaces for minority genders is heavily impinging on the majority sex group, which is discriminated against because of their sex.

Em4lyf · 22/12/2024 23:25

SameAsItEverWas24 · 22/12/2024 15:31

Not really. Because what about customers who want single sex facilities? Why should they give it up for one person? Who's needs trumps who's? Pandering to all this is NOT a solution. It why women all.over the country suddenly have to share previously single sex facilities with blokes who get a kick out of using the ladies. The "just remove the signs" solution solves nothing

The ban is a disgrace. it is a political move that ignored the findings of the consultation and the vast majority of expert opinion presented through it. It is also unethical, given the concerns that have been raised about the proposed trial. For as long as the ban lasts it will cause profound harm to many trans children.

Edited

Really go and educate yourself reading the peer reviewed literature, not stuff on pro trans sites.
Time to think by Hannah Barnes gives a balanced overview.
This is not about trans rights.

Yes sexually attracted by the idea of himself as the object of his desire. Remember they often refer to themselves as ‘girl’ and some have nappy fetishes too….

OMG. And we want such people in women's spaces?

Someone who is 'trans' will not be cured of their dysphoria by transitioning,

actually transitioning helps dysphoria immensely.

we would do better to counsel them and discover the origin of their dysphoria so that it can at least be made bearable

We’ve tried this. It rarely helps very much at all. What helps is gender affirming healthcare.

Not true. Peer reviewed studies show that between 65 and 95% of trans young people are cured of their gender dysphoria by undergoing normal puberty.

However over 95% of young people who go on.puberty blockers go on to take cross sex hormones .

So by giving them PBs you are not pausing at all - you are denying them a chance to be cured of gender dysphoria.

And let's not forget the irreversible effects of puberty blockers. Decreased bone density leading to pathological fractures. Permanently stunted growth leading to shorter height as an adult. We also don't know the effect on the brain.

Reversible effects include severe mood swings and menopause symptoms in females.

Moreover the majority of trans young people are female, are either neuro diverse, have suffered abuse or trauma as children, are lesbian or gay and come from families where this is not supported, and have no history of gender dysphoria dating back to pre-pubescent childhood. There is, in most cases, a major issue affecting mental health that does benefit from counselling. Even if the person then does decide to transition, they should always get counselling first.

One final thing. People who go on puberty blockers too soon will be infertile if they don't stop them before going onto cross sex hormones (i.e. the vast majority) and for female to male transitioners, they won't have enough tissue to be able to have surgical transition.

Arguing in favour of PBs has to be ideological because all the overwhelming evidence is that they are a very bad thing in the context of trans young people.

SameAsItEverWas24 · 22/12/2024 15:19

In the hierarchy of identities, "gender" always always trumps disability. That's the BeKind era we live in. Basically "fuck them, my needs are more important". ESPECIALLY when those needs are totally made up. A wheelchair user has to wait sorry while a non-binary employee validates themselves on the loo. You can't make it up

I completely agree with you if they are being affected by someone using the disabled toilet. But they question is, is this affecting their disabled colleagues? To me it just sounds like OP intentionally wants to make their non binary colleagues experience more difficult, when other folks in the office aren't being further marginalised by one other person occasionally using the toilet. It seems rhetorical to me and not about ablism, but rather about gender determinism. Obviously no one would want to promote ablism but it doesn't seem to be the case here from what OP has said.

We’ve tried this. It rarely helps very much at all. What helps is gender affirming healthcare.

Gender affirming health care consists of castration in men, and the addition to their body of an open wound. In women it sterilizes (this is the effect of testosterone) and often involves the removal of healthy breast tissue, thus preventing a woman so mutilated from breastfeeding if she should ever be able to bear a child. Genital urinary dysfunction also result from this care. Sexual function and ability to enjoy sex is also removed.
I don't thinks that lot is very affirming of anything.
Watch and wait. Counselling, These are more likely to work and they do no harm.

Many thanks for the reminder. I am aware of AGP. Essentially, as I understand it, this is that a man is sexually attracted by the idea of himself as a woman. Transitioning is essentially enacting this fetish in public.

This.

When my sister was 8/9, she told everyone she was a boy. Made everyone call her by a male name. It lasted 2 years. Absolutely swore blind she was male.
Back then, there was none of this trans stuff. My parents didn't even think to take her to a GP about it (was in the 90s).
It was a phase, and she is now married to a man, and has kids. Looks back on that episode with embarrassment.
Nowadays, she would be on meds and transitioning.

Worse, she could have had "top surgery" like Keira Bell and then got married and had her babies to find her breast milk was all trapped in her chest and she was unable to even feel her baby when she held her.

You might want to look up autogynaephilia - a fetish where men get aroused by thinking of themselves, and having others treat them, as the object of their desire.

You win some, you lose some. Didn't the SNP completely ignore a consultation in reforming the GRA?
Besides, you forgot to mention Cass. The ultimate guide to Puberty Blockers. That's one truth that can never be put back in Tandora's Box. ( See what I did there?)

A disgrace? It’s a basic safeguard.
Children shouldn’t be exposed to being in the position to make such monumental decisions whilst their frontal lobe is still developing. For the same reason we assume they’re not ready to drive, go to war, get married, take out a loan etc.
I really can’t understand what agenda somebody must have to describe the ban as a ‘disgrace’.

Concerns by… Trans Activists.

Anyone who thinks confused, more-often-than-not autistic children should be prescribed puberty blockers and are pro surgery mutilation should be in jail.

You’ve had your ‘claims’ batted back to you so many times Tandora by posters who have done all the research but still you persist. All you’ve got is ‘you haven’t spoken to any trans people’.

You’ve had mothers of confused gender non-conforming children who’ve done ALL the research and who know first hand the harm this ideology has the potential to bring
and has brought. Stop with your dangerous bullshit.

SameAsItEverWas24 · 22/12/2024 23:03

Tandora · 22/12/2024 22:40

Nobody who knows anything about this area of medicine should expect PBs to improve mental wellbeing in a way that can be measured through this sort of trial . It’s a nonsense . The only purpose of PBs is to place a temporary pause on changes associated with puberty to give children a little more time.
Also Olson is right in what she says here because children who are properly supported do generally do well and if they start PBs at tanner stage 2 do not have to suffer the terrible dysphoria that can be caused by consent of endogenous puberty.

Edited

This is a very 2020 argument dear. PBs have been banned because they are a complete wild west. No evidence of efficacy, evidence showing the reverse in fact and absolutely do not pause anything. What concerns me is why people are so desperate to put kids on to this stuff without proper trials and safeguards.

Even NHS Scotland has gone along with the ban. That says something.
It isn't harming children, it's saving them from a life of medicalisation and unnecessary surgeries. I hope it's made permanent.

Fortunately puberty blockers have now been banned for under 18s in the UK for use in gender dysphoria cases. Because as it turns out, they're not a harmless "pause".
